What’s up ? This is THE stephane ANDRE !!! I watched an Olivier Roland’s video and I learned some good stuff.

There are people who are named « High Achiever ». They’re people who have extraordinary results in their field. What’s interesting is that they all have a common pattern, they have a lot of productive hobbies. That’s not to say that they don’t have hobbies like watching videos, playing video games or partying, but it’s in small quantities.

Take the exemple of Richard Branson, the billionaire founder of Virgin. During an interview, he said that the hobby that had changed his life was sport. For him, the sport is fundamenal to improve the lifestyle but it’s not the case for all successful entrepreneurs. Steve Jobs wasn’t an athlete and he was successful.

The question is : « What hobby is unproductive that you can replace with a productive hobby and relax ? ». A productive hobby is a hobby that allows you to reach your goals, improve your lifestyle and relax at the same time.

Decreasing your unproductive hobby by productive hobby is a task to be done slowly and gradually as for sport. This is the cumulative effect. If instead of eating a piece of pizza, you eat a salad every day, after few months, you’ll have a huge difference in your weight, your energy and your well-being.

When I started to replace unproductive hobby with productive hobby, I put pressure on myself not to play video games, watch videos on internet or party with my friends. After a few months, I wanted to stop everything, I saturated with personal development information and I felt like I had no more fun living. So to decrompress, I party for 1 week.

This is where I realized that you always have to have a balance. « High Achiever » also have unproductive hobby, the difference is that they don’t spend 4-6 hours to watch videos.

An unproductive hobby is something that relaxes you but doesn’t bring you anything compared to your goals. In addition to the satisfaction that this unproductive hobby brings you, you feel guilty. It makes you nervous or even more stressed. Because of this frustration, you continue to do unproductive hobbies and you fall into an infernal spiral.

On the other hand, a productive hobby like sport, meditation, to read books interesting, to be in contact with the nature are hobbies which relax you, improve your lifestyle and allow you to reach your objectives. Scientific studies show that the 2 most creative activities are walking in nature and playing a musical instrument.

Make a list of unproductive hobbies that you do and replace them with productive hobbies. The idea is to reduce your unproductive hobby and increase your productive activities to help you achieve your goals.

Deadlift Correctly (Part 1)

I read an Nerd Fitness article  and I learned good stuff.

I see there are many people who are avoiding deadlift because they are afraid of getting hurt. It’s funny, it’s like squat.

Doing deadlift with good a technique is excellent for health, it allow your to have stronger joints and a stronger posterior chain.

All exercises can be dangerous when they don’t do with the proper technique, which is why it’s important to seriously study each exercise.

In workout programs, you can find the deadlift in the day of legs of back. This can be disturbing but the truth is the deadlift is a polyarticular exercise.

The deadlift (polyarticular exercise) works several different muscle’s group :

  • Your hands, your forearms, your arms to keep the barbell in the right position and the barbell is stable during the movement.

  • Your shoulder and trapezius help to hold the weight and keep it stable.

  • Your back and core help to keep your body tight and stable so that your spine is safe.

  • Your posterior chain  and your legs act as lever to lift the weight.

What is interesting is that deadlift is a basic human movement like the squat. It’s a « functional » movement that we do every day to take an object on the ground. Lifting a chair or taking a bag on the floor is deadlift.

Training yourself to do deadlift with a good technique at the gym, will allow you to do these daily tasks by decreasing the risk of injury. I imagine you’ve seen a person hurt his/her back by lifting something off the floor. It happened because the technique was bad.

Let things be clear, everyone needs to do deadlift. Look at that grandmother

Also, deadlift is the purest way to measure the strength. You lift or you can’t. Sometimes with gym’s members, we do a deadlift party, it’s fun.

The origin of the word « deadlift » is : you lift dead weight (motionless) of the ground.

In short, you take a barbel with weight and you get up with the barbell in your hands until your shoulders, hips and knees locked. Your arms should be straight during the whole movement and when you’re standing, the barbell is at the level of your hips.

Here are the different type of deadlift most common :

Your hands are at your hips width, outside of your feet.

Sumo Deadlift

You have a wide position with your hands inside of your feet.

Hex or Trap Bar Bar Deadlift

You need to use a special bar. In this way, you make the movement with another biomechanics.

Snatch Grip Deadlift

You use a wide grip like to do a Snatch.

Straight Leg Deadlift, Stiff Legged Deadlift, Romanian Deadlift

These accessory movements allow you to increase or decrease the range of motion.

Dumbbell Deadlift Variations

You can do this when you don’t have access to a barbell and weights or as accessory movement.

In this article, I refer mainly to conventional deadlift.

Now, let’s talk about equipment :

Flat shoes

Converse Chuck Taylor Classic  are good (this is what I use). There’s also Vibrams, you can do in socks or with Powerliters shoes.

This is optional but it can help you to not let your hands slip when you lift very heavy weights.

Deadlift can be taught in 1-2 sentences but there are complexities at different steps of the movement that you should know to avoid injury. I will develop this in the next parts.

Stop Procrastinating On Your Project

I watched an Oliver Roland’s video  and I learned good stuff.

At the beginning when I started my blog, I had difficulties to be regular in writing articles. I wasn’t productive. But procrastination is often a big problem for entrepreneurs.

Here are some strategies that help me and will help you to evolve your project every day. These are strategies that you can use today, they’re simple

Everyone must know your project

Talk about your project to all people you know, even people you meet from time to time. A maximum of people needs to understand your project. Talk to your family, friends, schoolmates, co-workers, employees of places where you go often, your cat/dog/red fish, etc.

Talk about your project in your social media like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, etc. In this way, people from different countries will know that you’re working on an important project for you.

What will happen is that when you meet these people, they’ll ask you how your project is progressing. At the beginning, you’ll probably find excuses to explain why your project doesn’t advance but you’ll quickly realize that it’s embarrassing to invent excuses.

It’s normal to have that feeling because no one wants to look stupid in front of people. Now that you don’t want to look stupid in front of people, it creates a new external motivation, a positive external pressure that will help you to evolve your project.

Make A Challenge

You can find a friend who also wants to create a blog or a company and both you make a challenge. Make a prize for each challenge. For example, the first who publishes 4 articles in his/her own blog, the loser must pay a restaurant or a concert (showcase) to the winner. Regularly each one checks the evolution of the other and once the challenge is over, you make another challenge.

You make a check or fill out a donation form for an association or a political party that you don’t like at all. You really have to hate the beneficiary of the donation. You give the check or the donation form to one of your best friend. If at the precise date you didn’t make your project evolve as planned, your friend sends the money to the beneficiary. It has to be minimal $100.- because it has to be painful. You want to do everything to avoid this.

These strategies allow you to have something more in your state of mind to realize your project. A plus to boost your will effectively.

Fitness History – United State – The Roaring 1920s and the Great Depression (Part 11)

The increased interest in fitness dissipated throughout the decade. A similar pattern is always repeated in the history of humanity after a war is won. Is that the society to relax, enjoy life and make fewer exercises. The Roaring 1920s earned this name because of this reason, the society was the most frivolous than any other in history until now. The priorities were eating, drinking, partying and other forms of entertainment.

In October 1929, the stock market crash signaled the beginning of a decade of economic depression. The economy has failed to recover until the United States entered World War II in 1941. With many other aspects of life, levels of physical condition fell during the Great Depression. The benefits that physical education programs have done through legislation that followed the First World War were short-lived. The funds for these programs were limited and were eventually exhausted because of the weak economy.

Despite the setbacks suffered by the fitness during the Great Depression, Jack LaLanne, who came to be recognized as a pioneer of the modern fitness began his career as a media fitness instructor . Throughout his life, LaLanne preached the values of lifestyle fitness. In the 1950s, the « Jack LaLanne Show » began to be broadcast on television, 25 years before the shows of Richard Simmons and Jane Fonda. LaLanne developed fitness programs including aerobics, water aerobics and resistance exercises. He has also presented numerous pieces of exercise equipment including the first cable machine, the secure system for squat called « Smith Machine » and the first machine « Leg extension ». Although LaLanne is often named as the inventor of the movement « Jumping Jack » history suggests that the real inventor was John « Black Jack » Pershing, a tactical officer at West Point in World War II. Although LaLanne preceded the movements of the modern fitness by some three decades, its ideology and its exercise programs had a good approach as demonstrated modern research.

Throughout world history, military conflicts have had a major impact on the state of fitness. The Second World War and its consequences for the United States were not different. Essentially, the modern fitness movement has evolved under the influence of the Second World War and the Cold War.

The United States are entered World War II with the bombing of Perl Harbor on December 7, 1941. With this declaration of war, he came to the need to prepare soldiers. However in recruitment, it became embarrassing found that many people were unfit for combat. When the war was over, it was reported that almost half of people prepared should have been refused or were given a non-combat position. These disturbing statistics helped gain more attention to the importance of fitness in the country.

There have been significant contributions in the gym during the 1940s, especially from Dr. Thomas K. Cureton from the University of Illinois. Cureton has introduced the application of research to fitness, which improved the recommendations of exercises to individuals. Cureton hasn’t only recognized the many benefits of regular exercise, he strived to extend the knowledge of the human body with the help of fitness. He wanted to answer questions such as « how many exercises to be healthy ? » and what types of exercise are most effective. But most important was that Cureton wanted to know how physical fitness could be better measured on an individual. Among his contributions, the most important were the fitness test development for cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength and flexibility. His research has resulted in several recommendations for improving cardiorespiratory fitness, including the identification of exercise intensity needed to improve fitness levels. His suggestions became the fundamental basis of future exercise programs.

Fitness History (Part 1)

I wrote a free eBook about my training and my diet. Many times my friends asked me what is my training so I found easier to make an eBook rather than repeat this every evening.

In my eBook, I explain why I don’t take protein powder. It often surprises people, I don’t know why. Did our ancestor had protein powder ? NO ! And I had the idea of seeking the history of fitness. Wow, I learned al lot of of things with a study from the University of New Mexico, it’s cool. This theme is in several parts because there is a lot of information. I want to share what I found with you, let’s go !

Primitive man and fitness (prehistory – 10 000 B.C )

The nomadic lifestyle of primitive man still needed to hunt and gather food to survive. Often tribes went for 1-2 days to find food and water. Regular physical activity was necessary to hunt and gather, it was an essential element of life. After a successful hunting and gathering, there was a party. To make parties a trip of 9-32 km (6 to 20 miles) was include to neighboring tribes to visit family and friends to dance and play. The party lasted several hours. This Palaeolithic model of seeking food and parties required a high level of fitness and was composed of different physical activities of daily life

The Neolithic Agricultural Revolution (10 000 – 8 000 B.C)

Neolithic agricultural revolution marked the end of the life style of primitive man and signified the beginning of civilization. This historical period has had important agricultural developments with the domestication of plants and animals and also the invention of the plow. These advances have allowed tribes who hunted and gathered to have larger amounts of food while remaining in the same area, transforming primitive man in an agrarian society (agriculture and farming). This era in the history symbolizes the beginning of a more sedentary lifestyle, the man began to decrease some difficulties of life and simultaneously reduce daily physical activity.

Your Talent

I had a chat last night with an old entrepreneur who has retired. He told me his life and give me some advice. I want to share with you what I understood.

You can make mistakes, make mistakes is a good thing. The difference is a wise person learns from his mistakes and a stupid person will repeat the same mistakes again and again. That’s why you have to be careful, you have to be aware of that.

What I mean is that no matter what you chose in your life, be sure to do something that you really want to do, use your talent. Qualify yourself as a person who represents who you are and be passionate about it.

Passion helps to express your talent in the best way with the best quality. If you are good at something and you practice a little bit, you know you’re not very passionate about it and there are people in your city that have the same talent as you and work it every day, study it every day and they will surpass you, you understand. If you are good at some things, practice, dont think that’s acquired and your talent can help to take care of your life.

What do you want to do in your life, you can do it, but be sure it’s somethings that people in the society can benefit, do it. If you are good to make videos game and that it’s beneficial for people of society and that arguments of your « why » are good, go ahead.

For me, it’s fitness I like to help people become stronger mentally, physically and spiritually. Find what you love to do and immerse yourself in, learn all about it. And if there is something you don’t know about it, you know that there are resources to find the correct information and once you found it, give this information to people. You understand when you do that, your passion become your profession.

Focuses you on your passion, on your excellent talent, cultivate it, be passionate about it. More you will be passionate, more you express yourself better with people about it and people will see the purity that you have in. Find what you love to do in your life and your professional career can be something cool, it can be something that you really want to do. Why not ? I have friends who make a lot of money but they don’t like their jobs and it makes them sad.

You have the opportunity to do that ! It’s true, we want to go to the club, to go out with girls but listening what is most important now ! Your idea is to go party now and work hard later. Do the opposite, work hard now when you’re full of energy and go to party later.

Being independent is a really good opportunity and don’t be afraid to do something your entourage had never did. Those who take risks, take calculated risks and they become very successful people in their lives. If you want a safe and quiet lifestyle, do it. I don’t want to prevent it, people live well like that. But if you want to be part of successful people, you have to take risks. Nothing spectacular happens when you don’t take risks, you have to trust you at 100%.
