Avoid Being Workaholic

workaholic, burn, out, office, computer, bone, skeleton

What’s up ? This is THE stephane ANDRE !!! I watched an Olivier Roland’s video and I learned some good stuff.

There is a trick to avoid being a workaholic that the majority of entrepreneurs don’t do. It’s to have a productive activity outside of work (because the company is based on a passion). If you’re not sure what a productive activity is, you can read this article I wrote. Click here ].

A lot of entrepreneurs are workaholics, which means that they’re work addicts. It’s not really a bad behavior, especially in the early years of the company because there are many new things to learn and few employees. But in the long term, it can block you to achieve the success you should have.

Workaholic

workaholic, burn, out, office, computer, phone, coffee

When I say « work addict », I don’t mean that a person is an addict like with cocaine, heroine, crystale methamphetamine, etc. We, human beings, are afraid of emptiness. This is very well explained in the Tim Ferriss book « 4-hour Workweek » . For example, you become more and more efficient using the 20/80 method (Pareto’s law) and you manage to earn 2 hours of free time per week. Now, what are you going to do with these 2 hours of free time ? Are you going to sit and count the insects ? No ! And as today more and more entrepreneurs have a laptop, they’ll continue to work on the laptop.

The problem of working during free time are :

  • Too much nose to the grindstone and do things that aren’t really useful. It prevents you from having peace of mind, serenity, being creative, decompressing, taking a step back, etc.
  • Work to work. For many people, consciously or unconsciously, if they don’t work, they’ll be bored. So they’ll do things that aren’t really useful to be busy. We can call it « intelligent procrastination ». With « intelligent procrastination » people around you see that you’re working but it’s not things that really make your company evolve. For example, spending 2 days choosing the font and colors of your website is « intelligent procrastination ».
  • In the long term doing things that are not really useful for the company’s evolution, will have negative effects. You’ll lose you serenity and have more stress. The symptoms of this state of mind are that you have the impression that everyone is stupid. At that moment, you have to take a holiday right away, otherwise you’ll have a burn-out.

I know it’s a little paradoxical because the first years of the company, you have to work as much as you can because there are lots of things to do and there is no budget to pay employees, but it’s important to have a productive activity to keep the balance in your life.

Usually when you start looking for an idea to start a company, you make a list of the things you like to do the most. This productive activity can be one of those things from the list that wasn’t used to create your company. This can be an activity such as flying a plane, kickboxing, meditation or something else that allows you to relax and forget about work.

Don’t hesitate to write this productive activity in the comment section and if you don’t know, make a list of things you like to do to get ideas.

Have Productive Hobbies

hobby, video, game, cook, music, soccer, fish, keyboard, medecine, astronomy, martial, art, paint, shopping, hike, bike, swim, sun, bath,

What’s up ? This is THE stephane ANDRE !!! I watched an Olivier Roland’s video and I learned some good stuff.

There are people who are named « High Achiever ». They’re people who have extraordinary results in their field. What’s interesting is that they all have a common pattern, they have a lot of productive hobbies. That’s not to say that they don’t have hobbies like watching videos, playing video games or partying, but it’s in small quantities.

Take the exemple of Richard Branson, the billionaire founder of Virgin. During an interview, he said that the hobby that had changed his life was sport. For him, the sport is fundamenal to improve the lifestyle but it’s not the case for all successful entrepreneurs. Steve Jobs wasn’t an athlete and he was successful.

Hobby

hobby, list, productive, unproductive

The question is : « What hobby is unproductive that you can replace with a productive hobby and relax ? ». A productive hobby is a hobby that allows you to reach your goals, improve your lifestyle and relax at the same time.

Decreasing your unproductive hobby by productive hobby is a task to be done slowly and gradually as for sport. This is the cumulative effect. If instead of eating a piece of pizza, you eat a salad every day, after few months, you’ll have a huge difference in your weight, your energy and your well-being.

When I started to replace unproductive hobby with productive hobby, I put pressure on myself not to play video games, watch videos on internet or party with my friends. After a few months, I wanted to stop everything, I saturated with personal development information and I felt like I had no more fun living. So to decrompress, I party for 1 week.

This is where I realized that you always have to have a balance. « High Achiever » also have unproductive hobby, the difference is that they don’t spend 4-6 hours to watch videos.

Have fun and be productive

nature, forest, africa
musical, instrument, music

An unproductive hobby is something that relaxes you but doesn’t bring you anything compared to your goals. In addition to the satisfaction that this unproductive hobby brings you, you feel guilty. It makes you nervous or even more stressed. Because of this frustration, you continue to do unproductive hobbies and you fall into an infernal spiral.

On the other hand, a productive hobby like sport, meditation, to read books interesting, to be in contact with the nature are hobbies which relax you, improve your lifestyle and allow you to reach your objectives. Scientific studies show that the 2 most creative activities are walking in nature and playing a musical instrument.

Make a list of unproductive hobbies that you do and replace them with productive hobbies. The idea is to reduce your unproductive hobby and increase your productive activities to help you achieve your goals.

Don’t hesitate to leave a comment and why not your hobbies list.

Understand This Human Behavior To Boost Sales

human behavior

What’s up ? This is THE stephane ANDRE !!! I watched an Olivier Roland’s video  and I learned some good stuff.

There is human bias that needs to get around to get your company up to the next level. What’s interesting with marketing is that it exposes human behavior. Marketing allows us to understand good and bad human behavior

Lazy

This one of the most common human misbehavior. Take the example of a registration page for online training. There are 200 prospects interested in this training who gave you their emails to know the start date.

You divide the prospects into 2 groups, group A and B. For group A (100 prospects), you ask them to write their first names and emails and click on the OK button in the form to register. For group B (100 prospects), their first names and emails are already pre-filled in the form, just check the information and click on the OK button. In group B, there will be about 10% more registration compared to group A.

Which means that in group A, there are about 10% of prospects who don’t have enough energy or motivaton to write their first names and emails in the form.

Honest

honesty

This is one of the most common good human behaviors. Take the example of a guarantee of 30 days without conditions satisfied or refunded. Technically, there are plenty of people who could benefit from this guarantee by saying : « I’ll use this product for 29 days and I’ll ask for a refund ». Of course, there are people who do that, but it’s always surprising to see that it’s a small minority. It’s something nice to see.

Psychology

Unfortunately, there are limits in honesty and it’s necessary to understand some human bias to have a good company. Otherwise your company is in jeopardy.

In a detective tv show, there is a perone who is looking for the best detective for his problem. The hero of this tv show is a detective.

The person sees the hero and says : « I did some research and you’re the best in your field ».

The tell him : « You did some research, but what exactly did you do ? ».

The person answers : « It’s simple, I went to see all your competitors, I asked them who was the best detective and they all said it was them. Then I asked them who was the best second detective after them and they said it was you, that’s why I realized you were the best ».

Did you see the human bias in this example ? When you ask a pro who is the best, he’ll answer you : « Me ! ». The pro does this because he wants to sell, he has his personal pride and maybe he really believes he’s the number 1 compared to others.

Which shows that it’s difficult to have the most objective answer possible with this question. By understanding this human bias, you can use a question that gets around that. This question is : « Okay, it’s obvious you’re the best but who’s second best after you ? ». In the majority of cases, the answer is objective.

Price

price

Let’s take another example. An entrepreneur conducts a survey with his prospects to determine the selling price of a product. The question is : « What is the price you would pay to buy this product ? ». If you ask your prospects how they want to help them, they’ll be honest but when you talk about the selling price, it become complicated. When you ask the question about the selling price, they will always tell you a lower price compared to the price they could pay.

There are 2 reasons :

  1. When a person ansers this question, she thinks : « If I tell him I’m willing to pay 100 dollars, he’ll sell it to me at $100. So, I’ll tell him $50 like that it will be cheaper ». It’s a behavior that all human beings do (me and you included).

  2. There are people who don’t know how much they would be willing to pay because they can’t see the product. When they see the product and see what it can improve in their life, they’ll decide whether to buy it or not.

To solve the problem of the 1st reason, ask the question this way : « As you’re one of the people who helped me to create this product, you’ll have a special price, but what do you think the price is that the rest of the world should pay ? ». With this question, the prospect knows that he is going to have a special price so he can give a more objective answer.

To solve the problem of the 2nd reason, there is only one way. It’s showing the product to prospects.

When you do a survey to prospects for the sale price, it’s very important that prospects understand that they’re going to have a special price. Ask the questions : « What price would you pay to buy this product ? » and «  As you’re one of the people who helped me to create this product, you’ll have a special price. But what do you think the price is that the rest of the world should pay ». You will be surprised by the different answers you will have. Test it !

Obviously, it’s not only with this question that you will determine your selling price, it will be just a clue. It’s very useful to understand human psychology otherwise you risk choosing a selling price really too low that should be and earn really less money.

Trick To Be More Productive

work

What’s up ? This is THE stephane ANDRE !!! I watched an Olivier Roland’s video  and I learned some good stuff.

Have you ever finished a day completely exhausted and after analysis, have the impression of having accomplished nothing ?

Don’t worry, it has happened to me and it happens to everyone a few times. The truth is that it’s important to understand that there is a difference between being productive and being busy. It’s really something that you have to remember often.

To be busy

Here is an example, imagine that you spend all day pushing a building with hands. It’s serious, you really want to move the building. It’s obvious that at the end of the day, you’ll be very tired but the building will not move.

You’ll have to spend a lot of energy, give a lot of effort but the results are negative, the building did not move a millimeter. In fact the efforts you make aren’t systematically correlated to the results you will get.

With the building’s example, it’s easy to understand that this task destined for failure but with the activities of every day, it’s more complicated to identify.

Let’s use another example. Imagine that you spend all day pushing a block of stone on the sand. At the end of the day, the block of stone will have been moved a little bit (and this is a better result than with the building). But is there a way to move this block of stone faster ? Yes, with a crane, it’s more efficient and it takes less effort. It’s true that finding a crane requires a lot of energy and time, but the crane allows you to have better results more impressive. With the crane, you can move the block of stone in 30 minutes to the destination.

To be productive

be productive

Often the methods to be productive requires a lot of effort and you have the impression to build nothing, but when the methods are put in place, it will give you continuous results without asking you a lot of effort.

Today, after my training, I spoke with a gym employee about blogs. He wondered why I had a blog because for him blog are dead. It’s true that blogs are less fashionable than videos and it’s true that a blog takes years to have an interesting traffic to build a company.

But what he doesn’t see and what the majority of people don’t see is that if the content of the blog has no expiration date, 5-20 years later, your blog’s content will have always value and will be usable. If yo create content based on news, 2 months after your content is no longer valuable and no longer usable.

And it must be added that the blog’s mailing list is more efficient than social media’s subscribers when it comes to promoting your product/service. It also makes me think that since 2005, every year, people say email is dead, ahhaha haahahah.

Vision

It’s not easy to realize that we’re busy instead of being productive and it depends on our perception. By having a clear vision of what you want, you create a company that is at the service of your life rather than your life at the service of your company. Creating content with no expiration date to educate people is my vision. On internet, one of the keys to success is to be able to create the maximum content without expiration date to not be dependent on fashion phenomens.

With this vision, it helps you identify when you’re busy and when you’re productive. This skill allows you to search for what is most effective to reach your vision. At first, there are things that you consider effective and they’re not and vice versa. The process to reach your vision is to explore new things to move forward and grow.

Have you already identified things in your work that you think are effective and in fact they aren’t (like pushing a building with your hands) ?

Manage Your Internet Presence

internet

What’s up ? This is THE stephane ANDRE !!! I watched an Olivier Roland’s video  and I learned some good stuff.

As you have notices, there are many Youtuber who are successful. With this phenomenon, more and more people want to create their Youtube channel. I created my Youtube channel in 2015 and I wanted to make vlogs but I still don’t want to learn video editing (a 4-minutes video would take around 4 hours to edit). So for the moment, I prefer to make videos on Instagram and Snapchat with my smartphone, it’s faster.

Be careful

With this phenomenon of Youtuber, I see that there are more and more people who think that it’s useless to have a website or a blog. For these people to manage their presence on the internet, social media (Facebook, Youtube, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.) are sufficient. I have also seen companies using social media to promote their services/products and they still don’t’ have a website ?!?

It’s a big mistake to create a lot of content on a platform that doesn’t belong to you. What I mean is that it’s a good idea to create content on several different platforms, but you need to own your own website or blog.

Risks

risk

There are several risks that can ruin your presence on these social media. You can be excluded from these platforms and the consequence is that you can lose all your contacts in 1 day. If you go to an infopreneur’s event (people selling information products) and you ask to 100 people : «  Who has already had his/her Facebook Page, Facebook advertising account or YouTube channel closed ? », you’ll have 5-10% of the people who will answer « yes ». This is not a huge percentage but it shows that it happens regularly.

Algorithm change can drastically change the number of people you can reach on the platform. Facebook is extremely sensitive about it. 1-2 months ago, Facebook has made a major change in algorithm so that content posted on Facebook Page reach fewer people than before. And Facebook has increased the cost of advertisement because there are more competitions to appear in the stream of Facebook users.

On YouTube, the algorithm change is less radical but there are changes. Youtubers complain regularly about changes and the fact that subscribers can’t watch new videos because the algorithm decided that the subscriber wasn’t interested enough. There are also changes in monetization rules that are usually bad news.

Being owner

When you own your website or your blog, you’re at home. You can’t be excluded from your own website. It’s true that this is sensitive to search engine algorithm changes like Google, Bing, Yahoo or DuckDuckGo but these changes are much more stable over time than social media.

Learning the basics of SEO is more important and effective in the long run than learning to be very visible on social media. For example, the tips you learned in 2015 to be visible on Facebook no longer work today. Now, Facebook has changed so much that you have become a beginner again.

Content type

Personally, the content type I create is to teach things to my audience because I’m an infopreneur. Anyone like me who aims to teach things to their audience and not make money with advertisements is totally the last priority of YouTube. YouTube is basically an entertainment platform.

Most people when they come back from a long day prefer to watch a video that makes them laugh rather than a video that teach them something on YouTube. What makes YouTube live is the Youtubers who make entertainment. There are Youtubers who make entertainment who earn interesting sums with videos (with products placement) and advertisement. It’s with this business model that YouTube is paid.

Independent

infopreneur information internet website

As far as I’m concerned, I don’t expect anything from social media. Let me explain. Yes, I build my presence on internet with Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube to create content for my audience because they’re on these platforms. But I don’t expect anything special because there may be changes that make a platform can become less interesting for me.

I’m serene because I have my own blog. My blog is at the center of my ecosystem and I promote my blog on several social media. My blog is my home. With my blog, I have a higher conversion rate than on social media. The conversion rate is the percentage of people who subscribe to my newsletter. With my blog, I have a conversion rate of 5% while on social media, it’s difficult to reach 2%. In the long run, it make a huge difference.

When you create content on a platform that doesn’t belong you, you can’t change your interface. For example, if you have an event in London or New York, you can’t put a banner on the right column of the interface so that people can buy a place. On Facebook, YouTube, etc, you can’t do it. And we must add that these platform changes interface without warning you. They do large scale tests to see the impact it can have on users, but if the interface decreases your audience’s numbers, that’s not their problem. You’re just a number.

To build your presence on internet, it’s necessary to have a website or a blog to have the maximum control over what you do and use social media to promote your website/blog. Think about it, what is the most popular social media 5-10 years ago ? It’s still the same today ? ICQ, MSN Messenger, Vine, Friendster, MySpace, they were cool 10 years ago, but today, defunction, obsolete.

Trick To Have Really More Energy

energy

What’s up ? This is THE stephane ANDRE !!! I watched an Olivier Roland’s video  and I learned some good stuff.

Often, during the day, we have a loss of energy. There is a trick I learned at my first karate class when I was 6 years old- At each class our Sensei (teacher) taught us how to breathe. There are 2 types of breaths :

Breathing with the upper body

This is the breathing that most people do. We can recognize a person who breathes from the top of the body because the shoulders rise with each inhalation . This type of breathing is not good because it reduces your performance, your well-being and your energy.

Diaphragmatic (abdominal ) breathing

diaphragmatic breathing

It’s diaphragm breathing. For simplicity, it’s abdominal breathing. This type of deep breathing calm down immediately, improves your well-being, increases your performances and your energy.

Here are some scientific studies on the beneficial effects of diaphragmatic breathing because the list is long. Scientific study Aa , Bb , Cc , Dd , Ee . It’s this type of breathing that is taught for fighting sports, singing, meditation, yoga, public speaking, etc.

Try during these next days to identify what type of breathing you do. You can put a reminder on your smartphone because it’s a test to be done over several days. The principle is that every time you realize that you’re breathing from top, made deep breaths to do the diaphragmatic (abdominal) breathing. You’ll quickly notice that you feel much better after that with a better state of mind.

The idea is that you’re more used to breathing with the diaphragm to have more energy in the day.

Improve Without Stress

stress

What’s up ? This is THE stephane ANDRE !!! I watched an Olivier Roland’s video  and I learned some good stuff.

I think that’s already happened to you. Do you put so much pressure on yourself to reach a goal that you fail ? And that’s very frustrating when we do personal development. When we put too much pressure on ourselves, we have negative effects. The goal of personal development is to become a better version of ourselves by being happier throughout our lives.

There is a very instructive story between Buddha and one of his disciple. This disciple asks to Buddha this question : « When I meditate, sometimes I put to much pressure on myself and it doesn’t work, I’m too stressed. And sometimes when I don’t put this pressure on myself, I’m not focus enough and I’m almost sleeping. What should I do ? ». Here is Buddha’s answer : « To practice meditation, you have to be like a zither rope. So that the rope make the right note, it must be neither too tight nor too relaxed, it must be exactly in the right range. It’s the same for meditation, you have to be neither too tense nor too relaxed to meditate in the most efficient way ».

Middle

balance

It’s funny because it’s the same principle with the guided meditation of Headspace . In several guided meditations, at a certain point, the person leading the meditation says : « From now on, you can let your mind do what it wants ». This allows you to relax yourself , to decompress to better concentrate later. But be careful, as Buddha said, if you don’t put pressure on yourself at all, you fall into the opposite extreme of laziness, lack of attention, and etc.

The answer is balance. It’s not easy to find the balance, but it’s very exciting to explore and experiment with it. Because it’s part of this trip that makes us better people.

It’s up to you experiment between : I’m too relaxed and I’m too stress. Seek the moment you progress to reach your goals and also where you enjoy life. Whenever you find the perfect tension, you’ll produce the perfect note.
