Often people ask themselves this question to start a company on internet: “What is the difference between a website and a blog ?”.

The answer is that there is no difference because a blog is a website. To be more precise, a blog is a type of website because there are websites that aren’t blogs. A blog is a type of website in which the content is published by antichronological order (it means that the last published article is displayed first). It’s possible to have a static home page for blogs, this is an option.

In the case of e-commerce, a blog can be a complementary website to attract qualified prospects. I take the example of fitness. You have a company that sells fitness accessories (weightlifting belt, squat knee sleeves, etc). You create a website to sell your products with Prestashop , Shopify , Magento . By creating another blog type website, you share content that will interest your potential clients, fitness fans.

On the blog, you share articles like: “Protect you back with these 4 strength coach secrets” or “7 exercises to build your strength and power foundation” or “How much protein, fat and carbs should you eat to lose weight”. Topics that interest people who do fitness. You have to publish content to attract qualified prospects, it means, qualified prospects who are likely to buy your products.

It gives a huge advantage compared to your competitors who don’t do that.

Here is a concrete example. Bonnegueule is basically a blog about French men’s fashion. But the Bonnegueule’s founders did more than what infopreneurs usually do (sell online training and ebooks) They created their own clothing brand in collaboration with fashion designers. Since 2014, they have 3 physical stores in France.

What is innovative with Bonnegueule is that on the products sheet of clothes, there is the complete details of the materials used, tips to be elegant with the clothe, how to associate this clothe with others, tips for good maintenance of the clothe and the fashion designers pictures.

With all this people see Bonnegueule as advisers and not sellers, even if they sell products. And that makes a huge difference in the relation with clients.

It’s also smart to create multiple types of content (text, video, audio) on other platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, Facebook or Soundcloud to attract other qualified prospects to other locations.

A personal trainer who is in the gym where I’m training ask me how to give courses online. But when he asked me this question, I noticed that he didn’t believe it or maybe it wouldn’t work with him. In the personal trainer business, there is part that is an intellectual service. What I mean is that there is a part of this job, which is to give people advice so they can improve.

All the skills that give advice can be turned into a product (information product). There is a huge challenge for personal trainers and service providers who trade their time for money. How to make more money (because there is a lot of competition) while a person can’t be in several places at the same time physically ?

The trick is that instead of explaining the same thing to someone 1000 times, you write a book/ebook, you makes videos or your do an online training program. With these supports, it allows you to save time on repetitive tasks and automate a part of your income.

Some might think that this method doesn’t work with all types of service providers, but with the technologies evolution, it’s changing. We find online training program for salsa, golf, guitar, boxing, mma, auto mechanics, plumber, etc. do some research on Google or DuckDuckGo and see.

For example, you want to learn boxing. Traditionally, you have to go to a boxing club to learn and improve your technique with sparring. But you learn that there is an online boxing training program from Floyd Mayweather. In this training program, Floyd Mayweather shares his best tips and techniques to improves your boxing performance. Are you participating in this online training program or not? I think so, especially if you’re passionate about boxing.

If you have the budget to participate in Floyd Mayweather’s online boxing training program, you’ll be very motivated to do so. Even if Floyd isn’t near you to correct your technique, he has clearly good tips to share with your to improve your performance and your boxing technique.

This is why it’s important not to put barriers to explore new things, to put in place innovative projects because it’s doing things that we learn what works and what doesn’t work.

It’s very interesting to be part of a group of entrepreneurs (mastermind or other) to see what they do in your country but also internationally. Being part of a group of entrepreneurs makes it possible to share good methods/techniques.

There is an extraordinary rewarding to be part of an entreprenarial group because there are people from all over the world. It’s true that often half of the people come from English speaking countries (United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada ) but there are many people from different continents and that is a phenomenal force.

It’s a bit complicated when you start your company and you’re in an international business group, but it’s interesting to know what’s happening in your industry in another country. To start, you can be part of a entrepreneurs group who speak the same language as you but who live in others cities and other countries.

Once you master a foreign languange, you may be interested in seeing what is happenig in other countries.

Imagine that you have a turtle shop. You sell turtles, turtle accessories and you have a turtle blog. It’s interesting to see what happens in English speaking or Spanish speaking countries. Tu vas sur Google.com (United States verision) , Google.ca (Canada version), Google.co.uk (United Kingdom version ), Google.com.mx (Mexico version), Google.com.ar (Argentina version), Google.com.co (Colombia version). You write keywords related to your professional field and you look at websites,forums, social media. You look at what competitors are doing, but in others areas.

Despite the incredible progress of Google Translate or other translation tools, markets are very isolated. The majority of people are interested only in their own market and their own language. This is a shame because it means that good methods will be used in one country and these good methods will be completely hallucinating and innovative for another country. And because of that, there is a loss of knowledge because there is no exchange between countries, there is no transfer of knowledge.

We entrepreneurs, we are not artists. There is no point in saying : « I’ll be the first to invent the wheel ! ». Once the wheel has been invented, it’s done and you can’t do anything. On the other hand, you can bring the wheel in your country and improve the wheel to find other use with. There is no shame in seeing good ideas in other countries and bringing them to your country. It allows you to create opportunities.

It’s true that the first interesting market to see is United States. Often this country is 4-5 years ahead of other countries in several different areas. But beware, new countries that are very dynamic have interesting innovation like Bresil (Google.com.br)  or several countries in Africa like Nigeria (https://www.google.com.ng ), Angola (https://www.google.pt ), Algeria, South Africa (https://www.googl.co.za ) and Asia like China (a tool to translate Baidu in english => http://www.baiduinenglish.com ), Singapore (https://www.google.com.sg ), South Korea (https://www.google.co.kr ).

What I want to tell you is that there is a lot to learn from other countries in the world. You need do be curious and to meet entrepreneurs from other countries with an exchange of ideas or innovations to create opportunities.

Make A Totally Innovative Project

Often we have a totally innovative product or service and it’s so innovative that we don’t know if people will buy it. And it’s normal that an entrepreneur to think about it because to create a product/service, it takes a lot of energy, time and money.

The problem is to know which is the most profitable idea. It’s an important skill that an entrepreneur must have to know how to minimize risks. No one can be sure of the product’s success at 100 % but we can reduce the risks enormously.

To reduce the risks enormously, it’s necessary to test the product/service to the reality of the market. There are several ways to test your product/service on the market :

  • The Lean Startup’s method  allows you to create a prototype ( the Minimum Viable Product) quickly

  • You can make ads on Facebook

  • You can create a blog to see if you idea interest people to make it a community

  • You can go on a Crowdfunding’s platform, explain your idea and see if people are willing to invest in it. Your product/service is in « pre-order » mode.

  • You can do a webinar where you explain your idea to people and see if they’re ready to pay you in advance. Your product/service is in « pre-order » mode.

The principle of these methods is to sell the product/service before creating it. With it, you can minimize the risks. You can do it, it’s legal and ethic provided you’rae transparent with your community or your prospects. You have to tell them that the product is under development and that they will be able to use it as soon as it’s ready.

I think we all already bought a pre-order product and we were satisfied.

With these strategies to « sell before you create » your product/service, you avoid wasting months or years of work to have an unsaleable product/service because nobody is interested. And unfortunately, it happens extremely often. A lot of entrepreneurs lose their time creating something that nobody wants to buy.

Test all your ideas in this way until one of your product/service interests people. And you do this every time because there is always a difference between what the entrepreneur wants and what consumers want. And the way to find out if a product/service is successful is to test it on the market right away.
