Understand This Human Behavior To Boost Sales

There is human bias that needs to get around to get your company up to the next level. What’s interesting with marketing is that it exposes human behavior. Marketing allows us to understand good and bad human behavior

Lazy

This one of the most common human misbehavior. Take the example of a registration page for online training. There are 200 prospects interested in this training who gave you their emails to know the start date.

You divide the prospects into 2 groups, group A and B. For group A (100 prospects), you ask them to write their first names and emails and click on the OK button in the form to register. For group B (100 prospects), their first names and emails are already pre-filled in the form, just check the information and click on the OK button. In group B, there will be about 10% more registration compared to group A.

Which means that in group A, there are about 10% of prospects who don’t have enough energy or motivaton to write their first names and emails in the form.

Honest

This is one of the most common good human behaviors. Take the example of a guarantee of 30 days without conditions satisfied or refunded. Technically, there are plenty of people who could benefit from this guarantee by saying : « I’ll use this product for 29 days and I’ll ask for a refund ». Of course, there are people who do that, but it’s always surprising to see that it’s a small minority. It’s something nice to see.

Psychology

Unfortunately, there are limits in honesty and it’s necessary to understand some human bias to have a good company. Otherwise your company is in jeopardy.

In a detective tv show, there is a perone who is looking for the best detective for his problem. The hero of this tv show is a detective.

The person sees the hero and says : « I did some research and you’re the best in your field ».

The tell him : « You did some research, but what exactly did you do ? ».

The person answers : « It’s simple, I went to see all your competitors, I asked them who was the best detective and they all said it was them. Then I asked them who was the best second detective after them and they said it was you, that’s why I realized you were the best ».

Did you see the human bias in this example ? When you ask a pro who is the best, he’ll answer you : « Me ! ». The pro does this because he wants to sell, he has his personal pride and maybe he really believes he’s the number 1 compared to others.

Which shows that it’s difficult to have the most objective answer possible with this question. By understanding this human bias, you can use a question that gets around that. This question is : « Okay, it’s obvious you’re the best but who’s second best after you ? ». In the majority of cases, the answer is objective.

Let’s take another example. An entrepreneur conducts a survey with his prospects to determine the selling price of a product. The question is : « What is the price you would pay to buy this product ? ». If you ask your prospects how they want to help them, they’ll be honest but when you talk about the selling price, it become complicated. When you ask the question about the selling price, they will always tell you a lower price compared to the price they could pay.

There are 2 reasons :

  1. When a person ansers this question, she thinks : « If I tell him I’m willing to pay 100 dollars, he’ll sell it to me at $100. So, I’ll tell him $50 like that it will be cheaper ». It’s a behavior that all human beings do (me and you included).

  2. There are people who don’t know how much they would be willing to pay because they can’t see the product. When they see the product and see what it can improve in their life, they’ll decide whether to buy it or not.

To solve the problem of the 1st reason, ask the question this way : « As you’re one of the people who helped me to create this product, you’ll have a special price, but what do you think the price is that the rest of the world should pay ? ». With this question, the prospect knows that he is going to have a special price so he can give a more objective answer.

To solve the problem of the 2nd reason, there is only one way. It’s showing the product to prospects.

When you do a survey to prospects for the sale price, it’s very important that prospects understand that they’re going to have a special price. Ask the questions : « What price would you pay to buy this product ? » and «  As you’re one of the people who helped me to create this product, you’ll have a special price. But what do you think the price is that the rest of the world should pay ». You will be surprised by the different answers you will have. Test it !

Obviously, it’s not only with this question that you will determine your selling price, it will be just a clue. It’s very useful to understand human psychology otherwise you risk choosing a selling price really too low that should be and earn really less money.

Create A Company In A Hyper Competitive Market

What’s up ? This is THE stephane ANDRE !!! I watched an Olivier Roland’s video  and I learned some good stuff.

People often tell me that they want to create a blog, a Youtube channel or a company but the market is very competitive and they wonder if it’s worth it. It’s true that in markets like personal development, fitness or photography, these are markets where you will not start in the same way as in a market where there is little competition.

It’s not because the market is hypercompetitive that you have no chance. The main thing is to differentiate yourself from others and to allow people to connect with you. That’s what happened to me a few months ago. I was looking for podcasts on fitness and I found Shrugged Collective . But I didn’t like the guys voice so I changed to The Model Health Show  and I like this podcast. These 2 podcasts are listened to by thousands (or millions) people and what is important to understand is that these podcasts can’t please everyone, it’s impossible.

There are people who will like what you do and there are people who will hate what you do. This is why there is a place for everyone. In theory, you can offer exactly the same product/service as many other people in a market but there are people who will buy your products/services rather than others because people have more feelings with you.

Shrugged Collective and The Model Health Show are the same thing, they’re podcasts about fitness. What makes the difference isn’t the content (because now, a lot of people make good content) but the podcast’s voice. The question you ask yourself when you’re listening a podcast is : « Am I going to spend hours and hours listening to that voice and that kind of elocution ». It’s the same with companies, especially on internet when you do Personal Branding (reputation) when you allow your audience to connect with you.

Have Your Own Authentic Style

It’s like in everyday life, there are people who will like and others who will hate you because we’re human beings. When you buy a computer or a smartphone, who will you buy it from ? You’ll buy it from people you like the most and it’s normal.

Of course, having your own authentic style isn’t the only way to differentiate yourself. But attention, it’s not because people like you that you’ll automatically have a business that works. It’s necessary to have an idea that has economic potential. What I have noticed is that people neglect the importance of connecting with the audience, the community or the clients.

I know there are people following me because they have a good feeling with me and not with my competitors. And others have a good feeling with my competitors and not with me. It’s not a problem, it’s normal, it’s human and it’s part of life.

Don’t be afraid to enter a market with hypercompetitiveness, there is always a place for you. In this case, it’s necessary to realize that it will be difficult to make your place in a competitive environment. It’s difficult because you should be in a market where there are behemoths. But the advantage of a competitive market is that you know it’s a profitable market because there are already a lot of people living on it.

Chi-Square Test With More Than 2 Categories

I have just enrolled in a Data Science course on Udemy  and I learned good stuff.

In this article, we will do a Chi-square test with more than 2 categories. We will use the A/B test « Country » which has 3 categories which corresponds to 3 countries : German, Spain and France. Select « Gender Actual » tab, make a copy with a right-click and select « Duplicate ».

Name the tab « Gender Actual (2) » by « Country Actual ».

In « Dimensions », move the variable « Geography » over « Gender » in « Columns » to replace « Gender » with « Geography ».

Here’s how to do an A/B statistical test when there are 3 categories. We’ll start with the classic method and then I’ll show you another way to do Chi-square test with any number of categories.

Let’s start with the classical method. In this case, there are 3 categories so we can’t use the online tool of the previous article. In the previous article we used an online tool with only 2 categories « Sample1 » and « Sample2 ». That’s why we’re going to use another online tool, click here  .

In this online tool, we can enter the values without using the total values. That is, we enter only the number of observations in each category. We simply need to enter the values that are on our A/B test. And I’m going to show you how to turn our A/B test into a table. In this way, it will be easier to enter the values in the online tool without making any mistakes.

Go to the « Show me » tool at the top right.

Click on « Swap Rows ans Columns » button.

Cool, now you have a table arranged in exactly the same way as the online tool.

In the online tool, we will select 2 rows and 3 columns.

As we have 3 categories and 2 possible results, we enter our values exactly as in the table we just created on Tableau.

Perfect, our table is ready. You can click on the « Calculate » button.

As you can see, we observe the same thing as the other online tool. There is our indicator « p » value which is less than 5%. Which means there is a meaning.

This statistical significance means that these results are valid for the total number of the bank’s clients and not just for the sample of 10 000 clients. We observe similar differences with A/B test « Country » whose results are based solely on the sample of 10 000 clients. We can conclude that in the total number of the bank’s clients, it’s the clients in Germany who are more likely to leave the bank. This is how we do things cleanly.

You saw, this online tool limited by 5 by 5 tables so you can’t use this tool when you have 6 categories or more. But fortunately it’s possible to do Chi-square test with any number of categories. It’s a special method and for you to understand that, I’ll give you a theoretical explanation.

Here we have 3 countries : German, Spain and France.

What we’re trying to compare is the clients number leaving the bank in each of these countries.

With our basic A/B test based on a sample of 10 000 clients, we obtained 16% for France, 32% for Germany and 17% for Spain. Now the question is : « Do we observe the same results on the total clients number of the bank ? », it means : « In general, does the country have a significant effect on the clients number leaving bank ? ». Germany has the largest number of clients leaving the bank so the idea is : « Why would we need to compare the 3 countries at the same time ? ».

If we do an A/B test statistical test with Germany and France and we get a significant difference in the clients number leaving the bank between these 2 countries, then that would mean that in general, the country has a significant effect on the clients number who bank. Indeed, if we find by comparing Germany and France that the Germans are more likely to leave the bank than the French, we can consider that Spain will not change anything. Germans will always be more likely to leave the bank than the French. Maybe there will be a different relationship between Germany and Spain but there will always be a statistically significant difference between France and Germany with a larger number of clients leaving the bank in Germany than France.

Here is a way to confirm that this logic is true. There is a test and the participants of this test are German, Spanish and French. Imagine that this test was done without looking at what is happening in Spain. Now you get the result and you ask yourself the question : « Would the results changed if you added Spain ? ». The answer is « no » because there is no interdependence between Germany, Spain and France. That is, the decision to leave the bank in France and Germany doesn’t depend on Spain. And therefore, it’s quite correct to separate the categories by putting 1 aside to compare the 2 others. And as now we have 2 categories, we can do a Chi-square test with the online tool that we used in the previous article.

So let’s go back to our worksheet and put a country aside to compare only 2 countries. Select « Country » tab.

What we observe is that the difference between Spain and France is very small, so it wouldn’t be interesting to do a Chi-square test between Spain and France. It’s more interesting to do a Chi-square test between Germany and France and to prove that there is a statistically significant difference between these 2 countries. This will be enough to conclude that the country has a statistically significant impact on the clients number who leave the bank.

We will make a copy of « Country Actual » to have a bar chart with absolute values. Select « Country Actual », right-click and select « Duplicate ».

We also need total absolute values, which means the total number of men and women. There is a very fast way to get that. Right-click on the vertical axis and select « Add Reference Line ».

Then in « Value », click on the drop-down on the right and select « Sum » to have the total sum of the observations.

And in « Scope », you select « Per Cell » option to specify that you want the total sums for each category, male and female.

Now, we have the total sum at the top of the bars. We will modify labels to have the absolute values. In « Label », we will change « Computation » to « Value » and click on the « OK » button.

Here’s how to enter the data :

For « Sample1 » in #success, you enter 810 because there are 810 people who left the bank. For « Sample1 » in #trials, you enter 5014 because there are 5014 people in total.

For « Sample2 » in #success, you enter 814 because there are 814 people who left the bank. For « Sample2 » in #trials, you enter 2509 because there are 2509 people in total.

Here is the verdict : « Sample2 is more successful ». « Sample2 » corresponds to German’s clients and #success is :« yes, the client left the bank ». This verdict means that of all the clients from German are more likely to leave the bank than clients from France. And look, there is something important, it’s « p<0.001 ». This means that the « p » is strictly less than 0.001. As you can see, « p » value is very small, which concludes that the tests are statistically significant.

Ooh, there’s another thing I wanted to show you with the tab « age » with the 2 bar charts in parallel.

As you can see, there are many categories (more than 5) because each category corresponds to a 5-year ago group with clients of the bank aged from 15 to 90 years old. This is a lot of comparison but it would be a good exercise for you to find what are the 2 categories to compare that shows that there is a significant statistic difference.

I give you a hint, compare slices from 50 to 54 years old or from 35 to 39 years olds. In fact, you should compare all peer categories where you observe difference on this basic A/B test. Do a basic A/B test with absolutes values. Then do a Chi-square test to check if the difference is statistically significant, I mean, if the result is valid for the total number of bank’s clients.

This is a way to statistically validate the insights we see onTableau. You see, it’s not very difficult and it’s effective. Here is a way to find insights on Tableau and validate them.

Stop To Be Shredded Everytime

I watched a Jamcore DZ’s video  and I learned good stuff.

Spring is here and I see that everyone wants to be shredded to show off this summer. I think it’s interesting to explain the difference between be shredded or cutting phase and losing weight.

Be shredded or cutting phase comes from the bodybuilding’s field. After taking muscle mass, be shredded allows to show your muscles striated in detail.

People confuse be shredded or cutting phase and a loss of weight. When you do a good weight loss, you lose water and fat without losing muscle mass and bone mass. When you’re shredded or cutting phase, you lower your bodyfat to 5% to see your muscles in detail as a bodybuilder competing.

Please, women and girls, stop saying that you are shredded or cutting phase. Naturally you have more fat than men and that’s normal because it’s to feed the baby when you will be pregnant. Your body programmed for that and that’s normal. For a woman or a girl to be shredded, it’s necessary to take steroids like women who participate in bodybuilding competitions. A clean weight loss is excellent and sufficient for toning and having a beautiful body.

Let’s talk about weight loss. There are plenty of stupid draconian weight loss programs. These programs cause loss of muscle mass, loss of bone mass, slow down metabolism and create health problems. I wrote 2 articles about it, click here  and there for Part 1  and Part 2 .

I agree with this point of view and I think it’s necessary to be patient before be shredded or cutting phase. Wait 5 years before doing your first cutting phase. Make a clean mass gain for 5 years. Jamcore DZ waited 7 years before to participate in his 1st competition. At the 2nd competition, he felt like he was flat net to his competitors. He waited 3 years before participate in his 3rd competition. 10 years to gain muscle clean with a healthy nutrition to have nice muscle mass when he’s shredded.

So wait at least 5 years to have a healty muscle mass gain before to be shredded or cutting phase. Maybe you find that long but see the reasons :

  • 1st reason : Learn and understand how your body works.

  • 2nd reason : Learn the art of patience. You’re going to have trouble but all the best things are hard to get. You will realize each summer with your friends who will show off but your friends are flat. They believe that they have muscle mass but in fact they’re thin and dry and you arrive and BOOOOM !

  • 3rd reason : After 5 years when you’re shredded, it will encourage you for the next cutting phase. You know that you have to rest your body for several years by gaining muscles in a healthy way to have a better body for the next time. I know that there are people who want to be shredded after 2 years but the results are poor : less experience and more muscle loss because there aren’t enough muscles that was built so a small muscle mass visible. Me, the first time I was shredded, I was disgusted, I felt flat because I had a small muscle mass visible.

    It’s depressing and most people when they’re in this situation, they think to take steroids to show off with pictures on social media. This is happening right now on social media.

  • 4th reason : The more you’re shredded, the more you will regress because you lose more and more muscles. When you’re shredded, you lose some of your muscles, this is the process. So if you do this every years or every 6 months, you lose each time a part of the muscles that you have built.

To start, people who tell you that you can do this all your life are liars. When you start training, you do something new to your body several times a week. It’s like a romantic relationship with a girl. It’s beautiful and after 6 months, she starts to piss you off, you start to piss her off and after you breakup. For muscle mass, it’s the same principle. At first you’ll build muscles and you’ll change your composition’s body, it’s normal.

After a while (2-3 years), your body starts to adapt and you stagnate. That’s when you’re looking for a training system that suits you, you focus on muscle isolation during an exercise, you improve your recovery and you evolve slowly. Gaining healthy muscle takes time and you have to accept it.

At the beginning of your training, you’ll lose fat and water and gain muscle at the same time for 2-3 years and then you’ll stagnate. Most of people who gain muscle get fat because they eat too much and don’t do cardio. Cardio all year is important to help control your weight. When I say doing cardio, it means doing cardio at a middle level, not cardio at a high level to be shredded. Doing cardio while you’re gaining muscle helps you progress because you keep a metabolism that works.

We’ll explore Tableau’s tools

From the connection manager, we’ll go into the Tableau’s workspace.

Click on the « Sheet1 » tab at the bottom of the window.

Here is the Tableau’s workspace.

The 2 important elements of the workspace are « Data » on the left and the workspace on the right. It’s in the workspace that you’ll create tables and charts.

We’ll start with « Data » on the left.

« Data » divided into 2 zones : dimensions and measures.

The dimensions and measures are 2 different rules that will allow you to manipulate data.

Tableau sets the numerical values in « measures » and the categorical or quantitative variables in « dimension ». This is the Tableau’s settings by default.

There is also another way to explain « dimension » and « measures ». The « dimensions » are independent variables and the « measures » are dependent variables.

For exemple, « Units » is a measure, it’s the number of items sold per product. « Region » is a dimension, it’s the geographic region where the product sold. With 2 elements we can know how many items sold by region. This means that « Region » is an independent variable and « Units » is a dependent variable because it will be grouped by region.

But if you don’t like it, you can move the entities between dimension and measures and the opposite by click and drag.

In the menu bar, at the top, there is « File » where you can open and save file.

Now, let’s study the workspace.

In the workspace, the main elements are « Columns » and « Rows ». This is where you decide which data goes in columns and rows in your worksheet.

You can also choose different format for these elements like colors, size, text level of detail and tooltips (useful tool optional).

Let’s do a test. Use data from « Region » (which is in « dimension »). Move « Region » with a click and drop to the center of your workspace. Now, « Region » is in the element « Rows ».

A table appears in your workspace.

You put a dimension in your workspace. Now put a measure in your workspace.

Uses the « Units » data. Move « Units » with a click and drop next to the « Region » column.

As you can see, Tableau automatically put « Region » in the « Rows » element and the « Units » data aggregated by region. In this way, you can tell how many items were sold by region.

Now, what you can do is to move « SUM(Units) » to the « Columns » element.

And then, you have a « bar chart » to see how many items have been sold by region. You can enlarge the graphic with a click and drop.

Let’s look at the tools that are in « Show Me » zone.

Click on « Pie chart » to have this chart’s type.

Click on « Size » icon and drag from left to right you can increase the chart’s size.

In this chart, each region has a color and proportion of items sold by region.

You can also test the « bubble chart ». Tableau organizes the data automatically and everything and placed in the « Marks ».

You can test « Treemaps » chart. This is the same principle as « bubble chart » but it’s rectangles instead of circles.

As you can see in « Show Me », there are charts disabled. This is because you need some elelments in your data to be able to activate them.

For example for the « Area chart », you need « date »data to activate it.

Improve Discipline

I watched an Olivier Roland’s video  and I learned good stuff.

Here is how I worked, a few year ago. I had a project that I really wanted to do and I thought to myself : « When I come back home tonight after eating, I work on it ». And after eating, I preferred to play video games or watch a TV show until sleep. I think that situation has already happened to you.

Now I realize that if I had done these projects, I would have had more fulfilling lifestyle, I would have leaned to manage my money earlier and I would have interesting contacts earlier. Maybe I wouldn’t have had it all earlier but in any case a part, that’s for sure.

Discipline and productivity are important skills to create and evolve a project. I did project but these weren’t my most ambitions projects. These weren’t projects with big risks, so I dissatisfied inside of me. The problem is that all this insatisfaction transformed into frustration.

There are a lot of things I wanted to do in theory and that I never did.

As you know on my blog, I mainly talk about fitness/bodybuilding and I notice that many people enroll in a gym with a 3 months subscription and go to the gym only 2 times. This is a classic case.

Know that there is a solution because before I had very little discipline and productivity and now it’s improving more and more.

Track you progress

To have more discipline and productivity, you need to make sure that this is a long-term goal. This requires several years to have concrete results like for sport. We would like to have results right away but the best things take time because it’s an exploration in yourself.

This is not going to be Disneyland every day because there are times when you’re going to tell yourself you’re not going get there. That’s why you need to keep track of your results. It’s interesting to note why you’re less motivated to continue your project to better understand yourself. You’ll read books on personal development, follow training, meet people who have the same goal as you. With this methods you’ll build your own toolbox to improve your discipline and your productivity.

What is cool when we keep track of our results is that we can see our evolution from month to month, year by year. It’s funny to see your results 2 years ago to really realize your progress.

Increase your success

To find a way to improve my discipline and productivity, I read on internet that enrolling in a group of people who shared the same goals as me could be extremely motivating. So I looked for websites and Facebook’s groups. What is interesting in groups is that every week a person offers a challenge. Then everybody share their results and everyone shares their impressions.

It’s also possible that you find a person in your entourage who has the same goal as you. I find it really cool to put people around you into groups because the more people there are the greater the motivation.

You see, the fact of telling everyone that you are challenging, force you to be disciplined and productive to complete the project. And there were always funny punishments for people who didn’t show their project. And little by little, you improve and often you have proposals to make competitions.

I used to do this for sport at first but this concept is used in all fields such writing, photography, dancing (I like dance salsa), cooking, etc. And in all these field there are competitions several times in the year. Here is an example that astonished me, watch the paper airplane world championship .

No need to be a shaolin monk

By tracking your results, you’ll find ways to boost your will without it being painful. You know, you don’t have to work to have the discipline’s level of a Shaolin monk, you just need to have a discipline’s level that allows you to make your projects a reality.

Several scientific studies have made an important discovery in order to better understand human beings. This is because the will is an element that trains as a muscle to develop. Which means that to develop your discipline, you have to train it like a muscle and it doesn’t happen overnight.

Here are resources, this article. Kelly McGonigal’s book « The Willpower instinct ». Viktor E. Frankl’s book «  Man’s search to meaning »  on attitude and discipline in the worst circumstances.
