Often people ask themselves this question to start a company on internet: “What is the difference between a website and a blog ?”.

The answer is that there is no difference because a blog is a website. To be more precise, a blog is a type of website because there are websites that aren’t blogs. A blog is a type of website in which the content is published by antichronological order (it means that the last published article is displayed first). It’s possible to have a static home page for blogs, this is an option.

In the case of e-commerce, a blog can be a complementary website to attract qualified prospects. I take the example of fitness. You have a company that sells fitness accessories (weightlifting belt, squat knee sleeves, etc). You create a website to sell your products with Prestashop , Shopify , Magento . By creating another blog type website, you share content that will interest your potential clients, fitness fans.

On the blog, you share articles like: “Protect you back with these 4 strength coach secrets” or “7 exercises to build your strength and power foundation” or “How much protein, fat and carbs should you eat to lose weight”. Topics that interest people who do fitness. You have to publish content to attract qualified prospects, it means, qualified prospects who are likely to buy your products.

It gives a huge advantage compared to your competitors who don’t do that.

Here is a concrete example. Bonnegueule is basically a blog about French men’s fashion. But the Bonnegueule’s founders did more than what infopreneurs usually do (sell online training and ebooks) They created their own clothing brand in collaboration with fashion designers. Since 2014, they have 3 physical stores in France.

What is innovative with Bonnegueule is that on the products sheet of clothes, there is the complete details of the materials used, tips to be elegant with the clothe, how to associate this clothe with others, tips for good maintenance of the clothe and the fashion designers pictures.

With all this people see Bonnegueule as advisers and not sellers, even if they sell products. And that makes a huge difference in the relation with clients.

It’s also smart to create multiple types of content (text, video, audio) on other platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, Facebook or Soundcloud to attract other qualified prospects to other locations.

The trick is that you have to have more people who want to buy your product than products available. This trick is also valid for service.

This trick is that you have to develop your audience to make sure there are so many people who know you that it’s not possible for everyone to buy your products/services. Here is an example.

Imagine that you have a bakery. As there are several bakeries in the neighborhood, your turnover is limited because of the local radius. People don’t go kilometers (miles) to go to bakery, usually they go tho the bakery closest to home.

There is something to boost your audience/clients through the internet. It’s to develop your bakery’s presence on internet with a blog, a podcast or a YouTube channel. With a YouTube channel, you can show what you do every day with vlogs. You make a video when you get up at 4 in the morning to make breads and cakes, which means that you film the process (knead the dough, the oven, etc.). All these videos, you can publish them on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and other video support.

To start, you will publish these videos to your local clientele, then to a national level and then to an international level. This is an important first step but it can be quickly copied. To differentiate yourself from other bakeries, it’s necessary that you have an extremely good cake with a secret recipe. You can make videos of this cake with a secret recipe but you don’t show the whole process, all the ingredients. It’s a cake with a secret recipe like Cola-Cola.

Tell a story about this secret recipe to make it mysterious. It must be a true story like : « It’s a recipe from my mother’s grandmother » or « It’s a recipe I accidentally created ». With this story, this storytelling, people of the neighborhood will know you better and you’ll become a local celebrity. And what’s interesting is that there will be people from other cities coming to your bakery because you’re the baker who has this great YouTube channel.

With a website, you can sell your breads ans cakes online in other cities. Because of your presence on internet, local newspapers will do an article about you because there is buzz. And you can display these articles in your bakery in a very visible place so that all clients can see them. All this will boost word of mouth.

After a while, you will not be able to satisfy the request and it’s at this moment where you have to ask yourself these 2 question :

  • Open another bakery. You will work more, earn more money and recognition.

  • Increase prices. You limit your time for the quality of life or the quality of your products because you’re an artisan.

In London, there is this Japanese restaurant, The Araki , which has 3 stars in the Michelin guide. There is a waiting list of several months to eat there. The Araki has one menu only of £300 and only 10 seats. It’s really interesting to read their « Booking Policy » .

I know that this can’t be applied in all professional fields but it gives you the possibility to have more clients.

When Your Internet Company Is Not Working

Here are some tips to improve your situation if you want to have an internet company or you already have an internet company. These principles are basically intended for infopreneurs, it means selling information products (ebook and online training) but over time all companies should use these principles to boost their reputations.

In an internet company, there are 3 pillars : traffic, authority and relation.

Traffic

This is the number of people who visit your website and your entire ecosystem (social media – instagram, youtube, facebook, snapchat, twitter, etc.).

Authorities

This is the way your audience sees you as an expert. You can be an excellent expert and not know how to communicate, so your audience sees your expertise at a level below your actual expertise. And it can also have the opposite situation where your audience sees your expertise at a level higher than your real expertise. In this case, you’re a crook !

Relation

This is the level where your audience appreciates you as a human being rather than a company.

What is interesting to do is to note where you think you are in the 3 pillars (traffic, authority and relation) from 1 to 10. « 1 » is the person who has just started and « 10 », is the person who is one of the best infopreneurs in the world like Gary Vaynerchuk  or Casey Neistat .

Don’t hesitate to ask people you know to have a more objective point of view. The ideal is a close friend who is really interested in your company and who understands what you’re doing. Ask this friend : « What rating would you give me between 1 and 10 ? Go ahead, be frank, you don’t need to spare my ego ! ». With an outside eye, it will help you find the problem.

It’s possible that you have a huge traffic on your website but if people don’t perceive you as an expert who has enough experience to help them and they don’t like you (they perceive you more like a salesman as a human being), they will not buy your products and services.

Conversion rate

This concerns the conversion rate between your traffic and the people who sign up for your email list. People who sign up for your email list are people who are really interested in what you’re doing and who want receive the free gift you are offering (ebook or exclusive video). People who subscribe to your email list have given you permission to contact them through their email knowing they can unsubscribe at any time.

What it interesting to do is to note where you think to be in your conversion rate from 1 to 10 ? For example, when there are 100 people visiting your website, how many are subscribed to your email list ? If you rate is 0, you’re not offering any interesting gifts or you’re not making a call to action for your email list. In these cases, you have to work on it to offer a better free gift or tell people that they can sign up for your email list.

We must know that today, email remains the most effective way to contact people and it will remain so for a long time. Attention, that doesn’t mean that when you send an email thanking for the loyalty of your subscribers or a promotional email for a product/service, you shouldn’t also talk about that in your ecosystem (social media) with a video, a picture, a post on different platforms.

It’s important to know that if you’re doing content marketing and your company is based on the free content you create, you need at least a 5% conversion rate. If you do below that, you have work to do to improve your conversion rate.

It’s possible that you don’t have a product or service to sell or like me at the beginning, I sold a product but there are only 5 people who bought it. In this case, you can do a survey with the people who are on your email list to find out what is the problem they would like to settle as quickly as possible. With this method, you’ll soon be able to create a profitable product because you solve the main problem of you audience. Attention, it’s necessary that you have 1000 people subscribed on your email list to make this survey.

This is one of the simplest ways you can make money. It doesn’t matter if you have more than 1000 people on your email list. When we start an internet company, it’s the easiest thing to do. You offer your skills as a service to your audience. With a small audience, a good authority and a good relation, you’ll have people who will be interested to work with you by doing coaching sessions on Skype, for example.

If you’re a person who likes to write (like me), you can create an ebook that you can sell between USD 17.- and 27.- to start earning some money.

Action

I like to share the techniques, tactics and methods that I tested and worked for me and for others. As an athlete, I like to see my potential’s extent, I like to win and I like to see people around me win. It’s always frustrating to see someone who has a talent and isn’t fighting to realize their dream.

Often when I discover something in a book or someone shows me a technique that I test and that works, I want to say to the world « Look this technique works, try it right now ». That’s why I created my blog.

Challenges

I watched a The Family‘s video  (I wrote an article about it Part 1 , Part 2 and Part 3). I decided to publish 5 articles per week for several reasons :

As an athlete, I like to push my limits. Posting 5 articles per week has forced me to find themes that fascinate me so I can enjoy learning new things and writing articles about it. Every day, I’m looking for new things. There are articles I write and don’t published because I realize that it doesn’t fit my vision.

At the beginning of my blog, you can see that I write articles to introduce some bodybuilders and I stopped doing that because I decided not to talk about athletes using steroids. With challenges, it allows me to refine the vision of my blog and my failures are part of the learning process.

From, 2014 to 2015, I published 1-2 articles per week. Toward the end of 2015, I watched a video about a 30-day challenge. After watching this video, I decided to write 5 articles a week for 30 days and after published 1-2 articles a week. During the 30 day challenge, it was difficult for me to write articles (find subjects and find the time to write texts) but my blog’s traffic seriously increased. When I took the rhythm of 1-2 articles a week, I felt less stressed because I had less pressure but my blog’s traffic of my blog had decreased.

I started to get frustrated because one of the important things for a blog is to have traffic. So, I started again this challenge of 5 articles per week during 30 days by writing only on topics where I have fun. My blog’s traffic increased like the first time. Frankly, it’s cool because I know that with this frequency, I can reach more people. And that allows me to develop my business. Yes, it’s possible to bring value to the world by bringing value to yourself, thus making money. Both are compatible.

Today, I have prospects and clients coming from my blog. People read my articles, it’s free and then they send me emails or messages with social media to find out if I can solve one of their problem.

Learn

With this frequency of publication, 5 articles per week, it allows me to accelerate my learning curve. You can see the difference of writing between my first articles and my last articles. I improved my writing style. All that, it took me a long time and I know that I have a lot of things to improve. And I also learned that success is something that builds little by little. There is no success in 3 months or 1 year. Success is a thing in the long run. You learn to make the difference between lies and truths to have a healthy life in all areas.

For 1-2 years, you can see I’m learning to make videos on Instagram and Snapchat. I make 5 videos a week. Since about 6 months, I make an audio file (podcast) on my old exercise articles. In this audio file, I read the article so that you can have the information in a passive way. You can listen to my audio file while driving, working instead of listening to music. Making videos and podcasts are things I learn to do for my blog.

Have fun

Sharing content frequently no matter the format, text, audio, video, it’s something that I do with fun. People are asking me how do I keep doing this for years. The answer is that I have fun when I do that. It’s like when I train or dance Cuban salsa. When I do that, I have fun and if I can learn something to improve myself, I do it.

I know there are people who create content to make money quickly but it doesn’t happen that way. You need to do this for 3-5 years for free to build your reputation and then you can afford to make money. That’s why it’s important to have fun when you do that because the difficulties come, you see them from a different angle. There is no cheat code so have fun.

Be Really Constant

Sometimes I subscribe to a blog or a Youtube’s channel because I find the content is interesting and bring me value. But, I don’t know why, the creator of the blog or the Youtube’s channel publishes content once a month. It’s frustrating because this creator has a talent but he’s not constant.

Being constant means doing something regularly. More precisely, it’s to do something that works regularly.

What I’ve noticed with people who have a website and use social media to promote their website is that they find something that works, that attract trafic and that’s all. They do this think that works once and they’re happy.

That is not how theses people are going to be successful over the long term. When you find something that works and attract trafic to your website, you have to do it several times. You need to be an expert in this thing that works to perfect it and use it frequently

It’s not a stroke of luck

For example, you do a fighting sport. During a fight, you find a technique that works. What do you think : « Wow this technique worked, but I’m going to stop using it. I will not use this technique all my life » or « Wow, this technique worked. I will use it in each fight and perfect it to win the most fight possible all my life » ?

I think you’re like me, you want to win the most fight possible all your life but we’re a lot not to do that. I reassure you, before I was like that. When I found something that worked, everybody said : « Bravo » but in my heart I felt it was a stroke of luck and I couldn’t do it again. It was a huge mistake.

There is a really cool tool to see the number of views and subscribers of some social media (Youtube, Twitch, Instagram, Twitter). If you want to do analyzes, social blade  is interesting for that.

I’ll take the example of Olivier Roland’s Youtube channel. Olivier Roland have a little more than 136,000 subscribers. When he publish a video, he has around 5 %-10 % views compared to his subscribers number (6,800 views-13,600 views).

There are many Youtubers who have more subscribers than Olivier Roland. And when they publish a video, there are 50 %-100 % view compared to their subscribers number. Beware, there 50 %-100 % views weren’t only made by subscribers. Generally on Youtube there are 40 % of views that were by subscribers.

You know that there are Youtubers with more subscribers than Olivier Roland and they make more views than Olivier Roland each time they publish a video. And these Youtubers make fewer views per month than Olivier Roland. Olivier Roland has about 450,000 views – 500,000 views.

There are Youtubers who have 150,000 – 200,000 subscribers and who easily have 50,000 views – 100,000 views when they publish a video but they have 100,000 views – 200,000 views per month. When you look at the monthly figure, you see that it makes about 1/4 of the Olivier Roland’s views.

Do also research with social blade , you’ll have surprises (that is why, now, I learn data science). Why are these monthly figures low ? This is because they don’t make enough videos and they’re not constant. Making a video per month is not enough.

Making a video per month is very bad for trafficking, it’s bad for the community (audience/subscribers). It’s impossible to retain someone and it diminishes the ability to reach more people. The result is that these Youtubers have fewer view of what they might have, It’s a spoiled talent.

All make sense. When there is little content, there is less to watch, less to share and less to critize.

Because there is not enough content, the audience (the community) is frustrated and loses interest and confidence in these Youtubers.

Attention, Youtube is just an example. It’s necessary to be constant in all fields. Being constant create something strong and powerful. Olivier Roland published more than 1000 videos and he was able to do this by being constant.

Being constant to create content regularly creates options to explore new topics for the creator. This create a habit or respect to a pat of the audience. And most importantly, create content regularly, create possibilities to be known, to be shared, to be discussed and to have a better impact in the lives of people.

Quantity VS Quality

Do videos published per day have the same quality as weekly video ? Honestly, it’s not possible. But when you have 7 times more videos in you Youtube channel, it has tremendously more strength and values than some 4K videos.

Sometimes a 4K video can have more impact than 10,000 video in average quality, but it’s just « one shot » as won at the Lotto. And you know that the majority of people who win the Lotto are ruined a few years later.

Yeah, what about you ? I mean, what are you doing in your life that works ? Could you do this more often so that it brings more value to yourself and to the world ?

For exemple, imagine that you like to write and you write 200 words once a week to create your book. Could you increase that to 400 words or write twice a week or write 400 words twice a week ?

Another example, you do sport once a week and it really good for you. Could you increase it twice a week ?

Be Curious And Effective

I personally like to learn new things in different fields. Generally these are fields that I don’t know at all. This stimulates my curiosity especially when it’s something I don’t know and I see a lot of people using that. I think it’s the same for you.

That’s right, I’m curious and I like learning but how to be curious and learn a new thing effectively to use it as quickly as possible everyday ?

How long to learn

This is something that I’m always adjusting but there are some fundamental principles for it to work.

Here is an excellent example : speaking a foreign language. I hope (and if not, I advise you to learn another language) that you’re a person who speaks a foreign language at a level that allows you to have simple conversations.

Now do a little analysis. How long did it take you to reach this level to have simple conversations (a level that allows you to understand 80 % of a conversation or a text) ?

As everyone is unique in his/her method of learning, imagine that with effective learning techniques, it took you 2-3 years to reach the 80 % level of understanding in foreign langage. How much time do you think it is necessary to move from a level of understanding of 80 % to 99.9 %?

The truth is more impressive than you think. To go from the understanding’s level of 80 % to 99.9 % (the native’s level), it’ll take you 20 years !

You know, it’s not necessary to have a 99.9 % level of understanding to be bilingual. If you understand subtile jokes, you can consider yourself a bilingual. On the other hand, if everyone around you laughs and you wonder why, you aren’t yet a bilingual.

It’s destabilizing but it’s a reality, it’s faster to go from 0 % level to 80 % level than to go from 80 % level to 99.9 % level. This is the law of diminishing returns. This law works in all fields. This law is similar to the Pareto’s principle. The Pareto’s principle is the fact that 20 % of actions brings 80 % of results, 20 % of customers brings 80 % of the company’s turnover , etc.

This means that at one time, it’s more costly to learn the little things that remain to be learned in this field than to learn something new in another field.

Let us continue with the foreign langage’s example. It took you 2-3 years to get an understanding’s level of 80 %. In the next 2 choices, what’s the most interesting for you ?:

  • To spend 20 years to reach the 99.9 % level for a foreign langage

  • To spend 20 years to learn 6-10 new foreign languages at a level of 80 %

You see the number of opportunities you can create in your life by knowing how to speak several langages, it’s cool.

But there is a difficulty in knowing when the law of diminishing returns is put into action, This is a difficult question to answer because it depends on the individual and the field. It’s a personal expedition. We must also not confuse this with the « crossing of the desert » that everyone does when we start a new project.

The thing I do and I advise you is to track your progress to know when 20 % of your actions bring you 80 % of the results. With this tracking of your results, you can know everyday if you approach or if you move away from your goals. If you move away from your goals, it means that you have to adjust your strategy quickly.

When you have found a smart way to track you progress, it’s cool because you have an intellectual horizon, cultural horizon, tools, methods, strategies that are extremely varied and diverse that the majority of people. You have an effective toolkit that comes from an extremely varied horizon.

You can see in my blog’s articles that I speak of different field. I’m curious and I show what I learn by giving my sources because I find that being curious give me excitement to be alive. When you travel to a country where you don’t understand either language or writing, it’s exciting, right ? You can do the same thing on a daily basis by learning things in different fields.

Now, let’s move on to the next level in curiosity. When you know extremely different fields, have fun connecting the concepts to each other. There is a type of creativity that involves linking concepts in a new way. Have fun connecting concepts that weren’t thought to be linked together and create something new. Look at how music evolves. You take 4 music’s types that nobody listen to, you mix all it and you create a new music’s type.

Today, we have the facility to have access to knowledge with books on billions of subjects. There are books on money, cooking, foreign languages, etc.

Attention, you need to learn in an efficient way with the principle of 20/80 and action (execution) everyday, no matter how difficult. If you learn all these things only to give you a good conscience and to impress your friends in discussions, you waste you time. It’s intellectual masturbation, it’s an illusion. It’s like this expression of Julien Greaux : « To be rich on Instagram, it’s like being rich in the game Monopoly ! ».

I hope that I motivated you to explore and learn new things effectively. And most important, you learn these new things to use them every day to boost your lifestyle.
