Here are some tips to improve your situation if you want to have an internet company or you already have an internet company. These principles are basically intended for infopreneurs, it means selling information products (ebook and online training) but over time all companies should use these principles to boost their reputations.

In an internet company, there are 3 pillars : traffic, authority and relation.

Traffic

This is the number of people who visit your website and your entire ecosystem (social media – instagram, youtube, facebook, snapchat, twitter, etc.).

Authorities

This is the way your audience sees you as an expert. You can be an excellent expert and not know how to communicate, so your audience sees your expertise at a level below your actual expertise. And it can also have the opposite situation where your audience sees your expertise at a level higher than your real expertise. In this case, you’re a crook !

Relation

This is the level where your audience appreciates you as a human being rather than a company.

Pillars check

What is interesting to do is to note where you think you are in the 3 pillars (traffic, authority and relation) from 1 to 10. « 1 » is the person who has just started and « 10 », is the person who is one of the best infopreneurs in the world like Gary Vaynerchuk  or Casey Neistat .

Don’t hesitate to ask people you know to have a more objective point of view. The ideal is a close friend who is really interested in your company and who understands what you’re doing. Ask this friend : « What rating would you give me between 1 and 10 ? Go ahead, be frank, you don’t need to spare my ego ! ». With an outside eye, it will help you find the problem.

It’s possible that you have a huge traffic on your website but if people don’t perceive you as an expert who has enough experience to help them and they don’t like you (they perceive you more like a salesman as a human being), they will not buy your products and services.

Conversion rate

This concerns the conversion rate between your traffic and the people who sign up for your email list. People who sign up for your email list are people who are really interested in what you’re doing and who want receive the free gift you are offering (ebook or exclusive video). People who subscribe to your email list have given you permission to contact them through their email knowing they can unsubscribe at any time.

What it interesting to do is to note where you think to be in your conversion rate from 1 to 10 ? For example, when there are 100 people visiting your website, how many are subscribed to your email list ? If you rate is 0, you’re not offering any interesting gifts or you’re not making a call to action for your email list. In these cases, you have to work on it to offer a better free gift or tell people that they can sign up for your email list.

We must know that today, email remains the most effective way to contact people and it will remain so for a long time. Attention, that doesn’t mean that when you send an email thanking for the loyalty of your subscribers or a promotional email for a product/service, you shouldn’t also talk about that in your ecosystem (social media) with a video, a picture, a post on different platforms.

It’s important to know that if you’re doing content marketing and your company is based on the free content you create, you need at least a 5% conversion rate. If you do below that, you have work to do to improve your conversion rate.

It’s possible that you don’t have a product or service to sell or like me at the beginning, I sold a product but there are only 5 people who bought it. In this case, you can do a survey with the people who are on your email list to find out what is the problem they would like to settle as quickly as possible. With this method, you’ll soon be able to create a profitable product because you solve the main problem of you audience. Attention, it’s necessary that you have 1000 people subscribed on your email list to make this survey.

Coaching

This is one of the simplest ways you can make money. It doesn’t matter if you have more than 1000 people on your email list. When we start an internet company, it’s the easiest thing to do. You offer your skills as a service to your audience. With a small audience, a good authority and a good relation, you’ll have people who will be interested to work with you by doing coaching sessions on Skype, for example.

Ebook

If you’re a person who likes to write (like me), you can create an ebook that you can sell between USD 17.- and 27.- to start earning some money.

Action

We could talk about this for hours because every situation is different. I don’t know your situation but by following these advices, you will be able to improve your company’s situation, so ACTION.

I watched an Olivier Roland’s video  and I learned good stuff.

I noticed that there is an approach to selling a service or product, especially used by coaches, which is based on the principle that « everyone is different ». Say like that, it’s hard not to agree with this principle because everyone is unique and everyone has their own characteristics.

When a person uses this philosophical principle, it’s easy to see his/her way of thinking and his/her actions. As many coaches use this principle, they try to set up a unique service for each person and each person evolves at his/her own pace.

It’s not a problem to use this principle but there are disadvantages. These people find no interest in methods that work for most people. For example, the McDonald’s method or school systems work in a universal way.

You have to realize that as a human being, there is a lot of common ground between us. There is 1% difference in our DNA compared to the DNA of a chimpanzee. So you see that the difference in genetics between several human beings is extremely ridiculous.

2 human beings coming from distant countries like a person from Botswana and a person from Norway have much more genetically in common than between a human being and a chimpanzee. All human beings all have a head, a body, hands, feet and we all have the ability to speak a language. It’s true that the language is different because it comes from culture but at the base, we all have the programming necessary to learn it.

When we understand that, we can see that there is a huge part of things that human beings have in common and that comes from DNA. DNA is a material like a hardware (computer, smartphone) and culture is like a software. Culture is the element that allows us to have different behaviors.

In the book « Influence : Science and Practice » by Robert Cialdini , he shows us several influencing factors that make people more likely to believe you, to listen to you when you ask them to do something. These factors are universal among all cultures. Cultures will just change the importance of certain things over others compared to other cultures.

Be careful not to let yourself be trapped in this principle. Yes, we’re all unique because we need to have things that correspond only to us. But there are methods that work for 99% of people. You can use a method that works for 99% of people and then customized products or services for people who want it.

You can meet coaches who use 100% this principle that everyone is unique and he often asks you the question : « Wait, you communicate to thousands of prospects and clients, how do you can do because each person is unique, etc ».

These coaches are right and wrong at the same time. It’s obvious that a customized product or a customized service so more effective, but if you can create a standard product or standard service, you can help 100 000 times more people.

For me, it’s necessary to use the 2 principles. You make a standard product or standard service and you make a customized product or a customized service for the people who ask it. With these 2 principles combined, you can really grow your business to build a legacy.

Organize

Managing your schedule helps limit stress and to do that, here’s what you can do :

  • Prevent an additional 10 to 20 minutes on your travel times.

  • Make a list of priority tasks to do and not to do.

  • Identify bad habits, tasks to eliminate and tasks to delegate.

  • Automatize a maximum of tasks.

  • Focus on taks that immediately bring visible results

  • Avoid to scatter you.

  • Stop these time consuming habits like reading your emails as soon as they arrive of watching your smartphone as soon as there is a notification. Tamagochi  is a toy, not a lifestyle.

  • Do things in their time. Each task, even minimum, must be completed before moving on the next one. This method allows you to improve your concentration and the satisfaction of having completed a task is very motivating.

  • Pause during the day and cultivate your patience. In a situation where you have to wait, take the time to relax instead of sighing and complaining. For example in a queue for a counter, use that : Wait = relax and breathe deeply. Concentrate on yourself in a positive way and on the present moment.

Communicate

  • Stress is often born from the fact that we don’t know what our interlocutors expect from us. We can’t read people’s minds, so don’t hesitate to ask clearly what people expect of you. Dare to ask questions and create a direct communication. Banish your ego and think that you aren’t absolutely right. You can also avoid sensitive topics.

  • Say « no ». If you can’t render a service someone asks you because you have no time or no resources or you don’t want to take additional responsibilities, then explain that to your interlocutor. Your interlocutors will understand the situation and you will find an arrangement. It’s better to say « no » from the start than to force yourself to keep your commitments. With this attitude, you will avoid being overwhelmed.

  • Avoid the trigger elements of stress. Limit your contact with people who stress you. Be aware of your environment and control that. For example, use an alternative road to avoid traffic jams. Turn off TV to avoid listening to information that makes you anxious. If you did the analysis of 20% of sources that bring you 80% your stress, you know the people that you must see the minimum or eliminate them from your contacts.

  • Adjust yourself by being willing to compromise. Be assertive by adapting your requirements and avoiding perfectionism.

  • Reframe conflicts by analyzing the problem in a positive way. Look at good things and find benefits of the situation. Focus on positive elements.

  • Accept the trigger of stress and admit that you can’t control everything.

  • Looking for opportunities to improve yourself. Concentrate on what this stressful situation can teach you. Follow the principle of this quote : « What doesn’t kill you , make you stronger » and ask yourself these questions : « How can I get better with this experience ? What did I learn ? ».

  • Forgive. Accept that others make mistakes (because you also make mistakes) and try to evacuate any feeling of anger. When you free yourself from all this negative energy, it’s easy to resume your projects.

In summary « The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another » as William James said.

I often meet entrepreneurs who do their own accounting and they say it’s a nightmare. Here are the 2 reasons why I advise them to stop :

  1. Accounting requires a lot of time.

  2. It’s extremely easy to make a mistake. Even certified public accountants make mistakes. The problem when there is an error in your accounting is that all the numbers are wrong. And when all the numbers are wrong, you tax return is false and when your tax return is false, you are in a long-term nightmare.

It’s possible to find a good accountant for around $1 200 a year when you start a company. It’s always better to pay that than to be in a financial nightmare for 5 years because of a mistake in your tax return.

Technique

What’s cool is that with WordPress and its free plugins and themes, it’s easy to install and manage a blog / website. There are also other platforms that allow you to do the same thing.

On the other hand, when there is a major problem that exceeds your skills, it can be negative for your company. For example,your blog / website no longer responds. If you don’t know how to do, you can spend 2-3 days trying to understand the problem and it’s been 2-3 days since your audience no longer has access to your blog / website.

At that moment, you need an IT provider. This is not a person you will hire as an employee but it’s a person to whom you can entrust all the technical tasks that you don’t knew how to do.

Yes, it will cost money but ask yourself this question : « Is it better to spend 2-3 says repairing your blog / website is down or pay a IT provider who repairs it in 1 hour ? ».

I advise you to find a IT provider quickly when you start making money with your company before having a major problem. Maybe someone around you knows a good IT provider or maybe you need to find one on Upwork. Test this IT provider with a small task to find out if her is competent or not.

It’s something to delegate but not as fast as the technique. At the beginning, it’s important to do customer support yourself to be in direct contact with the audience to see the problems in services or products, etc. But that doesn’t mean that customer support is the best added value task that the company’s founder can do.

With customer support, you will quickly see that there are often the same questions that are asked. To eliminate much of the customer support is to make a FAQ. A FAQ is the list of questions most frequently asked with a reply.

For other questions that are a little more complex that are are common, you can do a procedure to explain to the people who take care of your customer service how to solve the problem. And you can ask them to inform you when a question is frequently asked to have a permanent feedback. This allow you to stay in touch with reality.

Maybe someone around you knows a good customer support provider or maybe you need to find one on Upwork. Test this customer service provider with a small task to find out if her is competent or not.

Social media

Since you have a blog or a website, you have an audience. This audience sends you messages when you create content. This is the same principle as for customer support, it’s important at the beginning that you answer the messages yourself to discover your audience. You will know the fears and the hopes of your audience. It’s important that you learn how to communicate with your audience.

To find out what things to delegate, you need to be aware of seeing where you bring the most added value to your company as a founder, it’s about innovation, strategy and setting up processes. This allows you to work on your company and not work in your company.

It’s important to know the difference between working on your company and working in your company (being a slave to your company).

I told you there was a way to find IT provider, customer service provider and social media provider on internet. The best known platform for finding freelancers or outsourcing is Upwork . You will find providers from several different countries. Always test a provider with a small task that doesn’t have a huge impact on your company to make the selection.

I have just enrolled in a Data Science course on Udemy  and I learned good stuff.

Our bar chart has colors by region but imagines that this bar chart is on a wall of an open space or in a report.

With labels, we can make this bar chart more clear, easier to understand.

In this bar chart, there are all necessary information: representative’s names, regions where representatives make sales and total sales for each representative in Swiss francs.

But, there is a problem. For example, if you ask for someone to say how many sales made Bill. This person must find Bill and see on the vertical axis to the left the value. Here we can see, it’s 1750.

But if we take the James case, we see that it’s between 1000 and 1500. James is far from the vertical axis and it’s difficult to say the true value.

That’s means, all people need to make effort to extract the bar chart’s information.

This it should not be the case because a Data Scientist searches always the best ways to communicate the information. This process is to help people to understand and extract the information in the easiest way.

Start with labels.

« Labels » button allows you to add text information in your bar chart.

You will add a label with the SUM(TotalSales) information

To do this, you click on SUM(TotalSales) and press and maintain the key Ctrl or Command on your keyboard and drag and drop SUM(TotalSales) on « Label ».

Now you can see the total sales value at the top of each bar.

The bar chart is easier to read because there is the total value of sales for each representative.

it’s time to add more information using the labels.

Use the « Rep » information. Click on « Rep », press and hold « Ctrl » key or Command key on your keyboard and drag and drop « Rep » to « Label ».

Now you can read the representatives names at the top of the bars.

You can also add the region. I’ll show you another way to add « Region » in « Labels ». Click « Region » in « Dimensions » and drag and drop « Region » on « Labels ».

But it’s redundant because you can read the representatives names below and the regions at the top of the bar chart.

And each region has its own color. As it’s redundant, we remove « Rep » and « Region » from « Labels » by dragging and dropping out.

It’s better, it remains only SUM(TotalSales).

Let’s go to the next level, we will publish our labels.

To do this, do a right-click on « Labels » and click on « … » button.

It allows you to have your own text. For example write « Sales : » and click on « OK » button.

Now you can see that your text appears at the top of the bars.

Well, click on « Labels » and click on « … » button.

Delete the text « Sale : »and click on « OK » button.

We will see now how to format your bar chart. This is the last step before your bar chart is in production.

You will change the labels size. Click on « Labels » and click on « Font »

Select « 12 » and bold.

Oh, you can do the same thing by clicking on « … » button

You have the possibility to change the color but we will keep the color black

Now you’re going to change the label type. Right-click on SUM(TotalSales) and click on « Format… ».

In fact the labels have their own format and you can change that by clicking on « Label » but all the other thing on Tableau give their format options make a right-click on it.

So when you click on « Format », you’ll see 2 tabs : « Axis » and « Pane ».

Select the tab « Pane » because that’s where the labels of our bar chart.

By clicking on « Alignement », you can change the text’s direction of the labels.

But what you can’t do with the « Labels » button is to change the digital type.

Return on the tab « Pane », we’ll change the numbers in currencies. Click « Numbers » and select « Currency(custom) ». You can also change the currency type in the « Prefix/suffix ».

To simplify, you delete 2 decimals in « Decimal Places ».

As you can see on my bar chart, the SUM(TotalSales) is vertical at the top of each bar. To change the direction of the label text, click « Alignement » in the « Pane » tab.

But there is a problem. Some bars don’t have SUM(TotalSales). To fix this, right-click on each bar and select « Mark Label » and « Alwlays Show ».

Now, the bar chart is more understandable.

Let’s put the units in thousands. Click on « Numbers » => « Currency(custom) » => « Units » => « Thousands (K) ».

Add a decimal in « Decimal Places ».

That’s better, we can see Swiss francs sales for each sales representative.

Look, there’s something you need to know You can’t change the size of the text in the tab « Pane ».

If you click on « Font » and change the size, it will not change anything on your bar chart.

This is because the font size in the « Label » button dominates the font that is in the tab « Pane ».

Ok, we changed the labels format. Now, let’s change the axes format.

To do this, right-click on the vertical axis and select « Format ».

Click on the « Axis » tab and change the text size with « Font » to 12.

Then, right-click on the horizontal axis. Selects « Format ».

And in the « Header » tab, you change the text size with « Font » to 12.

Oooh, do you see ? Mathiew is cut off. To arrange this, enlarge the bar chart by clicking and dragging on the right.

Right-click on « Central » in the top axis and select « Format ».

And changes the text’s size with « Font » to 12 and bold.

Now, look at the top of the bar chart. The « Region/Rep » line is useless because we know that Central, East and West are the regions and the representatives names are at the bottom of the bar chart.

To change it, right-click on « Region/Rep » and select « Hide Field Label for Columns ».

if you want to improve the title « TotalSales » by adding a space, right-click on the vertical axis and select « Edit axis ».

In the « General » tab, add a space in the title and click « OK ».

Let’s do one more thing. We’re going to put all the « Total Sales » in Swiss francs. Make a right-click on the vertical axis and select « Format ».

Click on tab « Axis » => « Numbers » => « Currency(custom) ».

In « Decimal Places », you put « 0 ». In « Units », you put « Thousand(K) ». In « Prefix/Suffix », you put « CHF ».

Well, you did a good job. Now you know how to change the format of the charts in Tableau.

In the last article, we created our calculated field « TotalSales » that you can see in «Measure » zone.

In Tableau, the calculated field is very used (almost every time) because in most case the data don’t give the value you want to show.

The calculated field « TotalSales » is a simple example to make you understand how it works but know that you can do things more complex. I’ll show you that later.

In this article, I’ll show you how to manipulate colors because it’s an important element to communicate. With colors, people will understand more quickly what you want to explain to them.

Imagine that you have to show this bar chart to the manager who handles the bonuses. By putting a little color, a little art, you could improve the reading of this bar chart.

To use colors, click on this button.

You can change the color with the basic colors.

Or you can have more colors by clicking here.

If you have a picture in the background, you have the possibility to change the opacity to have a transparent effect of colors.

You can add a border, change the border’s color, etc.

But what would be nice to do is to have bars with different colors.

To start, take « Rep » and move it on « Colors ».

With this, there is a unique color for each representative.

There is also another method to do that. Instead of taking « Rep » and moving it to « Color », you can click « Rep » here.

If you move it to « Colors », you’ll break everything because « Rep » will no longer be in the « Columns » zone.

To avoid this, press Ctrl or Command on your keyboard and click « Rep » to make appear the sign « + ». Now that you made a copy of « Rep », move it to « Colors ». It’s like making a copy/paste from « Rep » to « Colors ».

With this method, « Rep » is always in the « Columns » zone. This is a method that is very practical when there are many dimensions.

As you can see, there are several choices of palettes.

You can test the « color blind » palette which is very useful for color blind people. To select this palette, click « Assign Palette » and « Apply ».

When a palette has fewer colors than representatives, you will have a message saying that some colors will be duplicated. But this is not a problem because there are names below the bars.

Now we want to see something else with our bar chart. Press “Ctrl” or “Command” on your keyboard and click on SUM(TotalSales) to display the « + » sign. Then move SUM(TotalSales) to « Colors » to replace « Rep ».

As you can see SUM(TotalSales) has different colors. The colors are on a continuous basis which means that the more sales there are, the darker the color.

For our case, this is not useful because the size of the bars represents the sales number but for other situations, this is useful.

The problem now is that there are duplicate colors and because of this, the Manager could misinterpret the results. An alternative approach would be to ensure that the Manager understands the results.

The solution is to take « Region » (by pressing “Ctrl” or “Command” on your keyboard) and move it to « Colors ».

You can also take « Region » (with “Ctrl” or “Command”) and move it to SUM(TotalSales) to replace SUM(TotalSales).

With that, the bars are colored by region.

That way, you can clearly see the 3 regions through colors that are unique to each region and you can see the total sales per representatives with the size of the bar.

This is a small example so that you can understand the basics to manipulate colors in Tableau. There are still more complex techniques to manage the colors that I will show you later.

Plays with the colors so you can fully understand how it works. You could find your favorite palette and find your style. Have fun.

It’s true that learn from your mistakes is a good method to improve yourself but you can do a huge mistake by doing this. Let me explain to you, the huge mistake is to only learn from your own mistakes. Look the world, we’re billions and there are billions of people who lives before us. As everyone makes mistakes, learning from mistakes of others is also a good strategy.

Look mistakes from people who are in the domain where you want progress allow you to save time and money. I think we know it but we forget to do it quickly. It’s important to have a strategy to learn from mistakes of others to progress.

I tell you the truth, I also made this mistake several times. Sometimes I noticed that I had a talent and I was alone in solo thinking that I was smart enough to succeed. I thought I didn’t need professors, books, etc. It’s an ego trip, it’s the best method to waste time and almost guarantee failure. Yes, I know there are exceptions, some people happen to be successful in being solitary wolves but it’s clear that they lose a lot of time.

No matter where you want to succeed, there is a golden rule. You need master the basics ! Once you master the basics, you can be creative but not before.

You can try to be creative before master the basics and in 90 % of the cases you’ll fail, it’s true. Look at people who are successful, people who are creative, they were all newbies and they all learned the basics.

Example

Looks at the creative chefs who have restaurants with 3 stars in the Michelin guide. Do you think at the first day in kitchen, they said to themselves : « Go, I make a crazy recipe ? ». No, they learned to cook rice, pasta and they had to learn the basics like everyone else.

There is a company very creative that is Cirque Du Soleil  that reinvented the show. You notice that there is a lot of circus inspiration and other domains. It looks very similar to fusion restaurants. You know this concept where you take the best recipes from 2 countries and you make a mix of 2 to make a menu.

Learn form mistakes of others

The simplest method is to read the biography from people who are successful in the field where you evolve. You’ll learn a lot of things, you’ll see that they strarted from nothing and sometimes they made incredible mistakes. Reading biographies helps you avoid making these mistakes.

Second

Be in touch with people who are successful in your field. Don’t absolutely look for people who are at the level where you would like to be, communicate with people who are better than you. Ask them what are the classic mistakes that beginners make.

Put in place a stratregy to know mistakes of others and solutions they used to move forward. You’ll see, this will save you from unnecessary stress.

Attention is a thing to do in addition to attend trainings, see tutorials in video,etc.

What I mean is not be a lone wolf. Connect you, inform you, be curious, attends trainings and find mistakes that you must not make before you make them.
