I watched an Olivier Roland’s video  and I learned good stuff :

Have you ever heard that : « If you’re smart and you’re always surrounded by idiots, you’ll always be right ».

Sincerely, there is a deep truth in it. This corresponds to this quote « If you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room ». We are human beings and it’s easy to follow your ego. It’s easy to stay in an environment where we’re always right because subconsciously we want to be around people who adulate us or put us on a pedestal.

When we look around, we see people who are successful and who stay in a bubble where they’re surrounded themselves with people who will always agree with them. It’s in our human nature not to like the contradiction of what we are and the values we defend. All of this is logical, we have success, we developed values and a life approach that we tested in the field and we don’t know others ways.

It doesn’t mean that in any case it works and that doesn’t mean that there are not other ways to succeed.

A group of intelligent people

When was the last time you were in a room where you felt that you weren’t the smartest person in the room and that you learned new things ?

What is interesting when yo participate in a mastermind group is that you’re surrounded by brilliant people who don’t hesitate to say when there are obvious things in you and you don’t see them. It allows you to change your point of view and forces you to face your own limiting beliefs.

Often during a mastermind group, there is a « hot seat ». A « hot seat » is when you share a specific problem and a specific question to the group. What is surprising is that we always see the same pattern that repeats itself. There is a person who shares a problem and a question and we see a lot of obvious things about the limiting beliefs of this person, how much that person has locked himself/herself into a part of the problem. From the outside, we see that there are other ways to attack the problem and we also see obvious solutions.

What’s interesting is that it seems extremely obvious for a person who is in the group to help find the solution but when you share your problem and your question, the group offers you things that you have never seen by yourself.

We all need a moment to take out our trash. We all need to share with a group what doesn’t work and what problems we have. Whenever we do that, we realize that we all have blind spots. Things that seem obvious to everyone but seem hard to see. It’s like seeing the flaws of another person but we don’t see ourselves our flaws.

Here’s an example, I’m ticklish. I can try to tickle myself, I can’t laugh but if someone else tickles me, I laugh immediately.

I can’t be at the window and see me walking in the street at the same time. So if you’re an entrepreneur and you feel isolated, break this situation. Go to events, try to meet other entrepreneurs because it will help you a lot.

You can’t know how many mistakes you make each day without realizing it. Only someone else can show you, your mistakes if you allow him/her to do so in a caring way. It’s not a matter of showing mistakes by accusing but in a kindly way to help you move forward. If you can participate in a mastermind group to be in a collective spirit of brilliant people, do it. It’s a great place to no longer be the smartest person in the room and learn new things to improve yourself.

Back To The Source Of Equipment (Part 1)

I read a Nerd Fitness articles  and I learned good stuff.

When I began, I went is a small gym at Sous-Moulin . It was a gym in sport center for volleyball, basketball, soccer players. There were only machines (because people stole dumbbells) and when we were 10 people, the gym was full.

2 years later, I went in a real gym. I’ll not lie to you the first time I was alone and I was afraid to the free weight section because I was afraid of hurting myself. But I had so much desire to have the 50 Cent’s body that I watched several times exercice’s video on Youtube and I did it.

On internet, there is a lot of excellent video that explain how to do squat, deadlift, etc. I downloaded videos of my workout program on my smartphone to heard instructions in the gym to do it right. It’s funny, I still have these videos on my smartphone and on my Cloud.

Now I feel good in a gym, I share with you gym’s basic principles and equipment that you’ll see most often. You’ll not have a loser’s head like me the first time.

Gyms filled to the maximum of equipment but you don’t need to use all of them to do an effective strength training. I’ll talk to you about basic equipment.

First time

It’s easy to lose your mind the first time when you go in a gym. There is a lot of things and everyone seems to know what to do.

The most of gyms have :

  • Cardio zone (treadmills, ellipticals, stationary bikes, etc)

  • Free weight zone

  • Group fitness room

  • Locker rooms

There are gyms that have pool, sauna, jacuzzi but it depends.

The fist time you go in a gym, it’s normal to ask for a visit. It’s important to do it because even if you’re used to gyms, you don’t know where are equipements you want to use. It would be a shame if you miss something. I don’t really remember but it was 6 months that I was in a gym and I discovered by chance, hidden in a corner, a machine to work calves.

Free Weight

During the visit you’ll see a lot of equipements. Personally I find that the gym’s staff concentrates enormously on machines and cardio during visits. It’s a shame because it’s the least interesting part. Let’s go to the free weight zone.

Barbells can have a size from 1.2m to 2.4m (4’-8 feet) long and a diameter from 25mm – 51mm (0.98’’ – 2’’).

It’s the standard training barbell (Olympic men’s barbell). This bar is 2.2m (7.2 ft) long and weight 20kg (45lbs). The Olympic bar has bearings that make it spin nicely to help assist the Olympic lift, snatch and the clean and jerk.

There are also gyms that have « woman bar » is 2.1m (6.9 ft) long and weight 15kg (33lbs). There is also smaller bar to lift weight between 4.5kg – 13.6kg (10lbs – 30lbs).

Fixed weight bars

This is a small barbell with weights already fixed on it. They’re usually located next to dumbbells.

There are several dumbbell’s design but it’s just for the style. Weights are from 0.45kg to 90kg (1lbs – 200lbs).

Ez-Curl bars

This bar is special because it is short and it has « W » form. This bar is only use for curls. I use this bar to do curls because with a normal bar, I have wrist pain, it’s my morphology (read this article). So if you hurt when you do curls with a normal bar, use that one.

Trap bar

You can also name this bar « hex bar ». This bar has a hexagonal shape and allows you to be in the middle to lift weights with a neutral grip. This bar allows you to do deadlift and shrugs but it’s not an indispensable bar. Olympic bar is indispensable.

Safety squat bar, Cambered bars, Apollon’s axe, Strongman logs (and others)

Theses bars aren’t necessary but it doesn’t mean that it’s useless to use them from time to time. If the gym specialized for Powerlifting, you’ll find these bars.

It’s the fact of spending an infinite time on details to be sure that everything is perfect. It can be an advantage but often it’s a huge disavantage. Because we spend months, years to create something perfect in his/her room and when we launch it, we realize that everybody don’t care.

It’s a student of the BloggerPro training who is a marketing internet’s teacher in a prestigious business school. He has refistered for this training but he thought he doesn’t need to do everything in this training because he’s a marketing internet teacher. He just took things who interest him. Result, he spent 2 years to write a painting book to make masterpiece and when his book launched, nobody buy it.

Then, he did again the training using all anti-perfectionism techniques. Result, he made a first product he sold 25 000 euros in one week. It was a training about the color mixture in paint.

Yes, perfectionism can be also a procratination’s type, an intelligent procrastination. In contrary of stupid procrastination, it’s procrastinating while feeling well. When we procrastinate stupidly, we don’t do something that we promised to do saying we will do it tomorrow. And we will feel guilty.

Intelligent procrastination, we’re choking under a lot of work. We can believe that we make progress but we just avoid something that scares us.

There is a lot of authors, entrepreneurs, globe-trotter, people who have great ambitions fall into it because they’re afraid to confront reality. They’re afraid to fail or they’re afraid to have success. It’s unconscious, they want it to be perfect. They will remain within a theoretical framework. They will be the best in the his/her room. « Lean Startup » method  help to have success.

The method is to set up as soon as possible in the field a prototype, a minimum viable product. It’s a method anti-perfectionism. We will focus on the 20 % of features/actions that will bring the 80 % of the result, 80 % of what people want.

And we will bring these 20 % as soon as possible in the field to be confront with reality to see if it’s good or if it’s need to have adjustements.

If you’re writing a book, try to confront you with reality as soon as possible. Develops a community when you begin to write the book. This community will help you to promote your book but also you can show to your community your ideas and see how your community react. See if what you write interest really people. This is can be in video or article.

A blogger who have a blog called «  Personal revolution » have wrote a novel several years ago. This novel called « The woman without fear » that was in the top 100 of Kindle’s sales during several months. How he wrote this novel ? He did in form of episodes in his blog. There a lot of famous authors who wrote novels which were the basis of soap operas published in newspapers. You can do the same thing today with your blog. You can write a part of your first chapter so that you community can give you feedbacks. You community will give you ideas, suggestions. If’s a kind of co-creation to write the rest of the story. In addition, it puts you in a anti-procrastination process because you’re creating the audience that will be waiting for the next. It will boost you.

Say your goal to the world and ensure that people follow you to ask about your evolution. The interest is that you will involve peope who will then broadcast what you have done when it’s completed. This blog wrote the half of his novel in his blog and with the help of his community.

You see the process ? He wrote a novel adapted to his audience because of feedbacks of his community. He knew, the day of the lauch of the book, there is already a community of people who were motivate to buy the book because they wanted to know the rest of the story.

P90X, Insanity, Weight Watchers, Shakology And Nutrisystem (part 2)

I read a Nerd Fitness article  and there is good stuff.

There is more than 1 million fitness product and diet system. This is what I think of certain.

Shakeology

Replace one of your meal each day with a shake. Shakeology’s shake pretend have « 70 nutritious ingredients to help to detox and protect the body of free radical damage and help against food carving and help to have a healthy libido » ».

Advantages

Like Nutrisystem and Weight Watchers, Shakeology is simple. Replace a meal with a shake and lose weight. I didn’t try but people say it taste good and it has a good source of protein and a nice amount of protein per shake with a little sugar.

If you travel, it’s easy to have a little shakeology’s powder to drink it to replace a meal.

Disadvantages

I don’t suprise people lose weight with this plan if they follow it exactly. They replace a meal (around 500-1000 calories) with a Shakeology’s shaker which is only 120-160 calories. It’s a reduction of caloric intake of 380-780 calories. Remember, just 500 calories less per day can have as result to lose 0.45kg (1lbs) per week.

For me, a meal of 120 calories is not good because you will be not satiated and not satisfied.

What happens when you don’t have Shakeology’s powder ou you don’t have acces to a blender or you’re traveling. Can you continue to consume the same amount of calories and maintain the same nutritious plan ?

Shakeology is good for people who want lose 4.5kg (10lbs) without changing lifestyle. It’s only for short term.

Juice cleanses

Stop to eat and drink this juice during 3-10 days to detox your body and lose weight. There is a million of juice cleanses, the concept is to not eat and replace all meals by a juice of fruits or/and vegetables.

Advantages

Instead to eat food, you just going to drink liquid calories all day. Because you don’t eat a lot of carb and sodium ( because you don’t eat solid food), you can lose a huge amount of water. Losing water can cause weight loss but it’s temporary. It’s not like losing fat !

You will eat more fruits and vegetable than usual.

Disadvantages

I think during these 3 days where you will not eat foods, you will ve miserable. You will just drink some fruits/vegetabels juices instead meals. You will essentialy drink sweet water with fibers.

The most of weights you will lose during these 3 days will be water according to the amount of carbs, grains and sodium that you consume usually. This weight loss is false because it’s only water.

When you will eat solid foods, the weight will quickly return.

If you want to a detox, take some days to eat a lot of protein, spinard, broccoli and cauliflower. If you want make real change in your life, read the next.

Exercice and diet

Instead to buy some powder’s shake, receive foods at home or replace solid foods by liquid, there is a philosophy named « Exercice and diet ».

No need to buy some weird stuff but it requires make changes in your lifestyle. The goal is to move more than stay seated and eat more real foods than processed foods.

Advantages

Every sytem talked before are solutions to short term. « Exercice and diet » is done to change the lifestyle for all life.

Instead to dramatically change how you eat and move during 3 months, you must change small things which will have long term results.

  • Rather to do exercice with a DVD during 90 minutes everydays, start with a walk,

  • Rather to count points or receive foods at home, study to cook and eat real foods.

  • Rather than being dependent on something to have success, be independent to have success.

« Exercice and diet » is the best to have long term results, to have results for life. If you’re traveling you know the different type of foods, you know how to eat healthy outside home. If you don’t have access to a blender or you can’t receive foods at home, you know how to cook a basic meal. If you can’t use a DVD player, you can do a complete bodyweight training session in a room or in a park.

« Exercice and diet » doesn’t ask you to spend a lot of money or buy fancy stuff or buy pre-prepared foods. It doesn’t ask you to have several hyper strict weeks and once it’s over, back to old habits. People make me laugh when I see them before summer, during summer and after summer. Rather that you have a new version of you (like updates) : healthy and happy !

Disadvantages

The big « Exercice and diet » disadvantages is that requires commitment and changes. No shake, no foods receive at home, no DVD but instead you must take of your health.

There is also another challenge to have long term change in your diet. Eat cookies, cakes and muffins are bad for you. You need to change this to see results.

It’s simple to learn but difficult to apply for people who search short term results. Everybody know we need to do more exercices and stop to eat junk foods but we can’t force our brain to do this. It’s for this reason we need to educate ourselves about willpower.

Results aren’t instantaneous like a click. « Exercice and diet » results can often take several months of change before seeing solid results.
