A concussion is a traumatic brain injury that alters mental state or creates others symptoms. Many people think they have no concussion because they have not lost consciousness. You must know that it’s possible to have a concussion without losing consciousness. Often football or rugby players say : « I just got my bell rung » when they have been hit on the head that makes the ears rings, but these symptoms are often consistent with concussion.

Signs

  • Balance problems

  • Difficulty communicating, concentrating

  • Dizziness

  • Drowsiness

  • Fatigue

  • Feeling emotional

  • Feeling mentally foggy

  • Headache

  • Irritability

  • Memory difficulties

  • Nausea

  • Nervousness

  • Numbness or tingling

  • Sadness

  • Sensitivity to light or noise

  • Sleeping more than usual or difficulty falling asleep

  • Visual problems (blurry or double vision)

  • Vomiting

Diagnostic

As soon as a concussion is suspected, a trained coach, certified athletic trainer or the team physician should immediately perform an initial « sideline » evaluation, including :

  • Symptoms list review

  • Focused neurological exam

  • Focused orientation exam that tests short-term memory recall such as the event, play, opponent, score or last meal.

  • Focused orientation exam that tests long-term recall such as name, birth date, place of birth.

  • Assessment of athlete’s ability to stay attentive to a complex task such as reciting months backwards.

If a person is suspected of having a concussion and there is no diagnosis, a concussion may place an athlete at risk of developing second impact syndrome. It’s a potentially fatal injury that occurs when an athlete suffers a second head injury before the old head injury has completely healed.

Second impact syndrome

Second impact syndrome is a potentially fatal injury that occurs when an athlete suffers a second head injury before the old head injury has been fully healed. Unfortunately, it’s complicated to know if the brain has been healed from the first injury. Even after all symptoms resolved, it’s possible that the healing isn’t complete and that it increases the risk to the brain of having the second impact syndrome. Neurocognitive testing can help doctors or physician decide when the athlete can return to the competition in the best conditions.

Neurocognitive testing

Neurocognitive testing is a questionnaire (usually on the computer) that athletes do that deals with several areas of brain function, including memory, problem solving, reaction times, brain processing speed and post-concussion symptoms. It’s most valid if the athlete has a pre-injury baseline test on file to compare the post concussion test. This information can be really helpful for the doctor or physician to decide when the athlete can return to the competition.

When to return to the competition

All athletes suffer concussion (whatever the gravity) should pass an evaluation by a qualified health care provider before returning to the competition. Athletes should return to competition after they have been completely cleared of all concussion symptoms and have no symptoms during and after physical tests.

Baseline testing is important for assessing concussion symptoms after an incident. The baseline testing often includes neurocognitive tests, symptom checklists, sideline assessment tools such as the Sideline Concussion Assessment Tool and balance testing.

Statistics

  • Athletes who have already had a concussion are more likely to have another concussion.

  • Children and teenagers are more likely to have concussion and take longer to heal than adults.

Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injuries

Knee is the largest and most complex joint of the body. There are 4 primary ligaments (with their muscles and tendons) and secondary ligaments for the knee to function properly. Here are the ligaments of the knee : there are 2 ligaments on the side the medial collateral ligament (MCL) and the lateral collateral ligament (LCL) and two crossed ligaments in the center of the knee, the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL).

Anterior cruciate ligament connects the front top part of the shine bone to the back bottom part of the thigh bone and keeps the shin bone from sliding forward.

There are several ways to have an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament :

  • The injury can be done because of a direct hit on the knee, which often happens in team sport.

  • The injury can be done without contact with an object in a situation where the knee forced to be in a abnormal position, which causes a tear in one or more ligaments of the knee. Or when an athlete in the race change direction. Or when an athlete make a hyperextend of the knee when landing a jump, which often happends in agility sports.

Diagnostic

In the majority of cases, the doctor is able to identify what is the injured ligament. But the knee can also be injured at the joint on the surface and in this situation, it’s more difficult to diagnose because of knee swelling. To make an accurate diagnosis, it will be necessary to use a MRI scan or arthroscopy.

Prevent

There are several fast, powerful movements that lengthen (eccentric phase) and shorten (concentric phase) a muscle. These prevention programs are for injuries without contact. These exercises are to improve the nerves/muscle control of the knee. These prevention programs use plymetrics, balance and strength/stability exercises.

Plymetrics

It’s a fast, powerful movement that lengthens (eccentric phase) and shortens (concentric phase) a muscle. The concentric phase increases the muscle power. Here is an example, an athlete who jumps from a box and immediately jumps into the air after touching the floor.

Balance

Balance exercices are done with the wobble or balance board. It’s also possible to perfom exercices by throwing a ball with a partner while balancing on one leg.

Strength/stability

To improve single-leg core strength and stability, there are excellent exercices such as jumping and landing on one leg with the knee flexed and momentarily maintaining this position.

Surgical treatment

In the past, there was a technique that consisted of stitching the ligament together but it was rarely successful. Currently, the technique involves reconstructing the anterior cruciate ligament by building a new ligament from tissue taken from one of the other tendons around the knee or from on organ donation. This tissue passed through drill holes in the thigh bone and the shin bone, and then ancored in place to create a new anterior cruciate ligament. Over time, this transplant becomes mature and becomes a new living ligament in your knee.

Recovery

Rheabilitation of the knee after the reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament requires time and work. To have a complete function, this can last between 6 weeks and 6 months depending on the severity and level of activity. Rehabilitation rate may take time depending on the specific requirements of the sport/physical activity of the individual.

The overall success rate of the anterior cruciate ligament surgery is very good. A lot of study show that more than 90% of patients are able to return to sport without symptoms of knee instability. It’s true that some patients complain of stiffness and pain after surgery, that is why it’s necessary to make an aggressive rehabilitation until the new surgical technique to reduce these problems.

  • One of the most commonly injured ligament in the knee

  • Female athletes participating in basketball and soccer are 2-8 times more likely to suffer anterior cruciate ligament injury.

  • Athlete who suffer anterior cruciate ligament injury at increased risk of arthritis development later in life.

Optimize your working time

Use Pareto’s Law by focusing on the 20% of your actions that contribute 80% of your results and using Parkinson’s Law to determine how long to complete a task.

Here are other actions to put in place to optimize your time :

  • Don’t disperse yourself

  • Stop multitasking – This has been scientifically proven to be a waste of time and productivity. Read this scientific study .

  • Stop interruptions – Things like smartphone notifications, emails or messages.

  • Group actions.

  • Remove unnecessary tasks – To find out if you’re doing a useless task, ask yourself this question from Peter Drucker : « Why am I doing this ? Is it necessary ? » With this question, you can easily delete unnecessary tasks. Exceptionally, you can use a notification on your smartphone that displays this question every 30 minutes. It’s a type of reminder all day long.

  • Identify the 20% of things and people that cause 80% of your problems and delete them. If it’s someone in your family, talk to that person 2-3 times a week instead of every day.

Automate everything you can

Many tasks can be automated in companies. For example to send messages on social media (I use Buffer  ). It’s possible to automate a sale on internet, it’s the customer who does everything. The customer looks for a product, uses his/her credit card by filing out the payment form of the website, and the bill created automatically based on the information provided by the customer, etc.

It’s also possible to automate a company, this is the case of Drop Shipping. Drop Shipping is when you sell products that you don’t have in stock and that are sent directly from the supplier to the customers. Amazon offers this type of service too, you can put in their catalogs products that you sell and entrust to Amazon for the stock’s management, sending and returns of products. I wrote an article on Amazon’s drop shipping, here.

There is also the case of muses that explains Tim Ferriss in his book « 4 hours workweek ».

Delegate

Focus on your strengths and delegate the rest. Create a list of tasks that you want to delegate with instructions. Then gives these tasks to a team by assigning each type of task to a specialist.

Duplicate

There is no point in reinventing the wheel. You can duplicate the recipes of your mentors success and use that in your own company.

Recycle

A job that you did can be reused in a different form. For example, articles from a blog can be used to make a book, a podcast or a video.

Determine your goal and strategy

Determine your goal, your process to reach it and the strategy to put in place. Here are some examples of strategies for developing your wealth :

  • Replace your salary with real estate income and start your own company.

  • Keep your work as employee and invest a maximum on stock market to create passive income.

  • Create a company to have a complementary income like a blog, a podcast or a Youtube channel.

  • Buy a piece of land and build several apartments (condos).

  • Etc.

Optimize your management to spend less money

  • Analyse the things you have to pay to eliminate waste : unnecessary subscription, insurance too expensive, etc.

  • Print your bank statement and analyze it

  • Seeking a way to achieve the same result by spending less : compare, buy cheaper, negotiate to save money for the things you really need.

  • Optimize your taxation by reducing your taxes.

Recycle your skills and your work

You can work on something once and get paid several times. You can create a seminar, keep 3 children instead of 1, you walk 5 dogs instead of 1, etc.

You can also use a job you have already done to create complementary income. Foe example, if you like to take picture, you can put them in stock photos on internet.

Duplicate the processes known to create wealth

  • Pay yourself first

  • Make money work for you by saving at least 10% of your income to invest them.

  • Invest in yourself with training to learn new skills

Here are the options you can use to create a company that serves your life (and not your life serving your company). With internet it’s easier to use these levers with a blog, podcast or a Youtube channel by creating content.

I watched an Olivier Roland’s video  and I learned good stuff.

Everyone wants to work more efficiently to save time and make more money. There are 2 books to learn how to do this and I’m going to do a synthesis of 2. Maybe you already know theses 2 books, it’s « 4 Hours Workweek  » by Tim Ferriss  and « The One Minute Millionaire » by Mark Victor and Robert Allen.

Before you start, it’s important that you know that there is a special relationship between time and money. The idea is to better manage your time in your day to make your money work for you and make more money. There are several actions to put in place to do this and these actions based on 3 laws :

  • Leverage – Leverage gives you the speed to reach your goals faster. With a lever, you can control several elements. There are 5 types of leverage in 5 forms. We’ll see this in detail.

  • Pareto’s law.

  • Parkinson’s law

Let’s start with the leverage and its different points of support. There is a very interesting quote from Archimedes :

« Give me a place to stand, and a lever long enough and I will move the world »

Leverage allows you to reach your financial goals more easily and quickly. The higher the fulcrum is, the higher you can go up and far.

Money from others

Very useful in the real estate because the money of the banks and the tenant can allow you to have an additional income and a heritage. This heritage is largely financed by the money of others.

Skills of others

By meeting professionals who have more experience than you and mentors on your professional field, you can follow their examples. This allow you to access years of knowledge in a very short time, and avoid making mistakes that can cost you a lot of money and waste a lot of time.

Ideas of others

Find a partner who is willing to share ideas. For example to create your business instead of reinventing the wheel, you can join a franchise network to use and implement a business model that has been proven.

Time of others

Use the skills of someone who has more experience than you, by this way you can save. Delegate tasks.

Work of others

Support a team that is capable to manage things for you without you need to give last minutes instructions. Create a team with a list of instructions so that they are as autonomous as possible.

Mentors

Mentors are an incredible source of information. Select the people who inspire you from the people who have succeeded in the field you want to master.

Team

It’s known to many we can accomplish more than alone. A team makes it possible to work in synergy and to find solutions more quickly. Find people who have the same values as you and who have complementary skills.

One of the best example of a successful team is the team Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs who together created Apple. Steve Wozniak is a computer genius, he created the first Apple computer, the Apple 1 and he largely created the Apple 2 that made the success of Apple. Steve Wozniak is a very nice person but at the time, he didn’t have the skills to sell these computers. Steve Jobs was a sales genius but he didn’t have the skills to create these computers.

Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs separately have never been able to create something as impressive as Apple, the association of these 2 people who shared the same values and the desire to offer people computers easier to use have marked the history of computer with Apple.

Networks

The more professional relationships you have, the greater the leverage will be. Grow your network in the areas where you want to share and work.

Skills and tools

Having essential tools to reach the goal and mastering the operation of theses tools increase success. Skills to master are the power of persuasion, rhetoric and humor.

Systems

Using a good system increases the chances of success. To make money, there are millions of systems (there are so many on internet). The perfect system has 5 characteristics :

  1. No need to liquidity

  2. No risk or little

  3. Require no time

  4. Require no management

  5. Require little effort

The truth is that is very, very, very difficult to find an investment system that has these 5 characteristics, but you have to try to get as close as possible to work less and earn more money.

Pareto’s law

Parkinson’s law or the 20/80’s law discovered by the economist and sociologist Vilfredo Pareto. This principle explains that 20% of the countries of the world share 80% of the wealth and that within these countries 20% of the people share 80% of the wealth. Here is the basis of this principle : « 80% of effects come from 20% of the causes », which means that a minimum of causes create a maximum of effects. Always try to identify in your actions or in your company, the 20% of actions which bring 80% of results.

Parkinson’s law

Parkinson’s law discovered by historian and essayist Cyril Northcote Parkinson. This principle explain that the work extends so as to occupy the time available for the completion of a task. For example, if you put 2 hours to do a task that can be done in 1 hour, you still go for 2 hours. To have more time, we must force ourselves to have less. The basis of this principle is to do a task at 50% or 75% of the recommended time to do it.

In this section, we saw leverage, Pareto’s law and Parkinson’s law. In the 2nd part, we’ll see the 5 actions to be effective and the 4 actions to make more money.

Back To The Source Of Human Strength (Part 2)

Hypertrophy

When I started to train, I thought I can increase the amount of muscle fibers with strength training program. The truth is we have a specific number of muscle fibers. We can only increase the size of our muscles fibers, this is hypertrophy.

I discovered that there were several hypertrophies. Usually when people talk about hypertrophy, it’s sarcoplasmic hypertophy.

  • Sarcoplasmic hypertrophy

    This hypertrophy allows you to increase the amount of sarcoplasmic fluid in your muscles. This can increase the size of one of your muscles by 30 %.

  • Myofibril hypertrophy

    This hypertrophy allows you to strengthen your myofibril, the part of the muscle that contracts. This increase the strength of your muscle fibers, build strong muscles and super dense.

  • Transient hypertrophy

    This hypertrophy allows you to increase temporary the size of one of your muscles during and immediately after an exercice due to an accumulation of fluid (I still don’t know if it’s the sarcoplasmic fluid or glycogen) in the intercellular space. This is what gives the effect « the pump ».

To summarize to buid a muscle super dense and strong, it’s myofibril hypertrophy. To have bigger muscle, it’s sarcoplasimic hypertrophy. Transient hypertrophy is temporary and appears in the other 2 hypertrophies during the training.

During a strength training, here is what happens :

  • During an exercice you’ll break muscle tissue. Your body will repair this muscle and it will become stronger. Whenever you break muscle tissue, your body will do this process.
  • When you increase the number of repetitions, you increase the storage of glycogen in your muscle. This is where you muscle gets bigger.

For the training program

Strength training isn’t just lift weights. It’s more interesting and more complex than that.

A little help for this Excel’s table

  • Repetition (Rep) => An exercice is composed of a starting position and an arrival position. A repetition is when you make the movement from the starting position to the arrival position and you return to the starting position. All that make a repetition. For exemple when you squat, the starting position is standing. The arrival position is when your thighs are parallel to the floor and you return to the starting position, standing.

  • X Rep Max => This is the number of repetitions with the heaviest weight you are able to control. By exemple, 1 Rep Max (1RM), is that the weight is so heavy that you can do only one repetition. 10RM, is that you can control the weight successfully to do 10 repetitions. In the 11st, it’s the failure.

With this Excel table, you can have an idea to how you can do to gain stength (myofribril hypertophy) : A low number of repetition and heavy weight. To increase the size of your muscles (sarcoplasmic hypertrophy) : A high number of repetition and light weight.

ATTENTION : This Excel table give us an idea of how to do to reach our goal. It’s not something specific. When you do a high number of repetition to increase the size of your muscle, you gain also a little strength. Our body is smarter than us.

It’s for this reason I never understand girls or women who don’t want to « get bulk », so they do 3 sets of 16 repetitions or 5 sets of 1000 repetitions with a dumbbell of 2kg (4.4lbs).

It’s hard for a girl to bulk, no matter the weight or the number of repetitions, if they want to increase the size of muscles, that’s exactly what they have to do because it would make sarcoplasmic hypertrophy.

Recovery

I’m sure you’ve already heard that muscles are built in the kitchen, not in the gym.

It’s because when you’re in the gym, you break your muscle fibers. When you’re outside of the gym, your body heals and your muscles become bigger and stronger. So it’s important to take a recovery’s day in your strength training program.

The general rule is to wait 40 hours before to work the same muscle group again.

Remember that your muscles works in team, which means that when you work your chest, you also work shoulders muscles and arms muscles.

Everyone at his own pace to recover, it depends on diet, sleep’s quality, age workout and other items like stretching or massage.

The basis of strength training is 4 days of training per week and one recovery’s day.

Sore muscles or DOMS

DOMS is the acronym for Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness. Sore means that your muscles haven’t recovered to 100 % (hence the « delayed onset »). This can last 1-2 days after your workout and this is normal. The process for your body to rebuild your muscles takes several days after a workout.

It’s normal that you have sore muscle for several days after your first training or after a long break. With each exercice, your muscle gets used to a movement and adapts to the stress caused by this movement so that you have less sore muscles. Stretching helps you to decrease sore muscles.

I watched a Jamcore DZ’s video  and there is stuff to share.

How to have no more belly ? A machine seen on tv ? A rough diet ? A supplement like a pill ? First these things worked for you ?

Before I tell your the secret to have no more belly, listen this story.

Story

This is the Bobby’s story. A handsome guy with a nice body. He was famous in the gym where he trained. Bobby liked his physique and make selfies everytime. Bobby was proud and everybody liked him. One time, in the gym, he discovered Stacey who made a selfie of her booty. BOOM, he looked her, she looked him and they felt in love.

3 months later, they get married. 9 months, they had a baby, Wayne. Now Bobby must work harder to support his family but the problem is he can’t train because he has no more energy. When he looks his mirror, he sees something on his abs growing and growing.

He notices than Stacey gains also weight. Bobby and Stacey are depressed because of theirs bodies. They remember the selfies and they’re more depressed. Bobby suffers and everytimes he says to himself : « This monday, I go to train ! » and when the monday comes, he has no more energy. Stacey can’t cook, she has no more energy because she take care of Wayne. So they eat burgers and pizzas. Right now, Bobby can’t see the mirror because he gained 30kg (66lbs).His best friends is the ground, he looks only it.

How to do to help Bobby and Stacey. Bobby can’t help Stacey because he can’t help himself. They need to find a solution because by this way, Wayne will be overweight. Bobby and Stacey don’t want other students laught about Wayne’s weight.

The Secret

The secret ? Be responsible of your body. Stop to listening bullshits like with a diet, pills or exercice, you can make your belly disappear ! Be organized ! Seek the person inside of you who want a better health. Be organized to reach your goals.

Environment

Change your friends. Negatives friends, friends with bad health, don’t see them no more except if they want to change theirs lifestyle with you.

Change food in the kitchen. Throw out all junk food and buy healthy food like fruits, chicken, tuna, oatmeal, olive oil, peanut butter (homemade), etc. Learn to cook healthy meals. Cook together it solidifies the family. You are a team.

Food

Prepare meals in advance for all day. By this way you don’t eat junk food and you don’t lose your money. Women, naturally, have more fat than men and it’s normal because it’s to be pregnant. Men don’t have excuses. When you manage your foods, you don’t have overweight’s problem. It’s true, plan meals in the day.

When you have the time to watch a tv show, you have the time to cook. You can watch your tv show in the weekend. Foods before tv shows ! Internet is a beautiful source of healthy recipes, it’s simple.

Stop eat pizzas, ice-cream, etc. Move, find the person inside you who want do something, no one who wait for a magic spell. This one is lost forever !
