While reading a NerdFitness article, I discovered that there was a study by King’s College London, who said : « the chance to returning to a normal weight after becoming obese is only 1 in 210 for men and 1 in 124 for women over a year ». If the person is seriously obese, chances are reduced.

What is this bullshit !?! Let’s look the study deeper .

The study

« Of 278,982 men and woment, the study found that only 1 % of people who were obese at the start of the study were successful in losing weight AND maintaining the weight loss ».

What is highlighted is : « count calories, eating less calories than normal and exercise dutifully » failed 99% of people after 10 years.

When I read that, I see two things :

  • Once we’re obese, it’s almost impossible to have sustainable results.

  • Current strategies of conventional medicine to fight against obesity fail to help the majority of obese patients lose weight.

FUCK THE MATRIX ! You don’t have to follow Matrix’s advice. There are other ways to have a better health in the long term.

There are a huge number of study that confirms and validates that eating fewer calories than you burn (calorie deficient) gives results for weight loss for most people.

This Matrix’s study has given advice to 278,982 patients based on a strategy to be successful in the short term. The Matrix has only given a part of advices, that’s why they failed.

As Morpheus says to Neo, « There is a difference between knowing the path and walking in the path ».

Here’s what the Matrix didn’t tell to the 278 982 patients :

  • Understand how habits work (and behavioral psychology).

  • A good state of mind

  • An environment created for success

  • Understanding how sugar can be addictive

  • Having a support (family, friends, boyfriend, girlfriend, etc.)

  • And more

Instead, modern medicine advises people to move more and eat less and don’t say the rest. It’s obvious that this is a strategy for failure : when your environment is against you at home, when the society do everything to make it difficult to eat healthy and when your social circle is against you, of course only 1% of people succeed.

It’s possible to succeed, just need to adjust some things to make it work for us instead of against us.

Having habits to have long terme success

Once you understand how your brain work to create new habits, you can change your bad habits to create good habits and develop them.

We start with small changes with we can live with and then changes become bigger. « I just need to try harder » doesn’t work, you need to understand HOW to try and then try smarter.

Diets don’t work

Temporary diets doesn’t work. Explain me, for 9 months you eat the « junk food » and for 3 months, you eat healthy food. With this strategy, your body is healthy all year ? No, and it makes sense.

Aim the long term. We’re making efforts to change our lives and a life isn’t short term. This is a fundamental adjustment in how we make decisions every day to achieve, day after day, our success.

Building a positive environment

We’re the product of our environment and we’re affected by all that surrounds us every day. This is why all heroes have theirs headquarters. The headquarters is an environment that is designed to relax and achieve goals.

Adjust your environment to avoid having « junk food » at home, avoid roads where there are fast food, sleep earlier, prepare healthy meal for all the week, etc.

The support

Going on war alone, it’s too hard. Why not create a team ? We need people to help us and inspire us to have a better health. Surround yourself with people who care about you and want you to succeed, don’t sabotage your efforts.

Knowing food

Eating 600 calories of cookies isn’t a solution in the long term compared to 600 calories of chicken, fish, avocado or vegetable.

The majority of processed food we eat today is created for a part of our brain is dependent on this food. The processed food transforms us into junkie who wants heroine. Junkie = Junk food.

This study creates two camps :

  • I know, that’s why I can’t lose weight. I’m condemned to stay obese, go to McDonald’s

  • Ok, it’s clear, it doesn’t work. I need to try something different. I have to be smarter than the Matrix.

Useless To Have A Better Body ?

I’ve wanted to look like people on magazine cover or in music videos (50 Cent), it’s already happened to you ? I think that it’s already happened for everybody. Having an athletic body seemed to be really cool. But as you can see in fitness’s world and bodybuilding, there are several types of athletic physique. Some may be achieved naturally and other with steroids.

Confidence or obsession

Why you want to have a better body ? This is to feel better in your body and have more self-confidence or you want to make money with your physque (personal trainer, fitness model, competition, etc.) ?

It’s interesting to ask you this question because there is an important point : « We always feel small ». When your goal is based on physical appearance, so like a pro, you always seem to not be quite muscular. I say this because I live it. I look at a picture and I look at me in the mirror and I think : « Damn, there is still a lot of work ! ». At this point, it can become an obsession.

Shit, I’m obsessed with my muscles !?! Well, what I meant was there is some tricks to avoid that this obsession becomes too big with stuff like :

  • If I have 6-packs, I’m happy

  • If I fit in these pants, I’m happy

Those little things show you that you have made some progress and it’s always good to remember.

Finding Balance

Having obsession to have a better body isn’t a bad thing as long you find the balance. The purpose of having a better body is to be healthy and happy, right ?

Health: You aim to have a healthy body with no physical problems. You change in a healthy and sustainable way.

Happy: You can do activities you want without your body prevents you from doing. You feel good about yourself. You’re naked or swimsuit, you trust in you because you determine your personal « look ».

Having a better body is something very motivating but when you get always compared with someone else, this can become a poison. Not to lose myself, I tell to myself :

Cable One Arm Tricep Extension

It’s getting hot and workouts are a little harder. With the heat we must breathe differently and drink a little more water, it’s summertime. What is funny with summertime is that there are fewer people in the gym like in winter. People drink their beer outside in the evening, it’s good but they don’t have to wince when a warrior walk in front of them ! Jealousy not good ! Ahhaaha!

Today was chest – triceps – calves. There is an exercise that I find cool for triceps, cable one arm tricep extension. With this exercise you balance the power of your left and right triceps.

Place yourself standing in front of the cable machine’s weight stack; Take the cable as the picture; Bench up slightly forward and take the cable so your arm makes an « L »; Pulls the cable down and back so that your arm makes an « L ». Attention your elbow stick to your body throughout the exercice.

You have to feel your triceps working well and not your shoulder, if that’s the case, you must reduce weights because it’s too heavy for the moment.

What I have noticed is when you use different cable machines, weights can vary. Perhaps this is due to the wear of the machine. The problem with machines is that when you have to repair, sensations are different. In these situations, I test several weights to feel the work effect on the triceps and that’s OK.

This the exercise I suggest you to balance your triceps, maybe you know another ? Which one is it ?

Be Quiet And Listen

I want to share something with you, it’s because I have a friend who paid the price of something he did 5 years ago. Like you, I have friends who are going through bad time in their lives. This kind of thing has happened to me often and I haven’t made the right choice. When we have big problems, we don’t want to involve our friends in because everyone problems.

What make me felt super alone, you know that people will listen but they will not help you solve the problem for you, you are the only one who can solve the problem and sincerely you don’t expect other to help you solve the problem. But at the end of the day we are still human beings, we have emotions, feelings and we are sad.

Sometimes in this kind of situation, you feel the pressure to do something or you say to yourself: « No one cares about me so it’s useless for me to take care of me ». When you think like that, STOP, stop what you are doing and breathe deeply. Do right things that can improve your life, I know it’s easier said than done. But believe me, I have also been in these situations. You wonder how you can fix the problem as quickly as possible.

This is the best way to screw up your life. There is nothing wrong with doing the right things to improve your life ! I don’t care to know how long it will take to have it, I don’t care to know how the road is hard to have it because at the end of the day, I have no remorse, no regrets and I’ll be a stronger person when the problem will be resolved. That’s how you become a stronger person with taking this kind of decision.

There are people who don’t know this kind of situations, that they never fought for something, who had never made a decision that completely changes the life, that have not done things that are really annoying or did something that put them in an unstable position. God bless them, there is nothing wrong with that, good for them.

There are people like me who have been through this type of situation and at a time on the path there are always two options. There is the « easy » way, risky, dangerous but you can do it, it’s possible and there are tons of things to win quickly. And the other, the « hard » way, the one where you must get up early in the morning, where you the obligation to do several things in the day. It’s boring, monotonous but it’s the real way to take because you grow up, you gaining more wisdom and you become a better person. Train yourself to stay positive and productive, especially do legal things.

Nobody know how the future will be, absolutely not and that’s really cool because everydays you create your future. It’s like a seed planted in fertile soil, you will have a beautiful plant. You plant a seed in a non-fertile soil, you have nothing, this plant wil be useless. It can help you a while but this is temporary and it can even take you away your freedom, your dignity, your self-esteem or your life.

I talked about this because I have lived it, I was in a situation where I had no one to call, I was full of friends, classmates, co-workers, people around me to go to party, buy alcohol but when a big problem happens, where are they ? Not on my side, you know what I mean. So you must invest in your life by planting seeds in fertile soil.

What I mean is that often you’ll have to make tough decisions and choose a path that is not glamorous, not parties several times in a week. But listen, it will make you someone solid, you will get what is truly yours. You’ll have a better esteem of yourself, you will not worry about anything because what you have, it’s deserved.

And that’s the beginning, it’s just creating your foundation, your genesis because you will grow and you will continue to have good things. Now in my life, I have many great opportunities but I have been failures, I’ll not lie to you, I’m not an angel. I was in dirty stories, but I learned. Sometimes someone has to tell you what you should not do and sometimes you have to learn from yourself in the hard way.

It was difficult for me and it gave me more motivation to not be in this situation in the future, a situation where you can lose your freedom (prison), losing life (getting killed). This is why I have created my bubble, my fortress to protect everything I like and love, it’s a security bubble.

That is why I am a person who talks all the time to be positive, I motivates people, yes, of course I’m talking about training but there is more. Talking about fitness, it’s just the tip of the iceberg.

You know yourself that after the rain, there is the sun and life is the same.

There is nothing wrong in do the right thing for your life, it’s a simple sentence, but it’s so true. Everything is bad when you do a bad thing.

Maybe there’s someone out who is doing something now, that person is confused and doesn’t know what to do. Do right things for your life, if you need help, ask for help to someone, there is always someone who can give you a good advice and a good advice can help you to make the good action that will bring you to the solution.

Fitness History – United States – The 1950s (Part 12)

The Cold War, Baby Boom era was marked by the development of an important factor influancing the modern fitness movement known as the « Minimum Muscular Fitness Tests in Children » Kraus-Hirschland. This study used Kraus-Weber tests to measure muscle strength and flexibility in the trunk and leg muscles. It has been reported that nearly 60 percent of US children had at least once failed the test. In comparison, only 9 percent of European children failed at least once the test. During the Cold War, these startling figures have prompted political leaders to take actions to promote health and fitness.

When the results of the Kraus-Hirschland studies were reported to President Eisenhower by Senators James Kelly and James Duff, he responded with a conference at the White House in June 1956. From these meetings there have been two important results 1) the formation of the Presidential Council on Fitness Youth 2) the appointment of the Citizens Advisory Committee on Fitness of American Youth. This was an important first step to attract the attention of the nation about his physical condition.

During the 1950s many organizations have taken initiatives in educating the general public about the effects of low levels of physical conditions. Several organizations that had been involved in the promotion of fitness in the mid 1950s including the American Health Association (AHA); the American Medical Association (AMA); the American Association for Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAPHERD); the Presidential Council on Youth Fitness.

These organizations explained the merit and legitimacy of the fitness movement. The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) was formed in 1954 and has proven to be one of the first organizations in the promotion of health and fitness in American society and in the world. Throughout its history, the American College of Sports Medicine has established its positon on various issues related to physical exercise on the basis of scientific research.

Fitness History – United State – The Roaring 1920s and the Great Depression (Part 11)

The increased interest in fitness dissipated throughout the decade. A similar pattern is always repeated in the history of humanity after a war is won. Is that the society to relax, enjoy life and make fewer exercises. The Roaring 1920s earned this name because of this reason, the society was the most frivolous than any other in history until now. The priorities were eating, drinking, partying and other forms of entertainment.

In October 1929, the stock market crash signaled the beginning of a decade of economic depression. The economy has failed to recover until the United States entered World War II in 1941. With many other aspects of life, levels of physical condition fell during the Great Depression. The benefits that physical education programs have done through legislation that followed the First World War were short-lived. The funds for these programs were limited and were eventually exhausted because of the weak economy.

Despite the setbacks suffered by the fitness during the Great Depression, Jack LaLanne, who came to be recognized as a pioneer of the modern fitness began his career as a media fitness instructor . Throughout his life, LaLanne preached the values of lifestyle fitness. In the 1950s, the « Jack LaLanne Show » began to be broadcast on television, 25 years before the shows of Richard Simmons and Jane Fonda. LaLanne developed fitness programs including aerobics, water aerobics and resistance exercises. He has also presented numerous pieces of exercise equipment including the first cable machine, the secure system for squat called « Smith Machine » and the first machine « Leg extension ». Although LaLanne is often named as the inventor of the movement « Jumping Jack » history suggests that the real inventor was John « Black Jack » Pershing, a tactical officer at West Point in World War II. Although LaLanne preceded the movements of the modern fitness by some three decades, its ideology and its exercise programs had a good approach as demonstrated modern research.

Throughout world history, military conflicts have had a major impact on the state of fitness. The Second World War and its consequences for the United States were not different. Essentially, the modern fitness movement has evolved under the influence of the Second World War and the Cold War.

The United States are entered World War II with the bombing of Perl Harbor on December 7, 1941. With this declaration of war, he came to the need to prepare soldiers. Cureton hasn’t only recognized the many benefits of regular exercise, he strived to extend the knowledge of the human body with the help of fitness. He wanted to answer questions such as « how many exercises to be healthy ? » and what types of exercise are most effective. But most important was that Cureton wanted to know how physical fitness could be better measured on an individual. Among his contributions, the most important were the fitness test development for cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength and flexibility. His research has resulted in several recommendations for improving cardiorespiratory fitness, including the identification of exercise intensity needed to improve fitness levels. His suggestions became the fundamental basis of future exercise programs.

Say you’re a winner isn’t arrogant, it’s a state of mind because the first step to success is in the mind. When it’s legitimate, when you have the talent, when people around you tell you that you’re good in something, why not trust in you ? People often confuse arrogance and self-confidence. Self-confidence is a good thing that allows you to have the lifestyle you want. Trust in you allows you to exceed you in the gym, to overcome you in your studies or your work. When you trust in yourself, you manage better the difficulties that a person who doesn’t have self-confidence, you have already noticed it, right ?

This is the difference between athletes who make bodybuilding competitions being on stage and judged by people who don’t lift weights and athletes of powerlift or another sports that are judged by performances. In life, it’s a performance history because when you have a problem, you have to find a solution. You can talk with the person with you have the problem but you have to act to change the situation. Being a winner it’s not just in the gym or in a sport, it’s in life.

I’m good in the gym and that’s why I give challenges to myself and I do it also with others people in the gym, it’s cool. We motivate together and we exceed our limits. You can do the same thing in your area, it allows you to get used to do difficult things, to get out of your comfort zone. I guarantee you that when you have a problem in your life, you will have more self-confidence to find the solution.
