Heat Illness

heat illness

What’s up ? This is THE stephane ANDRE. With my training, I’m interested in biomechanics to avoid injuries. I read « Sport Medicine Media Guide » and I learned some good stuff.

Every summer, hundreds of people experience sun-related illnesses and heat. Being prepared and hydrated avoids theses situations.

Why

When an athlete exercises, his/her body temperature increase and the body sweats to cool the body. During this process, body fluids and electrolytes are lost. If the boy is not recharged with fluids and electrolytes, it’s dehydration and it increase the risk of heat illness as a heat stroke.

Symptoms

Symptoms are :

  • Chills

  • Dark colored urine

  • Dry mouth

  • Headaches

  • Thirst

  • Weakness

If the heat illness progress, there are more serious symptoms like :

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Body temperature increasing to dangerous levels

  • Muscle cramps

  • Nausea

  • Tingling of the limbs

  • Death

How to prevent

The most effective treatments for heat illness are :

  • Proper training for the heat

  • Fluid replacement before, during, and after exertion

  • Appropriate clothing (light colored, loose fitting and limited to one layer)

  • Early recognition via direct monitoring of athlete by other players, coaches and medical staff

  • Monitoring the intensity of physical activity appropriate for fitness and how an athlete has acclimated to conditions.

  • If possible, having an athletic trainer on site during events and practices to properly prevent and treat heat illnesses.

In situations where the training program is intense or during a trip in a hot climate, an athlete should limit the intensity and duration of the training session. Thereafter, the athlete will increase the training’s intensity for a period of 7-14 days to allow to the body, the time to adjust to the climate and environmental conditions. For athletes with respiratory, gastrointestinal or other diseases, they should especially evaluate these new conditions.

When an athlete should hydrate

hydrate

It’s necessary to hydrate before, during and after a training session. Drinking 47cl (16 ounces) of water is recommended 1 hour before exercises. Hydration should continue with 11-23cl (4-8 ounces) of water every 15-20 minutes throughout the effort

There is a trick to track the hydration’s level is to weigh before and after a physical activity. If the athlete is lighter after a physical activity, this means that there a deficit of fluids (indicated by weight loss) and it’s necessary to recharge them. For the next physical activity, it will be essential to drink more to evaluate the losses (perspiration). An athlete who loses more than 2-3% of his/her bodyweight during exercise may decrease the performance and the body’s physiological function.

If the athlete is heavier after a physical activity, it means that there is a surplus of fluids (indicated by gain weight). For the next physical activity, it will be essential to drink less to evaluate the surplus.

How to treat it

When you see signs of heat illness or heat stroke, it may be an imminent danger of death. It’s necessary that a person immediately call for medical assistance while you’re cooling the person at risk.

Treatment included :

  • Getting the athlete to a shaded area

  • If it heat stroke, cool the athlete rapidly using cold water immersion. If immersion is not available you may use spray from a hose, cold water sponging, or placing cold towels over the entire body

  • Monitoring body temperature

  • Providing cool beverage if possible (i.e., if the athlete doesn’t have altered consciousness).

  • Getting medical assistance as soon as possible.

Heat exhaustion is a type of heat illness that can happen after several days of exposure to high temperature and improper or unbalanced fluid recharging.

Statistics

  • Heat stroke is a type of serious illness related to heat. It can cause death to athletes and this is probably the leading cause of athlete death during the months of July and August.

  • The body produces 1.8 liters (a half of gallon) of perspiration to cool the body every hour. If there are not enough fluids or the heat is overwhelming the body, the person may develop heat-related illness.

Create Frequently Content Boost Your Business

create content

I watched an Olivier Roland’s video  and I learned good stuff.

Here are the benefits of creating content frequently.

Share techniques

share

I like to share the techniques, tactics and methods that I tested and worked for me and for others. As an athlete, I like to see my potential’s extent, I like to win and I like to see people around me win. It’s always frustrating to see someone who has a talent and isn’t fighting to realize their dream.

Often when I discover something in a book or someone shows me a technique that I test and that works, I want to say to the world « Look this technique works, try it right now ». That’s why I created my blog.

Challenges

I watched a The Family‘s video  (I wrote an article about it Part 1 , Part 2 and Part 3). I decided to publish 5 articles per week for several reasons :

As an athlete, I like to push my limits. Posting 5 articles per week has forced me to find themes that fascinate me so I can enjoy learning new things and writing articles about it. Every day, I’m looking for new things. There are articles I write and don’t published because I realize that it doesn’t fit my vision.

At the beginning of my blog, you can see that I write articles to introduce some bodybuilders and I stopped doing that because I decided not to talk about athletes using steroids. With challenges, it allows me to refine the vision of my blog and my failures are part of the learning process.

Frequency

frequency publication

From, 2014 to 2015, I published 1-2 articles per week. Toward the end of 2015, I watched a video about a 30-day challenge. After watching this video, I decided to write 5 articles a week for 30 days and after published 1-2 articles a week. During the 30 day challenge, it was difficult for me to write articles (find subjects and find the time to write texts) but my blog’s traffic seriously increased. When I took the rhythm of 1-2 articles a week, I felt less stressed because I had less pressure but my blog’s traffic of my blog had decreased.

I started to get frustrated because one of the important things for a blog is to have traffic. So, I started again this challenge of 5 articles per week during 30 days by writing only on topics where I have fun. My blog’s traffic increased like the first time. Frankly, it’s cool because I know that with this frequency, I can reach more people. And that allows me to develop my business. Yes, it’s possible to bring value to the world by bringing value to yourself, thus making money. Both are compatible.

Today, I have prospects and clients coming from my blog. People read my articles, it’s free and then they send me emails or messages with social media to find out if I can solve one of their problem.

Learn

With this frequency of publication, 5 articles per week, it allows me to accelerate my learning curve. You can see the difference of writing between my first articles and my last articles. I improved my writing style. All that, it took me a long time and I know that I have a lot of things to improve. And I also learned that success is something that builds little by little. There is no success in 3 months or 1 year. Success is a thing in the long run. You learn to make the difference between lies and truths to have a healthy life in all areas.

For 1-2 years, you can see I’m learning to make videos on Instagram and Snapchat. I make 5 videos a week. Since about 6 months, I make an audio file (podcast) on my old exercise articles. In this audio file, I read the article so that you can have the information in a passive way. You can listen to my audio file while driving, working instead of listening to music. Making videos and podcasts are things I learn to do for my blog.

Have fun

have fun

Sharing content frequently no matter the format, text, audio, video, it’s something that I do with fun. People are asking me how do I keep doing this for years. The answer is that I have fun when I do that. It’s like when I train or dance Cuban salsa. When I do that, I have fun and if I can learn something to improve myself, I do it.

I know there are people who create content to make money quickly but it doesn’t happen that way. You need to do this for 3-5 years for free to build your reputation and then you can afford to make money. That’s why it’s important to have fun when you do that because the difficulties come, you see them from a different angle. There is no cheat code so have fun.

Average Not Acceptable

mediocrity

Being average isn’t acceptable, it’s simple. I encourage people to pay attention to their ecosystem because you chose the lifestyle you want. It’s true, it’s sound cliché or corny but it’s the truth. If you’re in a group of people who doesn’t motivate you, who doesn’t motivate each other to improve, you will fall in a mediocrity circle. If you stay long in avergage, after a while, you begin to decline.

This is what is called a plateau in training. If you lift 20kg (44lbs) in your training each time and you keep that weight a long time , your body will get used and it will begin to decline.

Being in average will take you to mediocrity ! It’s something you don’t want, you want to stay motivated, you want to be around people who motivate you and you want to motivate others. When you’re afraid to do something, you want your friends motivate you and you want to motivate your friends when it happens. That’s how you grow and you become better.

mediocrity

Sometimes a person gives you good advice to help you to advance or help you to avoid to make a mistake. If you don’t apply the advice, it’s your story, you keep it in your head. That’s why you have to keep an open mind to accept advices from others. You must train yourself to have this state of mind to be open and go to places where you can get good advice. All things can be a tool that help you to move forward either a positive or negative situation.

When you are facing a difficulty, don’t be overwhelmed by your emotions too long because there is always something that can help you to overcome this difficulty. Don’t be afraid, be brave and if in your entourage nobody has this mindset, it’s better to be lonely until you find one.

In your life, you will meet many types of people but you don’t want to be surrounded by people who put you down, who are sadistic, who slow you down. You want people who motivate you, it’s a steady progress.

mediocrity

For me, life is something in constantly progress. I don’t mean that’s the definition of life, I don’t know what is the definition of life but it’s a point of view that I have and I apply it every day . I’m personally in progress in all areas of my life and it makes me happy.

I know some people is living difficult times and that’s why I like to motivate people because they can overcome these difficulties. Me too, people motivated me when I had hard times and it’s my turn to motivate others.

If I can motivate you a little, that’s cool but around you with people who motivates you. Avoid people who put you down, you don’t need them. Let me say to this kind of people « Fuck you ».

Be A Winner

winner

Say you’re a winner isn’t arrogant, it’s a state of mind because the first step to success is in the mind. When it’s legitimate, when you have the talent, when people around you tell you that you’re good in something, why not trust in you ? People often confuse arrogance and self-confidence. Self-confidence is a good thing that allows you to have the lifestyle you want. Trust in you allows you to exceed you in the gym, to overcome you in your studies or your work. When you trust in yourself, you manage better the difficulties that a person who doesn’t have self-confidence, you have already noticed it, right ?

winner girl

This is the difference between athletes who make bodybuilding competitions being on stage and judged by people who don’t lift weights and athletes of powerlift or another sports that are judged by performances. In life, it’s a performance history because when you have a problem, you have to find a solution. You can talk with the person with you have the problem but you have to act to change the situation. Being a winner it’s not just in the gym or in a sport, it’s in life.

winner boy

I’m good in the gym and that’s why I give challenges to myself and I do it also with others people in the gym, it’s cool. We motivate together and we exceed our limits. You can do the same thing in your area, it allows you to get used to do difficult things, to get out of your comfort zone. I guarantee you that when you have a problem in your life, you will have more self-confidence to find the solution.

That’s be a winner, find the solution to every problem.
