What’s up ? This is THE stephane ANDRE !!! I heard Olivier Roland’s tips and I learned some good stuff.

You know, sometimes I worked all day like crazy and at the end of the day, I felt like I haven’t progressed. Maybe you have already experienced this? That’s why I’m always learning new things to be as productive as possible. There are 2 books that help improve productivity and time management, it’s “Getting Things Done” and “Cut To The Chase” .

Here are tips from these 2 books to improve all this.

If a task can be done in less than 2 minutes, do it right away

Immediately make a task that requires less than 2 minutes has several benefits:

  1. Adding a task on your To-do list requires less than 2 minutes, it’s the same number of minutes as for a task that can be done right away.
  2. It’s more efficient to add the task that require more than 2 minutes on the To-do list, otherwise this list will be endless and unmanageable.
  3. Don’t make a task that requires less than 2 minutes right away can have disproportionate consequences in relation to the time needed to achieve it (like sending a confirmation or cancellation message).

So remember, if this task takes less than 2 minutes, do it now.

Warning

Sometimes you have to plan moments to focus only on a task or an important project. These specific moments shouldn’t be interrupted, even by a task than requires less than 2 minutes.

Try it so you don’t have any insomnia

Insomnia reduce productivity. Often the source of insomnia is malaise, bad mood, stress, poor sleep hygiene, etc. Insomnia can have serious consequences in the relation with others and can also cause road accidents, drowsiness, memory loss, absenteeism and the list goes on.

For chronic insomnia, it’s advisable to see a doctor for treatment. For transient insomnia (up to 3 months), there is an tip to free your spirit of thoughts that obsesses you.

Put a paper and a pen next to your bed. When you have a thought that obsesses you, you write it on the paper and beside you write the action you have to do to erase this thought.

Here is 2 example:

  • If the thought is: “I have to send a quote to this client”. You note on the paper: “Client quote => Look for supplier prices”.
  • If the thought is: “I have to lose weight”, you note “Lose weight => Look for a personal trainer”.

As you write down your thoughts and the action you should take, you should feel more peaceful.

Have an attitude “Let’s go see”

Sometimes, going on the field can help you learn more than analyze data on your computer. So the next time there is a problem, go see for yourself on the field. This may allow you to have ideas for finding a solution more quickly.

Don’t use a foul language in the workplace

It may sound like grandparent’s advice but it’s common sense. When you use a foul language, you can offend a person without knowing it. A person who doesn’t feel offended in the workplace is a serene and productive person. An offended person doesn’t want to work and wants to find another job. Many entrepreneurs have lost talented people because of their foul language without knowing it.

Not using foul language avoids conflict and difficult situations to manage.

When you do something, ask yourself why you do it

Often we do things out of habit, without wondering if it’s worth doing. This can waste time and energy and it would be better to stop doing this task or delegate it.

So regularly, ask yourself this question: “What happens if I delete this task?”. If the answer is nothing, stop doing this task. If the answer is something else, look if you can delegate this task.

Do it

No matter what dream you have, do it realize in your life. Here is a quote from Goethe: “Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it”.

Close the loop

has anyone ever told you, “Well call you back if there’s a problem”. And 2 week later you have no news and you wonder if everything works well. I know there is this quote: “No news is good news” but it’s frustrating t be in uncertainty. When a person doesn’t close the loop, it leaves others waiting and this can complicate relations. Don’t be like these people, stay in touch to avoid complicated situations.

Don’t let your smartphone become your master

With new technologies, we can stay in touch 24h/24h. But that’s not a reason for every smartphone notifications to be a priority. Sometimes I see people, every time there is a notification, they take their smartphone as if it was the end of the world. No matter where they’re and no matter what they do.

Define time slots and limits for the use of new technologies. Turn them off when you need to be focused for a task or meeting. Let others know that you no longer look at your emails and messages after a certain hour or weekends.

With that, you create a clear border between the moment you work and your private moments. It allows you to destress.

Personally, I turned off the sound for notifications from my smartphone. It’s really cool to do that, I’m more serene.

Save your computer file regularly

There are 2 types of users:

  • Who often back up
  • Who don’t back up until the day they lose important data

Losing files on a job you’ve been working on for months is very annoying. So backup often and take advantage to make copies at different locations (such as an external hard drive). With Cloud, you also have access to Google Drive and Dropbox which are very effective. Better to save than not enough.

Avoid Being Workaholic

There is a trick to avoid being a workaholic that the majority of entrepreneurs don’t do. It’s to have a productive activity outside of work (because the company is based on a passion). If you’re not sure what a productive activity is, you can read this article I wrote. Click here ].

A lot of entrepreneurs are workaholics, which means that they’re work addicts. It’s not really a bad behavior, especially in the early years of the company because there are many new things to learn and few employees. But in the long term, it can block you to achieve the success you should have.

When I say « work addict », I don’t mean that a person is an addict like with cocaine, heroine, crystale methamphetamine, etc. We, human beings, are afraid of emptiness. This is very well explained in the Tim Ferriss book « 4-hour Workweek » . For example, you become more and more efficient using the 20/80 method (Pareto’s law) and you manage to earn 2 hours of free time per week. Now, what are you going to do with these 2 hours of free time ? Are you going to sit and count the insects ? No ! And as today more and more entrepreneurs have a laptop, they’ll continue to work on the laptop.

The problem of working during free time are :

  • Too much nose to the grindstone and do things that aren’t really useful. It prevents you from having peace of mind, serenity, being creative, decompressing, taking a step back, etc.
  • Work to work. For many people, consciously or unconsciously, if they don’t work, they’ll be bored. So they’ll do things that aren’t really useful to be busy. We can call it « intelligent procrastination ». With « intelligent procrastination » people around you see that you’re working but it’s not things that really make your company evolve. For example, spending 2 days choosing the font and colors of your website is « intelligent procrastination ».
  • In the long term doing things that are not really useful for the company’s evolution, will have negative effects. You’ll lose you serenity and have more stress. The symptoms of this state of mind are that you have the impression that everyone is stupid. At that moment, you have to take a holiday right away, otherwise you’ll have a burn-out.

I know it’s a little paradoxical because the first years of the company, you have to work as much as you can because there are lots of things to do and there is no budget to pay employees, but it’s important to have a productive activity to keep the balance in your life.

Usually when you start looking for an idea to start a company, you make a list of the things you like to do the most. This productive activity can be one of those things from the list that wasn’t used to create your company. This can be an activity such as flying a plane, kickboxing, meditation or something else that allows you to relax and forget about work.

Don’t hesitate to write this productive activity in the comment section and if you don’t know, make a list of things you like to do to get ideas.

Have Productive Hobbies

What’s up ? This is THE stephane ANDRE !!! I watched an Olivier Roland’s video and I learned some good stuff.

There are people who are named « High Achiever ». They’re people who have extraordinary results in their field. What’s interesting is that they all have a common pattern, they have a lot of productive hobbies. That’s not to say that they don’t have hobbies like watching videos, playing video games or partying, but it’s in small quantities.

Take the exemple of Richard Branson, the billionaire founder of Virgin. During an interview, he said that the hobby that had changed his life was sport. For him, the sport is fundamenal to improve the lifestyle but it’s not the case for all successful entrepreneurs. Steve Jobs wasn’t an athlete and he was successful.

The question is : « What hobby is unproductive that you can replace with a productive hobby and relax ? ». A productive hobby is a hobby that allows you to reach your goals, improve your lifestyle and relax at the same time.

Decreasing your unproductive hobby by productive hobby is a task to be done slowly and gradually as for sport. This is the cumulative effect. If instead of eating a piece of pizza, you eat a salad every day, after few months, you’ll have a huge difference in your weight, your energy and your well-being.

When I started to replace unproductive hobby with productive hobby, I put pressure on myself not to play video games, watch videos on internet or party with my friends. After a few months, I wanted to stop everything, I saturated with personal development information and I felt like I had no more fun living. So to decrompress, I party for 1 week.

This is where I realized that you always have to have a balance. « High Achiever » also have unproductive hobby, the difference is that they don’t spend 4-6 hours to watch videos.

Have fun and be productive

An unproductive hobby is something that relaxes you but doesn’t bring you anything compared to your goals. In addition to the satisfaction that this unproductive hobby brings you, you feel guilty. It makes you nervous or even more stressed. Because of this frustration, you continue to do unproductive hobbies and you fall into an infernal spiral.

On the other hand, a productive hobby like sport, meditation, to read books interesting, to be in contact with the nature are hobbies which relax you, improve your lifestyle and allow you to reach your objectives. Scientific studies show that the 2 most creative activities are walking in nature and playing a musical instrument.

Make a list of unproductive hobbies that you do and replace them with productive hobbies. The idea is to reduce your unproductive hobby and increase your productive activities to help you achieve your goals.

Trick To Be More Productive

Have you ever finished a day completely exhausted and after analysis, have the impression of having accomplished nothing ?

Don’t worry, it has happened to me and it happens to everyone a few times. The truth is that it’s important to understand that there is a difference between being productive and being busy. It’s really something that you have to remember often.

To be busy

Here is an example, imagine that you spend all day pushing a building with hands. It’s serious, you really want to move the building. It’s obvious that at the end of the day, you’ll be very tired but the building will not move.

You’ll have to spend a lot of energy, give a lot of effort but the results are negative, the building did not move a millimeter. In fact the efforts you make aren’t systematically correlated to the results you will get.

With the building’s example, it’s easy to understand that this task destined for failure but with the activities of every day, it’s more complicated to identify.

Let’s use another example. Imagine that you spend all day pushing a block of stone on the sand. At the end of the day, the block of stone will have been moved a little bit (and this is a better result than with the building). But is there a way to move this block of stone faster ? Yes, with a crane, it’s more efficient and it takes less effort. It’s true that finding a crane requires a lot of energy and time, but the crane allows you to have better results more impressive. With the crane, you can move the block of stone in 30 minutes to the destination.

To be productive

Often the methods to be productive requires a lot of effort and you have the impression to build nothing, but when the methods are put in place, it will give you continuous results without asking you a lot of effort.

Today, after my training, I spoke with a gym employee about blogs. He wondered why I had a blog because for him blog are dead. It’s true that blogs are less fashionable than videos and it’s true that a blog takes years to have an interesting traffic to build a company.

But what he doesn’t see and what the majority of people don’t see is that if the content of the blog has no expiration date, 5-20 years later, your blog’s content will have always value and will be usable. If yo create content based on news, 2 months after your content is no longer valuable and no longer usable.

And it must be added that the blog’s mailing list is more efficient than social media’s subscribers when it comes to promoting your product/service. It also makes me think that since 2005, every year, people say email is dead, ahhaha haahahah.

Vision

It’s not easy to realize that we’re busy instead of being productive and it depends on our perception. By having a clear vision of what you want, you create a company that is at the service of your life rather than your life at the service of your company. Creating content with no expiration date to educate people is my vision. On internet, one of the keys to success is to be able to create the maximum content without expiration date to not be dependent on fashion phenomens.

With this vision, it helps you identify when you’re busy and when you’re productive. This skill allows you to search for what is most effective to reach your vision. At first, there are things that you consider effective and they’re not and vice versa. The process to reach your vision is to explore new things to move forward and grow.

Stop Procrastinating On Your Project

I watched an Oliver Roland’s video  and I learned good stuff.

At the beginning when I started my blog, I had difficulties to be regular in writing articles. I wasn’t productive. But procrastination is often a big problem for entrepreneurs.

Here are some strategies that help me and will help you to evolve your project every day. These are strategies that you can use today, they’re simple

Everyone must know your project

Talk about your project to all people you know, even people you meet from time to time. A maximum of people needs to understand your project. Talk to your family, friends, schoolmates, co-workers, employees of places where you go often, your cat/dog/red fish, etc.

Talk about your project in your social media like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, etc. In this way, people from different countries will know that you’re working on an important project for you.

What will happen is that when you meet these people, they’ll ask you how your project is progressing. At the beginning, you’ll probably find excuses to explain why your project doesn’t advance but you’ll quickly realize that it’s embarrassing to invent excuses.

It’s normal to have that feeling because no one wants to look stupid in front of people. Now that you don’t want to look stupid in front of people, it creates a new external motivation, a positive external pressure that will help you to evolve your project.

Make A Challenge

You can find a friend who also wants to create a blog or a company and both you make a challenge. Make a prize for each challenge. For example, the first who publishes 4 articles in his/her own blog, the loser must pay a restaurant or a concert (showcase) to the winner. Regularly each one checks the evolution of the other and once the challenge is over, you make another challenge.

A regrettable donation

You make a check or fill out a donation form for an association or a political party that you don’t like at all. You really have to hate the beneficiary of the donation. You give the check or the donation form to one of your best friend. If at the precise date you didn’t make your project evolve as planned, your friend sends the money to the beneficiary. It has to be minimal $100.- because it has to be painful. You want to do everything to avoid this.

These strategies allow you to have something more in your state of mind to realize your project. A plus to boost your will effectively.

Be Limitless Like In The Movie

I read an Nerd Fitness article  and there is good stuff.

You’ve heard we use only 10 % of our brain. Do you imagine be able to use 100 % of your brain ?

The book and the movie « Limitless » are based on it and when I watched the movie, I liked it. A lot of people liked because we dream about it for years.

« Limitless » is the Eddie Mora’s story who by chance find pills that give a unlimited power to his brain. He write a book in 4 days, he leans several new langages, he stops smoking, he lose weight and gain muscle. He earns a lot of money in stock market.

This guy transformed his life in video game (he becomes a little bit like James Bond). Is it possible to become more productive without medications ?

How

To become limitless, here is the list of things we should be able to do :

  • Read more often – We can read a book very very quick and remember all the important things.

  • Write a book – We can write a book in few days or weeks instead years.

  • Learn a langage – We can talk a langage in few weeks and we can have a nice conversation with people with that langage is their native langage.

  • Have an excellent physique – We can train in an effective way without spend several hours in the gym to see results.

Maybe you will change some things in this list but I think this list is fun.

The concept is to accomplish more things by spending less time :

  • The ability to retain more information

  • The ability to spend more time to learn

  • Make the time you spend learning to be more effective

  • The ability to learn more different things quickly

First : Exercice

Here a excerpt from an article of Scott’s website « Live Your Legend »  :

While on a boat with Richard Branson, a man asked « How can I be more productive ? » Keep in mind, Richard is the founder and operator of a 400-company conglomerate. He also has dyslexia and a pretty piss poor academic track record.

Yet somehow, from space travel to deep sea exploration, to music and cell phones, this guy has literally been able to accomplish a bazillion times more than the average Joe. And he’s still only 61.

Charles Basch of Columbia University summarized how exercices affect functions :

  • Increase oxygen flux to the brain

  • Increase brain neurotransmitters

  • Increase neurotrophins that ensure the survival of neurons in the areas responsible for learning, memory and higher thinking

and « Driven to Distraction: The Study of Attention Deficit Hyper Disorder »

 

 

give many studies on physical activity and the increase of focus and the increase of the memorization when we study. « Exercices don’t make you more intelligent but they help to optimize the brain to learn ».

It’s with this study that  Charles Hillman discovered that do a few phyical exercices before school can increase memory of 5-10 % among children.

Second : the plan

Malcolm Gladwell says in his book « Outliers »

that people become expert after 10 000 hours of pratice. Warning, you must learn in the good way, otherwise you become an expert by doing it with a bad execution.

It’s mean, if we learn something in the good way, 8 hours per day everydays, we should be an expert in 3 years and a half.

But we don’t have all this time and we don’t want to be the master of the experts.

When we learn a langage, a dance, a martial art or a new musical instrument, we need to identify the key movements or the key words. We need to become proficient in the skill. Don’t worry about the rest of the stuff.

Exemple :

A new instrument

Rather than studying complex compositions of classical music, look current music and studies the patterns.

  • If you learn basic guitar chords, you can learn 80 % of popular music.

  • If you learn basic piano chords, you can quickly learn pop music you always wanted to play.

The goal isn’t to to play in a symphonic orchestra but to learn the basics and take pleasure in making progress.

Third : Environment

Now our brains are ready to learn and we identified the skills or goals we want to have, it’s the time to create an environment for success.

I wrote an article to create your headquarter . We will do the same thing to help us to become limitless.

A : Stop to being multitasking

Often people advise to be able to do several thing in the same time but the only thing this behavior do is to decrease your ability to learn and your productivity. Look the results you have when you work and every 10 minutes you watch a video on YouTube. Every time you change activity before you finish, you become less creative and productive.

Si you want be productive, focus on one thing and finish it. If you learn a new langage, dedicate time only for it and nothing else.

B : Remove all distractions

Often people thing they can do their passion in evening around 21h-22h (9pm-10pm). It’s not true because people are distracted very easy all day. They spend a lot of time on Facebook, Youtube, Gmail, Instagram, Snapchat, etc. Then when everybody sleep, it’s at this moment they work on their passion.

Work on your passion immediately after your school/work and you will see the difference. It’s guarantee !

There are apps like « Self Control »  to allow you to not be distract any more

If you want write a book, go in a boring place. Don’t go in a place where there is a lot of cool stuff.

If you want read a book, go in a place where there isn’t TV. Don’t be tempted or cancel you cable (we can watch everything on internet now).

Be Limitless

Here principles :

Exercice. In the morning 10 minutes of bodyweight’s exercice

Plan. You know exactly the 2 skills you need to study and they must be done before 16h (4pm).

Environment. Blocks for a certain time websites that can disctract you. Cancel your cable also.

James Clear’s tip . If you learn a musical instrument or a langage, do it for 5 minutes each day. Create this habit is more important than the « perfect » time.

Use help of others

If you want learn something quickly, you can find some people who learned this skill quickly. Ask to this person how he/she learned this and test it.

Make mistakes the 1st day

You can learn a langage with a grammar book for years but if you don’t speak this langage with people, it’s useless. It’s like deadlift or something else, accepts that failure is a part of the process to be better.

Learn 1-2 new skills

Learn Taekwondo, piano and spanish is too much. Select 1-2 and stay focus on it.

Different kind of music

If you try to read more or be more productive at work, experiment different type of music like rap, electro, classical music, movie soundtrack, etc. At different moment of the day, you need to be in a different state of mind (calm, aggressive), use music to be more productive.

Sleep more

In the movie « Limitless », Eddie Mora lives with the minimal hours of sleep every day. In the reality, it isn’t possible to sleep 4h. A body lacking sleep functions similarly to an intoxicated body  .

3 Things To Be More Productive

There 3 things to boost your productivity

Have a mirror on your desk. Some scientific studies show when we have a mirror next to us, we have a greater probability to take good decisions to reach our goals. For exemple, if you want to lose weights, you will eat healthy foods rather than junk foods when you have a mirror in front of you.

In fact, we don’t know why it works but there is a theory like what we have more conscious of ourselves and we have more guilt and shame when we didn’t resist to a bad temptation.

Have a productivity system

Like in every domains, there is methods more efficient than others to be more productive. It’s better to have a productivity system than noting, really. A productivity system is a way of organizing.

The most famous method is « Getting things done ». This book is a little bit complex but there is good stuff inside.

It’s possible to make a mix of serveral books about productivity system like « Zen to done ». This book is a simplifiction of « Getting things done ».

The concept is to have a Word files or another word processor with your goals of the week. These goals must be done this week. Then you set your most important tasks of the day, max. 3 per day. These tasks must be done at the end of the day. It means that if it’s 19h or 7pm and all tasks haven’t been done, I stay at work to do it. I stay because it’s the most important tasks of the day and these tasks help me to reach my goals of the week.

Have a Word file or a word processor file help you to see what are your priorities. When you determine your most important tasks of the day (the day before or in the morning), they must help you to reach your goals of the week. When everydays you do some tasks that help you to reach your goals of the week, it’s really really cool.

Once you have done your most important tasks of the day, you do the rest by trying to group them.

Take breaks

It’s useless to work 4 hours non-stop without take a break. This decrease your productivity. The ideal is to have a method like the « Pomodoro », it means tomato in italian. This called « Pomodoro » because it’s a kitchen timer. For 25 minutes of work, you have 5 minutes of break or for 50 minutes of work, you have 10 minutes of break.

All 4 « Pomodoro », around 2 hours, you will take a break of 20-30 minutes. During this break do a meditation or play a musical instrument or walk in the nature to get your head out of the work. Don’t use this moment to make phone call or check your emails. Do something really different of your work to back to work more productive on current tasks.
