Exercise To Avoid Overhead Shoulder Press Pain

What’s up ? This is THE stephane ANDRE. I watched an Athlean-X’s video  and I learned some good stuff.

I have a little pain when I do dumbbell press  or overhead shoulder press, maybe you have that pain too ? As I want to avoid having surgery like the majority of professional athletes, I tried to find out if I could find an alternative exercise to work the same muscles without pain.

This shoulder pain during this exercise is a real problem, because it’s a movement that is so advised to do to develop shoulders that the majority of people continue to do despite the pain. The longer a person continues to do this exercise with the pain and the more the person, several years later, will need to do a surgery to the damaged shoulder. It’s sad because people keep doing this exercise because they don’t know (like me at the beginning) that there are alternative exercises.

Pain

For me, I felt the pain at the starting position, it means with a dumbbell in each hand, dumbbells at the level of my ears or a little above my shoulders and my elbow at the outside. It was impossible for me to keep this position for more than 5 seconds and after a few reps, I felt less pain. A few months later, I changed the starting position. I started with my arms outstretched but the pain was still there. The feeling of pain is really bizarre because sometimes, I felt that my shoulders could be dislocated with heavyweight.

Solution

The idea is to do this exercise with the elbows forward because the pain is due to instability of the rotator cuff. In fact, this pain appears on the weakest shoulder.

This exercise has no official name and has a lot of variation but the best known name is barbell corner press. You need to use a barbell and put it in a corner of the gym. If you do this at home, I advise you to put a blanket in the corner of the wall to not damage the wall. Put a plate of 10kg (22lbs) or 20kg (45lbs) on the opposite side :

  • Lift the barbell with your 2 hands with a squat position to protect your back. Stand up with your torso leaning forward, your back straight, one leg forward and your hands almost on your torso with your elbows forward.

  • Press straight up overhead and exhale

  • Back to the start position and inhale

You can also do this exercise with one hand. Barbell corner press is an alternative exercise to dumbbell press or overhead shoulder press to continue developing your shoulders without pain and without sacrificing your shoulders.

Schools To Be An Entrepreneur

I watched an Oliver Roland’s video  and I learned good stuff.

There are schools with specific courses about entrepreneurship. But several studies show that only 10% of students create their own companies. The vast majority go looking for a job.

It’s possible that these students create their own companies 5 or 10 years later but these are statistics that are hard to get.

What is interesting is to talk to entrepreneurs and to see that the vast majority of them have never studied at a school about entrepreneurship.

Being an entrepreneur is like any other exciting job, we always keep learning. Being an entrepreneur is a mission of life and it’s necessary to become better day after day.

If there is no effective school to learn entrepreneurship, we know that there is a curriculum to be a businessman.

MBA

MBA (Master of Business Administration) is a huge curriculum. It’s often 1-2 years of your life after a professional experience. Which means that for 1-2 years, you don’t earn a salary. And it should be added that a MBA costs between $ 50 000.- and $ 100 000.-. You see, you really need to be motivated to do it.

It’s clear that having a MBA make it possible to have a better salary, it also helps to have knowledge in business but there are interesting critics on the results obtained on the field.

A MBA shows your employers that you’re able to sacrifice your life for your job. During a MBA, you work 70-80 hours a week to get it, which means that you’re able to do the same hours per week for your employer.

A MBA helps to create a network, but now with internet, there is another way to create a network. Interesting people don’t look for people who was in the best schools, they are looking for people who have projects and who shows that they’re capable to realize their projects.

Among the people who have negative reviews on MBA, we can find Seth Godin. Seth Godin is a well-know author and marketing expert in USA. He has a MBA from Standford and quotes : « Having A MBA is learning the best techniques for running a company in the 1990s for 2 years, while the world runs as fast as it can ».

We also have Peter Thiel. Peter Thiel is the co-founder of PayPay and Palantir and he’s the first external investor for Facebook. He has a MBA and he’s not satisfied with the results he obtained on the field.

What is certain is that a MBA is not really about creating entrepreneurs but about creating good employees able to run a company of the 1990s.

At the moment, there is no effective school in the world to learn to be a good entrepreneur. Being an entrepreneur is a state of mind and a decision of life. It’s all learned on the field, reading books and talking to more experienced entrepreneurs.

There is an interesting book « The Personal MBA »  that lets you learn the basics of a MBA without spending 1-2 years of your life without pay working 70-80 hours per week and saving between $ 50 000.- and $ 100 000.-. All this only by reading this book.

But I’m open-minded and it’s possible that someone took a course on entrepreneurship in a school. If that’s your case, it would be cool if you shared the experience you had in school and how it helped you to create and grow your company.

Sacrifices To Be An Entrepreneur

I watched an Olivier Roland’s video  and there is good stuff.

Olivier Roland spoke with a girl who had left her job for 18 months to create her company. This girls had left her job with a negociation to have a social assistance for 2 years. The problem is that her company doesn’t work well, she doesn’t earn enougn money and her soacial assistance will finish in 4 months. They talked together to analyse the problem.

It’s not Disney’s World

This girls didn’t work effectively and quickely for several reasons. She was lazy because she thought was going to succeed. It’s a good mindset but nobody succeed at the first shot. She thought she was in Disney’s World. Create a company is just the first step. It’s like having a stick for a hike. You have this stick to start to climb the mountain but it will be another stick at the top of the mountain. And the mountain is very hard to climb. When you have a company, it is not Disney’s World, but it’s instead « it’s the war and I want to survive ! »

This girls spend to much time to have a perfect design for her blog, a perfect design for her newsletter. It was not the most important thing to do. The most important thing to do is to grow your audience. If your content is good, your design’s blog doesn’t matter. Don’t do intelligent procrastination like her.

Entrepreneur

When you’re an entrepreneur, you’re not an employee. You face reality in a way that doesn’t forgive. That means that as your company doesn’t make money, it’s just an untested hypothesis.

Have faith and be optimistic is great but you need to test your product in the market as soon as possible. And you need to have this mindset « it’s war and I want to survive ! » like a warrior, like a samourai. Be an entrepreneur doesn’t means you will be the next Facebook, Amazon or Google because you’re an entrepreneur. Results will not come naturally because you’re an entrepreneur. You must give everything you have everydays like an ahlete.

Fight for

You must be ready to sacrifice your time (miss parties, birthday party, marriage, etc) and your energy to have all the chance on your side. You must do have huge motivation, by this way when you see an obstacle, you’re excited. And if you’re not excited, this obstacle will not stop you. Everydays act, act, act, act, track your act and adjust.

Have a strategy with key actions to have first sales as soon as possible. If your product don’t work, it’s not a problem. Refund customers, use audience feedback about your product and change characteristics. Try, try, try, try and must be ready to word 10 hours per day for your company.

Spend your time to act and learn. Track your actions and adjust to improve results. Devote all your time to grow your company.

In War With My Weak ME

We are in war. I’m in war, I’m in war with the iron, I’m in war with my weak ME, I’m in war with my negatives thoughts, I’m in war with my complaisance, I’m in war with my bad habits.

I’m in war with the squat bar, I’m in war with weights of the deadlift, I’m in war with the bench press, I’m in war to stay focused on my diet.

You know, many people think I’m weird. I always walk with a bottle’s water in hand all day. They found me strange because I train on Saturday night. They find me weird because I watch a lot of training videos.

But I’ll tell you something. If it’s to build my body and my mind, I’ll be there. I don’t want to be a normal person, I want people to look at me as an Alpha male, I want people to ask me how I managed to do it to explain them that it’s a very hard work, explain them sacrifices, explain them the hours I spent to train my body, explain them mental benefits and muscles that I gained over years by constantly pushing my limits in training, explain them I feel less fear of making life’s challenges everyday.

I want to share what I learned. I learned that mental strength triumph of physical strength. I also learned that mental strength can be build to allow the body to exceed its limits. They go hand in hand !

En Guerre Avec Mon MOI Faible

Nous sommes en guerre. Je suis en guerre, je suis en guerre avec la fonte, je suis en guerre avec mon MOI faible, je suis en guerre avec mes pensées négatives, je suis en guerre avec ma complaisance, je suis en guerre avec mes mauvaises habitudes.

Je suis en guerre avec la barre de squat, je suis en guerre avec les poids du soulevé de terre, je suis en guerre avec le développé couché, je suis en guerre pour rester concentré sur mon régime.

Tu sais, beaucoup de personnes pensent que je suis bizarre. Je me balade toujours avec un bouteille d’eau à la main toute la journée. Ils me trouvent bizarre parce que je vais m’entraîner le samedi soir. Ils me trouvent bizarre parce que je regarde beaucoup de vidéos d’entraînements.

Mais je vais te dire un truc. Si c’est pour construire mon corps et mon esprit, je serai là. Je ne veux pas être quelqu’un de normal, je veux que les gens me regarde comme un mâle Alpha, je veux que les gens me demandent comment j’ai réussi à faire ça pour leurs expliquer que c’est un travail très dur, leurs expliquer les sacrifices, leurs expliquer les heures que j’ai passé à entraîner mon corps, leurs expliquer les bénéfices mentales et les muscles que j’ai gagné pendant des années en poussant constamment mes limites à l’entraînement, leurs expliquer que je ressens moins la peur de faire des défis de la vie de tous les jours.

J’ai envie de partager ce que j’ai appris. J’ai appris que la force mentale triomphe de la force physique. J’ai aussi appris que la force mentale peut être construite pour permettre au corps de dépasser ses limites. Les 2 marchent main dans la main.
