Avoid Being Workaholic

What’s up ? This is THE stephane ANDRE !!! I watched an Olivier Roland’s video and I learned some good stuff.

There is a trick to avoid being a workaholic that the majority of entrepreneurs don’t do. It’s to have a productive activity outside of work (because the company is based on a passion). If you’re not sure what a productive activity is, you can read this article I wrote. Click here ].

A lot of entrepreneurs are workaholics, which means that they’re work addicts. It’s not really a bad behavior, especially in the early years of the company because there are many new things to learn and few employees. But in the long term, it can block you to achieve the success you should have.

When I say « work addict », I don’t mean that a person is an addict like with cocaine, heroine, crystale methamphetamine, etc. We, human beings, are afraid of emptiness. This is very well explained in the Tim Ferriss book « 4-hour Workweek » . For example, you become more and more efficient using the 20/80 method (Pareto’s law) and you manage to earn 2 hours of free time per week. Now, what are you going to do with these 2 hours of free time ? Are you going to sit and count the insects ? No ! And as today more and more entrepreneurs have a laptop, they’ll continue to work on the laptop.

The problem of working during free time are :

  • Too much nose to the grindstone and do things that aren’t really useful. It prevents you from having peace of mind, serenity, being creative, decompressing, taking a step back, etc.
  • Work to work. For many people, consciously or unconsciously, if they don’t work, they’ll be bored. So they’ll do things that aren’t really useful to be busy. We can call it « intelligent procrastination ». With « intelligent procrastination » people around you see that you’re working but it’s not things that really make your company evolve. For example, spending 2 days choosing the font and colors of your website is « intelligent procrastination ».
  • In the long term doing things that are not really useful for the company’s evolution, will have negative effects. You’ll lose you serenity and have more stress. The symptoms of this state of mind are that you have the impression that everyone is stupid. At that moment, you have to take a holiday right away, otherwise you’ll have a burn-out.

I know it’s a little paradoxical because the first years of the company, you have to work as much as you can because there are lots of things to do and there is no budget to pay employees, but it’s important to have a productive activity to keep the balance in your life.

Usually when you start looking for an idea to start a company, you make a list of the things you like to do the most. This productive activity can be one of those things from the list that wasn’t used to create your company. This can be an activity such as flying a plane, kickboxing, meditation or something else that allows you to relax and forget about work.

An Extraordinary Tool To Solve All Your Problems

Nature has given an extraordinary tool to every human being. This tool has different performance depending on the people but it’s the best for solving problems compared to the tools invented by humans.

This tool is our brain. This tool is better than a computer because a computer needs a human to work. For now, artificial intelligence has lower performance than the human brain.

Unfortunately, many of us don’t use our brains to find solutions and solve problems that are important to us. Many of us consume a lot of distractions. The question is : « Are we asking enough questions to our brain to find solution ? ». If you don’t give problems to your brain, your brain will be less and less efficient. It’s the same principle for your body.

If you give junk food to your body all day long, you will be fat, bitter, you will not have any more energy, you will not have any more libido. Everything that will comes out of you brain will be diminished in quality and quantity. If you will give healthy food to your body all day long, you will be slim, you will have more energy, you will have a better libido. Everything that comes out of your brain will be increased in quality and quantity.

To improve the brain to solve problems, it’s necessary to ask questions. A question is the interface between our brain and reality. This is what will put the brain in mode : « search for solutions ». By asking questions, you will look for different angles of approach to deal with the problem. The better the question and the better the solution to the reality of the world.

To have a good quality of question, it’s necessary to learn to educate oneself with books, trainings, meeting people who share their experiences, etc. Realize that you have to dedicate time to solve problems, allows you to organize your days. It’s like dedicating a few hours in your day to play sports. There is a method that I advise you to test, it’s to have a diary.

Attention, it’s a special diary because you’ll ask yourself questions. The first thing is that you’ll tell events of your life and this will allow you to better understand them and better understand yourself. And the second thing is that you’re going to ask yourself questions. There will be general questions like: «  How can I become happier ? ». And more specific questions like : « How can I become happier with the 80/20’s law (Pareto’s principle)  from today and see a measurable result next week ? ».

With questions, you put your brain in mode : « search for solutions » and you find several ideas to test to solve the problem. It’s the human process to find a solution since first hominids. Imagine, millions years ago, first hominids already found solutions because of a constraint. Imagine this scene, a hominid finds an animal with a carapace that is dead. The hominid is hungry and seeing the animal dead, he’s even more hungry. He asks himself this question : « How can I eat this animal that I can’t eat ? ». His brain goes into mode : « search for solutions ». After a few minutes, he remembers that by tapping a stone on something, the stone become sharper. After several tests, he manages to cut the animal with a carapace that dead to eat it.

This human process is a virtuous circle. You ask yourself questions to find solutions to problems. These solutions create other constraints that lead to others problems. So you have to ask yourself other questions to find a solutions. To evolve, we need challenges and there are always challenges in the world. Do you realize that millions of years ago, first hominids created tools with stones and wood and today we have internet technology ? With internet, people from distant country can read my blog’s articles 24/24 7/7, it’s incredible.

Among these questions, there will always be questions that will have different answers depending on what the situation you’re in your life. For example the question : « How can I become happier ? ». When you’re single, you have a solution. When you’re in a relationship, you have another solution and when you have children, you have another different solution. Solutions are influenced by different variants in your life and it’s important to ask yourself this question throughout your life.

Reserve some time in you day to ask yourself questions to solve problems. It’s a kind of physical activity for your brain. It’s a good process to become a better version of yourself. But beware, there are solutions that you will find quickly and others, it will be necessary to work on for months or years to find the solution.

How To Reduce Stress (Part 1)

I am doing a synthesis of the Dale Carnegie’s book “How to stop worrying and start living”  and other sources on internet for a blueprint to manages stress in 4 steps.

Stress is about change, it means adapting to the environment of a changing structure. Stress is a feeling triggered by the interpretation of an event. It’s a reaction related to the constraints and the pressure undergone in its environment. Stress can be interpreted as something positive, whether it’s considered a challenge or as something negative, if it’s considered a harmful event.

The truth is that stress is a mistake of reasoning in relation to the attitude or behavior we adopt. This is an answer that isn’t adequate. It’s an alert for mental dysfunction as the body gives us an alert for physical pain. Fortunately, people can learn to control stress in 4 steps : Take a step back and analyze what triggered the stress ; anticipate and visualize ; organize yourself and communicate and turn away or adapt and accept.

1st step – Take a step back and analyze

It’s necessary to step back and analyze what triggered the stress. Because before trying to solve that, it’s important to know what caused it. By analyzing what caused the stress, we can avoid certain consequences.

To do that, here’s what you can do :

  • Make a list of sources of annoyance that you have in your family, friends, school, work, transportation, etc. Once you have found them, classify them from the most impacting to the least impacting. You can also do a 20/80 analysis, that means identify the 20% of the sources that bring you 80% of your stress.

  • Ask yourself these questions : « What is the problem ? What is the cause of this stress in these sources ? What are the most serious consequences that I suffer of my experience ? »

  • Understand the emotion that created in these moments. Then check if it’s a real fear or rather a theoretical concern that doesn’t have much to happen in your life.

If a situation is truly unavoidable, you need to prepare yourself to accept it. We must give up the impossible because it’s extremely stressful to have no way to change a situation. To avoid this, you need to anticipate situations that may lead you into an impasse. Once these situations identified, you must try to really avoid them or change the course of things from the start.

It’s impossible to keep control of all things in your life. It’s useless to set inaccessible goals.

2nd step – anticipate and visualize

The best way to handle stress is to anticipate. Based on the list you made in the first step (source of stress), imagine solutions and possible answers. Ask yourself these questions : « Why did you agree to be in this situation ? ». If what you do make sense, it limits the stress.

Decide how you want to live a situation. An event that happens to you can have not effect on you until you choose words to qualify it. If you say that an event is happy, boring, sad or extraordinary, it can become so. By qualifying the event, you modify the perception that you have of this event.

The way you see the event determines your body’s reaction. So take a moment to think before judging and classyfying a situation as negative.

Take Olivier Roland’s example. When Olivier Roland began to meditate, his neighbor’s dog was barking. At first it disturbed Olivier to focus on his breathing, it was stressful and annoying. After a while, Olivier realized that it wasn’t the barking dog that was stressful, it was Olivier’s interpretation of the situation. From the moment that Olivier decided that the barking dog was something neutral or positive, he began to appreciate when the dog barks. It’s a sign of life.

Imagination can be used to help fight stress. Get in shape before a stressful event. You can create a positive state of mind when an event is negative. Think of something positive like music, a holiday, projects in progress. Visualize a happy moment, a happy memory.

Optimize your working time

Use Pareto’s Law by focusing on the 20% of your actions that contribute 80% of your results and using Parkinson’s Law to determine how long to complete a task.

Here are other actions to put in place to optimize your time :

  • Don’t disperse yourself

  • Stop multitasking – This has been scientifically proven to be a waste of time and productivity. Read this scientific study .

  • Stop interruptions – Things like smartphone notifications, emails or messages.

  • Group actions.

  • Remove unnecessary tasks – To find out if you’re doing a useless task, ask yourself this question from Peter Drucker : « Why am I doing this ? Is it necessary ? » With this question, you can easily delete unnecessary tasks. Exceptionally, you can use a notification on your smartphone that displays this question every 30 minutes. It’s a type of reminder all day long.

  • Identify the 20% of things and people that cause 80% of your problems and delete them. If it’s someone in your family, talk to that person 2-3 times a week instead of every day.

Automate everything you can

Many tasks can be automated in companies. For example to send messages on social media (I use Buffer  ). It’s possible to automate a sale on internet, it’s the customer who does everything. The customer looks for a product, uses his/her credit card by filing out the payment form of the website, and the bill created automatically based on the information provided by the customer, etc.

It’s also possible to automate a company, this is the case of Drop Shipping. Drop Shipping is when you sell products that you don’t have in stock and that are sent directly from the supplier to the customers. Amazon offers this type of service too, you can put in their catalogs products that you sell and entrust to Amazon for the stock’s management, sending and returns of products. I wrote an article on Amazon’s drop shipping, here.

There is also the case of muses that explains Tim Ferriss in his book « 4 hours workweek ».

Delegate

Focus on your strengths and delegate the rest. Create a list of tasks that you want to delegate with instructions. Then gives these tasks to a team by assigning each type of task to a specialist.

Duplicate

There is no point in reinventing the wheel. You can duplicate the recipes of your mentors success and use that in your own company.

Recycle

A job that you did can be reused in a different form. For example, articles from a blog can be used to make a book, a podcast or a video.

4 actions to earn more

Determine your goal and strategy

Determine your goal, your process to reach it and the strategy to put in place. Here are some examples of strategies for developing your wealth :

  • Replace your salary with real estate income and start your own company.

  • Keep your work as employee and invest a maximum on stock market to create passive income.

  • Create a company to have a complementary income like a blog, a podcast or a Youtube channel.

  • Buy a piece of land and build several apartments (condos).

  • Etc.

Optimize your management to spend less money

  • Analyse the things you have to pay to eliminate waste : unnecessary subscription, insurance too expensive, etc.

  • Print your bank statement and analyze it

  • Seeking a way to achieve the same result by spending less : compare, buy cheaper, negotiate to save money for the things you really need.

  • Optimize your taxation by reducing your taxes.

Recycle your skills and your work

You can work on something once and get paid several times. You can create a seminar, keep 3 children instead of 1, you walk 5 dogs instead of 1, etc.

You can also use a job you have already done to create complementary income. Foe example, if you like to take picture, you can put them in stock photos on internet.

Duplicate the processes known to create wealth

  • Pay yourself first

  • Make money work for you by saving at least 10% of your income to invest them.

  • Invest in yourself with training to learn new skills

Here are the options you can use to create a company that serves your life (and not your life serving your company). With internet it’s easier to use these levers with a blog, podcast or a Youtube channel by creating content.

Everyone wants to work more efficiently to save time and make more money. There are 2 books to learn how to do this and I’m going to do a synthesis of 2. Maybe you already know theses 2 books, it’s « 4 Hours Workweek  » by Tim Ferriss  and « The One Minute Millionaire » by Mark Victor and Robert Allen.

Before you start, it’s important that you know that there is a special relationship between time and money. The idea is to better manage your time in your day to make your money work for you and make more money. There are several actions to put in place to do this and these actions based on 3 laws :

  • Leverage – Leverage gives you the speed to reach your goals faster. With a lever, you can control several elements. There are 5 types of leverage in 5 forms. We’ll see this in detail.

  • Pareto’s law.

  • Parkinson’s law

Let’s start with the leverage and its different points of support. There is a very interesting quote from Archimedes :

« Give me a place to stand, and a lever long enough and I will move the world »

Leverage allows you to reach your financial goals more easily and quickly. The higher the fulcrum is, the higher you can go up and far.

Money from others

Very useful in the real estate because the money of the banks and the tenant can allow you to have an additional income and a heritage. This heritage is largely financed by the money of others.

Skills of others

By meeting professionals who have more experience than you and mentors on your professional field, you can follow their examples. This allow you to access years of knowledge in a very short time, and avoid making mistakes that can cost you a lot of money and waste a lot of time.

Ideas of others

Find a partner who is willing to share ideas. For example to create your business instead of reinventing the wheel, you can join a franchise network to use and implement a business model that has been proven.

Time of others

Use the skills of someone who has more experience than you, by this way you can save. Delegate tasks.

Work of others

Support a team that is capable to manage things for you without you need to give last minutes instructions. Create a team with a list of instructions so that they are as autonomous as possible.

Mentors

Mentors are an incredible source of information. Select the people who inspire you from the people who have succeeded in the field you want to master.

Team

It’s known to many we can accomplish more than alone. A team makes it possible to work in synergy and to find solutions more quickly. Find people who have the same values as you and who have complementary skills.

One of the best example of a successful team is the team Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs who together created Apple. Steve Wozniak is a computer genius, he created the first Apple computer, the Apple 1 and he largely created the Apple 2 that made the success of Apple. Steve Wozniak is a very nice person but at the time, he didn’t have the skills to sell these computers. Steve Jobs was a sales genius but he didn’t have the skills to create these computers.

Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs separately have never been able to create something as impressive as Apple, the association of these 2 people who shared the same values and the desire to offer people computers easier to use have marked the history of computer with Apple.

Networks

The more professional relationships you have, the greater the leverage will be. Grow your network in the areas where you want to share and work.

Skills and tools

Having essential tools to reach the goal and mastering the operation of theses tools increase success. Skills to master are the power of persuasion, rhetoric and humor.

Systems

Using a good system increases the chances of success. To make money, there are millions of systems (there are so many on internet). The perfect system has 5 characteristics :

  1. No need to liquidity

  2. No risk or little

  3. Require no time

  4. Require no management

  5. Require little effort

The truth is that is very, very, very difficult to find an investment system that has these 5 characteristics, but you have to try to get as close as possible to work less and earn more money.

Pareto’s law

Parkinson’s law or the 20/80’s law discovered by the economist and sociologist Vilfredo Pareto. This principle explains that 20% of the countries of the world share 80% of the wealth and that within these countries 20% of the people share 80% of the wealth. Here is the basis of this principle : « 80% of effects come from 20% of the causes », which means that a minimum of causes create a maximum of effects. Always try to identify in your actions or in your company, the 20% of actions which bring 80% of results.

Parkinson’s law

Parkinson’s law discovered by historian and essayist Cyril Northcote Parkinson. This principle explain that the work extends so as to occupy the time available for the completion of a task. For example, if you put 2 hours to do a task that can be done in 1 hour, you still go for 2 hours. To have more time, we must force ourselves to have less. The basis of this principle is to do a task at 50% or 75% of the recommended time to do it.

In this section, we saw leverage, Pareto’s law and Parkinson’s law. In the 2nd part, we’ll see the 5 actions to be effective and the 4 actions to make more money.
