## Connect Tableau to An Excel File

I have just enrolled in a Data Science course on Udemy  and I learned good stuff.

Now that you downloaded the dataset in Excel file format, we’ll use Tableau to analyze this.

We’ll connect to the dataset using the « Excel » option.

Now that you downloaded the dataset which is in Excel format, we will use Tableau to analyze this.

We will connect the the dataset using the « Excel » option.

Select the dataset in Excel file you downloaded and click on the « Open » button.

And as you can see, there is only one tab.

There is only one tab because in the Excel file there is only one tab. If in the Excel file there were several tabs, they would all have been listed here.

It’s necessary to check that all data is « OK ». Scroll the lines and columns to see that. Everything is good, there are 10 000 lines as in the Excel file.

Excellent, we connected our Excel source file to Tableau.

Now, click on the « Sheet1 » tab to access the Worksheet.

We’ll have a little fun.

For example, let’s look at what we have with « Geography »

« Geography » is the dimension that gives us the country, so we’ll make a map to see where the clients from the bank come from.

Move « Geography » on this area.

Ah, it’s odd, nothing happens ?!? Why ? Look, when you look at « Geography », it’s not recognized by Tableau as a geographic dimension. Here,, you can see that Tableau recognized « Geography » as a dimension of type text with the label « ABC »

Don’t worry, we can fix it quickly. Click on the arrow of « Geography ».

Selects « Geography Roles » and « Country Region » so that the « Geography » dimension become geography’s type.

Now you remove « Geography » made a table with a click-and-drag.

Look, we have a globe next to « Geography ». This means that Tableau recognize that « Geography » is a geographic dimension.

Since « Geography » is a dimension of geography type, there are 2 new measures that have appeared : Latitude (generated) and Longitude (generated).

Put « Geography » in this space with a click and drag.

Look, this time there is a map.

You have the possibility of zooming with these buttons.

The map is fine but we’ll remove the blue dots and modify the map so that it’s easier to read.

We’ll color the countries and display the clients number that has in each country.

We know that in the dataset each line corresponds to a client. What we can do is use the « number Of Record », it means the total of number of observations. In this way, we can visualize the number of lines attended to each country and the number of lines attended to each country is the number of client per country.

Then, take the « number Of Record » and move it to « Colors ».

Boom ! Each country has a color.

Look at the color contrasts. France has a darker color which indicates that it is the country with the most clients. Germany and Spain have almost the same colors which indicates that they have almost the same clients number.

But we want to know the clients number per country without have the cursor on the country.

To do this we’ll add a label. Take « number Of Record » and moves it to « Label ».

We’ll increase the text’s size and put in bold. Click on « Label », click on « Font » and select « 12 » and bold.

It’s cool, we can see the clients number per country. You have the possibility to zoom on a region. Click on « Zoom area » and drag and drag to select the region on the map.

Now we can see that the majority of clients are in France, this represents almost half of the total clients number of the dataset. Germany and Spain have almost the same number of clients.

## Manage Repetition When There Is A Lot Of Content

I watched an Olivier Roland’s video  and I learned good stuff.

There is a secret to manage repetitions when there is a lot of content. The secret is that you don’t need to manage your repetitions when you have a mission to learn something from your audience. To make a transfer of knowledge to your audience.

Attention, if every day you repeat the same thing, you will make your audience run away. I think you know the limit yourself.

Here are 2 benefits of repeating your content, education and editorial.

# Education

One the great keys to education is repetition. Being regularly confronted with knowledge make it possible to memorize and use this knowledge in everyday life.

# Editorial

1. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel all the time. You can recycle content that you published 6 months, 1 year, 2 years ago, etc.

If you look at a magazine and compare that the magazine has published in previous years, you will see that there is a lot of content that repeats itself.

2. You can recycle this content in a different way. You can talk about this content with a different angle because your opinion has evolved (you have improved your knowledge on this subject).

3. You can recycle this content in a different format. There are 3 type of formats : text, audio and video.

You can be the best in your country, there will always be people who have never read the article you published 2 years ago.

# Transfer of knowledge

It’s necessary to repeat your content for people who discover what you’re doing and haven’t yet consumed your content. If you write your articles thinking that your audience is taking the time to read all of your previous articles, you’re making a mistake and you could lose a part of your audience.

Repetition is necessary in education because human beings forget things easily.

People in your audience who read one of your article a year ago, will forget 3/4 of the content. And it’s the same thing for you when you read someone else’s content. That’s why recycling this content with a different angle or format allows your audience to learn better and memorize better.

If your mission is to make a transfer of knowledge, repetition is a great way to motivate people to take action. It forces people in your audience to ask : « Did I use that knowledge ? Did I act ? ». I didn’t create my blog to do intellectual masturbation. I create and recycle my content to motivate people to take action.

It’s possible that I wrote an article and that a part of my audience didn’t understand it. Recycling this article with a different angle or format may allow this part of my audience to better understand this article. The more I write and the better I can explain, it’s cool.

## Be Curious And Effective

I watch an Olivier Roland’s video  and learned good stuff.

I personally like to learn new things in different fields. Generally these are fields that I don’t know at all. This stimulates my curiosity especially when it’s something I don’t know and I see a lot of people using that. I think it’s the same for you.

That’s right, I’m curious and I like learning but how to be curious and learn a new thing effectively to use it as quickly as possible everyday ?

# How long to learn

This is something that I’m always adjusting but there are some fundamental principles for it to work.

Here is an excellent example : speaking a foreign language. I hope (and if not, I advise you to learn another language) that you’re a person who speaks a foreign language at a level that allows you to have simple conversations.

Now do a little analysis. How long did it take you to reach this level to have simple conversations (a level that allows you to understand 80 % of a conversation or a text) ?

As everyone is unique in his/her method of learning, imagine that with effective learning techniques, it took you 2-3 years to reach the 80 % level of understanding in foreign langage. How much time do you think it is necessary to move from a level of understanding of 80 % to 99.9 %?

The truth is more impressive than you think. To go from the understanding’s level of 80 % to 99.9 % (the native’s level), it’ll take you 20 years !

You know, it’s not necessary to have a 99.9 % level of understanding to be bilingual. If you understand subtile jokes, you can consider yourself a bilingual. On the other hand, if everyone around you laughs and you wonder why, you aren’t yet a bilingual.

# What is effective

It’s destabilizing but it’s a reality, it’s faster to go from 0 % level to 80 % level than to go from 80 % level to 99.9 % level. This is the law of diminishing returns. This law works in all fields. This law is similar to the Pareto’s principle. The Pareto’s principle is the fact that 20 % of actions brings 80 % of results, 20 % of customers brings 80 % of the company’s turnover , etc.

This means that at one time, it’s more costly to learn the little things that remain to be learned in this field than to learn something new in another field.

Let us continue with the foreign langage’s example. It took you 2-3 years to get an understanding’s level of 80 %. In the next 2 choices, what’s the most interesting for you ?:

• To spend 20 years to reach the 99.9 % level for a foreign langage

• To spend 20 years to learn 6-10 new foreign languages at a level of 80 %

You see the number of opportunities you can create in your life by knowing how to speak several langages, it’s cool.

But there is a difficulty in knowing when the law of diminishing returns is put into action, This is a difficult question to answer because it depends on the individual and the field. It’s a personal expedition. We must also not confuse this with the « crossing of the desert » that everyone does when we start a new project.

The thing I do and I advise you is to track your progress to know when 20 % of your actions bring you 80 % of the results. With this tracking of your results, you can know everyday if you approach or if you move away from your goals. If you move away from your goals, it means that you have to adjust your strategy quickly.

When you have found a smart way to track you progress, it’s cool because you have an intellectual horizon, cultural horizon, tools, methods, strategies that are extremely varied and diverse that the majority of people. You have an effective toolkit that comes from an extremely varied horizon.

You can see in my blog’s articles that I speak of different field. I’m curious and I show what I learn by giving my sources because I find that being curious give me excitement to be alive. When you travel to a country where you don’t understand either language or writing, it’s exciting, right ? You can do the same thing on a daily basis by learning things in different fields.

# Assemble different concepts

Now, let’s move on to the next level in curiosity. When you know extremely different fields, have fun connecting the concepts to each other. There is a type of creativity that involves linking concepts in a new way. Have fun connecting concepts that weren’t thought to be linked together and create something new. Look at how music evolves. You take 4 music’s types that nobody listen to, you mix all it and you create a new music’s type.

Today, we have the facility to have access to knowledge with books on billions of subjects. There are books on money, cooking, foreign languages, etc.

Attention, you need to learn in an efficient way with the principle of 20/80 and action (execution) everyday, no matter how difficult. If you learn all these things only to give you a good conscience and to impress your friends in discussions, you waste you time. It’s intellectual masturbation, it’s an illusion. It’s like this expression of Julien Greaux : « To be rich on Instagram, it’s like being rich in the game Monopoly ! ».

I hope that I motivated you to explore and learn new things effectively. And most important, you learn these new things to use them every day to boost your lifestyle.

## Squat Correctly (Part 1)

I read a Nerd Fitness article  and I learned good stuff.

I’m sure that in your gym, everyone says it’s good to do squat ? But who do your see really doing ? There’s not a lot of people, it’s weird, no ?

I do the squat on leg’s day but the truth is that it’s actually a « full body » exercice. « Full body » means that it’s an exercice that work several different muscle group at the the same time.

The squat mimics a lot of natural movement that you use everyday and if your goal is to gain muscle and lose weight, the squat is perfect.

What I see in my gym is that people who have never done squat are very intimidated and they use Smith machine to be reassured. But the Smith machine is very bad to do squat because it prevents you from making a natural move.

With this article, you’ll know everything about the squat and you’ll be able to do it without problem.

# Why

The squat is one of the most fundamental functional movements of our lives.

Look at babies, they bodyweight squat quietly. it’s by growing that we stop doing squat and be on a chair for hours.

When you travel, you see in countries, people do full squat to sit and chat, it’s fun. There are even restroom where you have to do a squat.

It’s modern furniture and technology that make us want to do less squat but fortunately we can get back to basics and squat all life.

Squat is a movement that uses multiple joints, hip and knee joint. This is what we call a compound movement.

Squat is a movement that uses legs muscles, hips muscles, core muscles, back muscle, shoulder muscle and arms muscle. That’s why I told you it was a full body exercice.

The fact that squat uses several muscle groups in your body, your body must increase your anabolic hormone production  to exercise the movement. This is cool because it helps to lose fat and gain muscle.

Strengthening strength in your knees and in your hips decreases your chances of having injuries in everyday life.

You saw, it’s really good for your body to do squat. Now, look at the different type of squat.

# Bodyweight squat

It’s the simplest squat version, it’s the squat we used to do when we were babies.

Stand with your feet slightly wider than your hips. Your toes should point lightly to the outside, about 5 to 20 degrees outside.

Look before you and fix a spot on the wall in front of you. You’re going to look at this point while you’re squatting. You don’t have to look at ceiling or look at the floor. For me, it also helps me to stay focused.

Put your arms straight forward so that they’re parallel to the ground. Keep your spine straight. Your spine shouldn’t be rounded or too arched.

Be concentrated to properly distribute the weight on your feet. The weight must be on your heels and the ball of your feet. You must feel like you glued to the floor. With this technique you’re able to move your toes throughout the squat.

During the squat keeps your whole body contracted. Here we go.

Inhale, swing your hips back and push your butt back. You swing your hips back to bend your knees. It’s important to swing your hips back to begin the movement. If you start by bending your knees to begins the movement, the day you’re going to lift a heavy weight, you’ll quickly feel the pain and difficulty.

Continue to look in front of you by fixing the spot on the wall in front of you. Keep your back straight to have your spine in a neutral position and your chest and your shoulder up.

Get down

As you go down, stay focused so that your knees are aligned with your feet. I remember that when I started squatting, I had to concentrate on not having my knees inside my toes. When this happened, I would push my knees out to be aligned with my feet. Of course, your knees must not exceed the width of your feet.

Imagine you have a Start Wars light saber on your knees. The light saber should be between your second and fourth toes, it’s a little trick to help you have your knees aligned with your feet.

Squat down until your hips joints are lower than your knees, this is the parallel position. It’s necessary to look at the hips position and not the thighs position because the thighs size can be different from one person to another. If your hips joint aren’t lower than your knees, you do a partial squat.

Once you’re down, it’s time to get back on your feet.

Get up

Continue to have your whole body contracted and push on your heels and keep your feet on the ground as well.

Stay focus so that your knees are aligned at your feet like when you get down and contract your butt up to be sure to use your glutes.

The most important thing is that you have to keep your body and your core contracted all along the squat. It’s important to learn to do this right away because the more you lift heavy, the more it will help you to have a good body’s position during the squat.

Note :Every human being has a unique body so none of our squats will look perfect. A person who has a short femur  will have a slightly different squat than a person who has a long femur. And it should be added that many people are working to improve their mobility problems. What I mean is that if your squat looks different from the person next to you, it doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong.

## Stop Procrastinating On Your Project

I watched an Oliver Roland’s video  and I learned good stuff.

At the beginning when I started my blog, I had difficulties to be regular in writing articles. I wasn’t productive. But procrastination is often a big problem for entrepreneurs.

Here are some strategies that help me and will help you to evolve your project every day. These are strategies that you can use today, they’re simple

# Everyone must know your project

Talk about your project to all people you know, even people you meet from time to time. A maximum of people needs to understand your project. Talk to your family, friends, schoolmates, co-workers, employees of places where you go often, your cat/dog/red fish, etc.

Talk about your project in your social media like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, etc. In this way, people from different countries will know that you’re working on an important project for you.

What will happen is that when you meet these people, they’ll ask you how your project is progressing. At the beginning, you’ll probably find excuses to explain why your project doesn’t advance but you’ll quickly realize that it’s embarrassing to invent excuses.

It’s normal to have that feeling because no one wants to look stupid in front of people. Now that you don’t want to look stupid in front of people, it creates a new external motivation, a positive external pressure that will help you to evolve your project.

# Make A Challenge

You can find a friend who also wants to create a blog or a company and both you make a challenge. Make a prize for each challenge. For example, the first who publishes 4 articles in his/her own blog, the loser must pay a restaurant or a concert (showcase) to the winner. Regularly each one checks the evolution of the other and once the challenge is over, you make another challenge.

# A regrettable donation

You make a check or fill out a donation form for an association or a political party that you don’t like at all. You really have to hate the beneficiary of the donation. You give the check or the donation form to one of your best friend. If at the precise date you didn’t make your project evolve as planned, your friend sends the money to the beneficiary. It has to be minimal \$100.- because it has to be painful. You want to do everything to avoid this.

These strategies allow you to have something more in your state of mind to realize your project. A plus to boost your will effectively.
