I watched an Olivier Roland’s video  and I learned good stuff.

I discovered that there were techniques to learn quickly and effectively based on science. These are things I didn’t learn at school and I think it’s the same for you.

The concept of the school system is to teach you how to memorize and use your new knowledge « at best » in new situations. It means that the school prepares you « at best » for your life. In fact, you prepared to have the minimum in your life.

You can spend 20 years or more in school and the school never teach you to learn. In fact, you only memorize for your exams.

it’s true that school can’t do everything so if the school doesn’t teach us to learn, we’ll learn that elsewhere. Here are some simple tips and tricks to learn effectively. These are things that help you improve your ability to learn to have more success in your life.

There are several universal skills you need to train to have an excellent learning ability :

Long-term memory

Learning how to properly memorize things you need or want to learn allows you to memorize more easily and for longer. Having an elephant memory is really handy.

Working memory

Working memory is where you download the element of your long-term memory to process them.

Ability to focus

Improving your ability to focus allows you to focus on something without being distracted. This improves your productivity and allows you to truly experience the present moment.

Will

Improve your will allows you to have the strength to reach your goals without self-sabotage. For example, you make a diet and your will allows you not to eat chocolate cake or you have a workout program and your will allows you not to play video games every days.

Motivation

Learning what motivates you and keeping this flame of motivation allows you to be more motivated than 80 % of people. Motivation means having more energy, more enthusiasm and more creativity in all that you do.

Know that there is good news. You can improve all these skills with tools and method in mode 20/80 (Pareto’s law).

In 2008, researchers from the University of Bern in Switzerland and the University of Michigan in the United States found something revolutionary. What they discovered is that it’s possible to significantly increase our fluid intelligence. Let’s make a comeback in the past. In 1970, psychologists Raymond Cattel and John L. Horn found a concept that accepted by the majority of psychologists. This concept is that our intelligence divided into 2 main categories : fluid intelligence and crystallized intelligence.

Fluid intelligence is our raw intellect. This means that it’s our ability to think logically and solve problems in new situations.

Crystallized intelligence is our intelligence regarding our skills our knowledge and our experience.

Before 2008, researchers thought it was impossible to improve our fluid intelligence. These researchers believed that fluid intelligence was innate and that the crystallized intelligence was tied to what we learn.

In 2008, Dr Jaeggi and a researchers team created a software designed to train working memory and tested it on 70 people divided into 4 groups.

Here the scientific study .

The groups used this software 20 minutes a day for 8 to 19 days. They passed an IQ test before training with the software and after training with the software. The results compared to 4 other groups that hadn’t used this software.

The results were extremely surprising. All the people who have used this software have had a better IQ test. Here is the detail of the test result :

  • Fluid intelligence increased on average by 40 %.

  • The increase of fluid intelligence is directly related to the time going on to train with this software. People who trained for 19 days had increased their fluid intelligence 4 times more than those who trained for 8 days.

This show us that we can train our working memory as we can train our physical strength and endurance by doing sport.

This is what this software does, it trains our working memory. We use our working memory to count, read, play chess, think and so on. We can train our working memory as a muscle.

Data Science Underrated Job

I have just enrolled in a Data Science course on Udemy  and I learned good stuff.

I know you’ve heard many times « Look this one, this is the job of the future ! ». The simplest thing I can do is explain why it’s interesting to learn about Data Science. This is extremely useful skills for the future.

The principle is that the more data there is, the more work there is for Data Scientists. Let’s look at the amount of data created in the world in the past, present, and estimate for the future.

130 Exabytes have been created by humans since the beginning of humanity until 2005. Ok, you didn’t understand. Don’t worry, it was the same for me. Let’s go back to the source.

The source, it’s 1 byte (1B) and 1 byte is the necessary place for a hard drive to hold a letter. For example, the letter « S » = 1 byte (1B).

You go to the next level and you multiply 1 byte (1B) by 1000 which gives you 1 Kilobyte (1Kb). A book’s page contains between 2000 and 5000 letters so we can say that a half of page of text is about 1 Kilobyte (1Kb).

You go to the next level and you multiply 1 Kilobyte (1Kb) by 1000 which gives you 1 Megabyte (1Mb). A 500 pages book is about 1 Megabyte (1Mb).

You go to the next level and you multiply 1 Megabyte (1Mb) by 1000 which gives you 1 Gigabyte (Gb). A human genome (coded) can be contained in 1 Gigabyte (1Gb).

You go to the next level and you multiply 1 Gigabyte (1Gb) by 1000 which gives you 1 Terabyte (1Tb). If you take an HD camera and take a picture every day, every hour for 80 years. All videos can be contained in 1 Terabyte (1Tb).

You go to the next level and you multiply 1 Terabyte (1Tb) by 1000 which gives you 1 Petabyte (1Pb). If you take all trees of Amazonian forest to make paper and you write text on both sides each paper, all this paper represents between 1 and 2 Petabyte (1-2 Pb).

You go to the next level and you multiply 1 Petabyte (1Pb) per 1000 which gives you 1 Exabyte (1Eb). All existing data on planet Earth is contained in 1 Exabyte (1Eb).

I think now you understand better how we measure the amount of data in a hard drive. At first, I told you that 130 Exabytes (130 Eb) created by humans from the beginning of humanity until 2005.

In 2010, this increased to 1200 Exabytes (1200 Eb). In 2015, this increased to 7900 Exabyte (7900 Eb). The forecast for 2020 is that this will increase up to 40 900 Exabyte (40 900 Eb).You see how data creation is growing in the world, it goes very very fast.

With a graphic, it’s easier to visualize all that.

The blue line on the graph corresponds to the quatitiy that machines (computers) can sore. You see, there is much more data than what computers can store.

The red line corresponds to what Data Scientists can process as data. You see, there is much more data than Data Scientists can process.

Another important point is that the gap between the machines and the Data Scientists will increase over time.

There are very few Data Scientits in the world and because they’re rare, they’re expensive or their salaries are high.

As companies increasingly seek ou Data Scientists, universities and engineering schools are beginning to offer this type of trainining.

The fact that the number of data increase, the companies demand to have Data Scientist to proccess data also increase. This demand is so enormous that it’s expected that in dozen years, everyone will know the Data Science’s basics as the programming now.

I advise you to do research on Data Science, you’ll see, it can be used in any industry, it’s really interesting.

Find The Gym For Your Goals (Part2)

You noticed there are several categories of gyms. That’s why you have to take your time to think about a gym that fits your needs.

Fitness center franchise

In the best known franchises, you will have cheap membership. It’s cheap but you have few amenities, some type of trainings are forbidden, free weight section is limited and often the staff has no experience.

Health clubs/Sport clubs/YMCA

Clubs look like franchises but they have a better service. There is more amenities, towel service, child care, pool, tennis court. Membership can reach $100, some type of training can be prohibited and free weight’s section limited.

Note : Franchises and clubs can be convenient if you travel a lot because with their membership, you can train in different cities.

Locally owned gyms

These gyms have a better equipement, a free weight’s section bigger and a better quality staff than franchises and health clubs. Membership is around $25-50 and it’s real that amenites are less good than health clubs.

Weightlifting club/barbell club/crossfit

It’s a room with bumper plates, dumbbells, barbells and pullup bar. With the membership, you have a coach and classes, that’s why it’s expensive. These gyms are open at certain hours during the day. These gyms have their own workout program, you can’t do your own workout program.

College/university gyms

it’s cheap and you need to paid upfront in full.

You can have a discount « alumini » memberships if you go to the college or university that you attended. If you don’t live near of you old college/university, some gyms offer memberships to family members of alumini or staff, local « senior » memberships or event just local resident memberships. What is great with this type of gym is you can have acces to their full facilty (pool, racquet courts, classes, etc).

Test drive the gym

The next step is to look for gyms in your city now that you know differtent types of gyms.

Do a test in gyms to see if the equipement meets your needs. Some gyms offer pass for 1-2 weeks. During the test phase, go train the same days that you plan to train after signing the contract.

Imagine that you find the perfect gym, you sign the contract and eveydays you train, it’s war. The gym is full of people and you can’t use equipement. This is a situation to avoid.

Here is what is important to see during the test phase :

  • Is there enough equipment for everyone or you have to fight to have a bench ?

  • Does the equipment work well ?

  • What is the gym’s atmosphere ?

  • Is it clean ?

  • If you go befoire school/work, is there enough shower available or you have to wait ?

You can read gym’s reviews on internet by searching with Google or DuckDuckGo. Attention, on internet people prefer to complain than to do compliments so be careful. For me the best thing to do is talk to gym members to know what is positive and negative.

Contracts

A lot of people don’t want to have a membership gym because one of their friend had a bad experience to stop a gym’s membership. This for this reason it’s important to take your time to read the contract and understand clauses.

Here things to look at in a contract :

  • A membership termination clause because for exemple, you move or you lose you job. This is rare but sometimes you can stop a membership if you live near the gym. Usually there is a fee named «  early termination fee » (that’s what I have).

  • The possibility when you’re on vacation ou you have to work for several weeks in another city to freeze your membership.

  • If the gym goes bankrupt, what happens to members ?

  • Membership renewal is automatic ?

You know salespersons work with commission so if a sales person make you a promise, make sure that this promise is in writing. Taking the contract at home is the thing I advise you to read it quietly and understand clauses.

If you feel that the salesperson put pression on you or that you don’t feel comfortable for another reason, leave the gym.

Note : There are states that has specific laws. For exemple, you can cancel the contract only 2 days after signed it. It would be a shame if you signed this type of contract without being aware of this clause. This is why it’s important to take the contract at home to read it quietly.

Here different membership’s fees :

  • Activation fee

    You pay these fees when you’re a new member. You pay these fees once.

  • Monthly cost

    it’s a fee you pay every month

  • Maintenance fee

You pay these fees per year. Attention, some gyms have a special clause that says : « We don’t have this kind of fee now but later, it’s possible to add these fees without telling you ». Be sure to know this clause if it is in your contract.

When I enrolled in my gym, there was an offer for people who applied for registration on internet. Look at gym’s website to know offers but also ask always to salesperson if there are discounts.

In gyms, there is often a membership’s range of price. You need to negotiate, don’t hesitate. Don’t forget that the more you take the more expensive membership, the more the salesperson will have a larger commission. If the salesperson tell you : « No », it doesn’t matter, you tried to get the best price.

By negotiating, somethimes you can register in a gym for the first time without paying the activation fees. To do it, you need to talk to the person who has permission to do this. Sometimes they can call you 1-2 days after to offer you an exceptional offer.

You can also have a nice offer by paying an annual membership up front. Look at the price difference.

Also you can have offers with you health insurance. It’s always with a limited number of gym but look if you have this option.

Stay focus

The difference between a workout at home and a workout in a gym is that in a workout in a gym, you can really make your potential evolve to the maximum.

For exemple, if you do a barbell’s workout, you will have always heavy weight plates to go to the next level. It’s the same thing for dumbbells. You need heavier, it’s here. No need to worry about buying new.

Of course, there are negative pointst to enroll a gym. You have to move there (bike, bus, car, etc), you to wait if you go during busy hours, the cost and do your workout around unkown people.

I repeat, you can train at home to be healthy or gain strength with a bodyweight workout program. You can buy a set of dumbbell, barbell, kettelbell or a sandbag. You can do sprints or walk (like my father) outside with any weather and it’s free.

For me the gym, it’s an important moment of my day. It’s the moment where I’m focus on myself and the society’s pressure no longer exists.

Have Ideas To Create Content

The most important thing : Write your ideas

When you have an idea, you write this idea right away in your notebook or in your smartphone (I advise you Evernote ).

Look at how it was when I didn’t take notes for my ideas. Boom, I have a great ideas. I tell myself : « Don’t worry Stephane, this idea is amazing, I’ll never forget it ! ». The next day, I wake up and I know I had a great idea but I forgot what it was. Do you know that, right ? This is why writing your ideas is very imporant.

Learn about your passion

What I do to have several ideas a day, it’s first to create content about a passion. Talk about a topic you’re passionate about automatically gives you ideas. Read a lot and watch a lot of videos about a topic you’re passionate about. Having discussions with people who share the same passion as you and participate in training to develop your passion.

Others places to work

Travel or go to different places in your city (university, park, library, railway station, airport). Being in an other landscape or an other environment (calm/dynamic) is inspiring, it opens the mind.

To ask questions

Ask questions to others. By exemple you can ask this question to one of your friends : «  Imagine that I can write an article on anything. What would you want ? ». The answer will give you several ideas.

With these tips, you’ll have more ideas in your notebook that time to write article or create content. This is so cool.

Protect Your Idea

Many people have an idea to create a company but they’re afraid that someone will steal it. They don’t know when and who to talk to test this idea.

The truth is that to protect an idea, we need to test it on the field as quick as possible. The world is huge and several people in the world have the same idea than you in different countries.

Every great companies that you admire went through this phase. There is several people who had the idea for Facebook, Uber, Airbnb, etc.

I will not to lie you, it’s possible that a person steals your idea. Facebook is a good example. In the movie « The Social Network », Mark Zuckerberg hired by 2 students (2 brothers) from Harvard to code (create) a social network for the university. Mark Zuckerberg found the idea great and created his own social network without speaking to 2 brothers.

After Mark Zuckerberg’s social network became a world success, the 2 brothers had about $60 millions damages and interest. The 2 brothers tried to have more because compare to the Facebook’s value, this isn’t huge. But the judge told them that they had to be satisfied with $60 millions they had because nothing proves that the 2 brother social network would have had the same success as Facebook, it was just an idea.

Risks exist, on other hand, have an idea on paper for 3 years and suddenly see a person execute this idea with customers is extremely frustrating.

The good method is to seek how test this idea as quick as possible on the field. It’s obligatory that somebody in the world has the same idea as you. Those who make the difference, the winners are the people who have the fastest and most relevant performance.

There are several legal protections and the most use by startups is Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDA). Before to share your idea with someone, you have him/her sign this document where he promises not to share your idea for several months. It’s a document you can use.

NDA doesn’t guarantee everything so the safest way to protect your idea is to test it on the field and adjust it.

We will see a simple way and efficient to boost your company. Better than contact cold client by phone or emails.

Think about this. Contact companies that already have your customers and don’t compete with you. You offer them a partnership with you to increase sales.

A personal trainer who just start his business had difficult to find clients. The tips is to find companies that have the same type of client but they’re not competitors to make partnerships.

This personal trainer spend 2 hours to identify his client types.

The client type majority of the personal trainer was a woman, 30-40 years old with an university degree who doesn’t have time to make play sports, who doesn’t have the discipline to do it and who need someone who comes home for motivation and training.

Now, which companies have the same client type ? After having searched, the personnal trainer found it, it’s estheticians, beauty institutes, etc.

So the personal trainer went to see estheticians and beauty institutes and say them : « Your clients come here to be more beautiful and have a better look. Me, I can help them to have a better better physique, better health and be more happy ».

One week later, he had more clients that he could handle. This was a quick start.

You have several ways to do this. First, you determine your client type. If you don’t have your business yet, you can make your client type’s hypothesis to start and adjusting after. It’s important, everything is based ont the client type.

Then you identify companies that have the same client type as you.

And action ! You will offer several things to these companies :

  • You can leave them your visit cards, flyers, etc.

  • You can ask them to actively promote your services with a commission

  • You can offer something for free to their clients as a free eBook « 7 tips to…. » in exchange of customers emails to send them the eBook.

There are other ways of making partnerships but they are good to start. There are people who will be afraid to do this but it’s worth for your company.

What Is Motivation

I read a Nerd Fitness article  and there is good stuff.

A guy named Roger Bannister in 1964, Oxford, England, did something impossible. He ran 1.6km (1 mile) in 3 minutes and 59 seconds. While 9 years, the world record was 4 minutes and 01 secondes. 3 years after Roger Bannister’s record, 13 persons ran 1.6km (1 mile) in less than 4 minutes.

It’s like the Tony Hawk’s record with the 900° on a half-pipe. Since 9 persons did it .

How is possible than suddenly abilities improves ? It’s because of equipment or we impose ourselves limits ?

Brain VS muscle

The truth is that you’re physically able to go beyond the limites that your brain tells you.

Look, in 2012, a group of trained cyclists did a 4k timed trial as fast as possible. Their guideline was « Use all efforts ».

They did this trial again with a virtual avatar who had the same speed than them at the first trial. The average speed of all cyclists was 1 % better than the first trial. Remember at the first trial, cyclists were in mode « Use all efforts ».

They did this trial a third time with a virtual avatar again. Cyclists didn’t know that the virtual avatar was a little bit faster than them. Again, cyclists beat the virtual avatar by increasing their performance of 1.7 %.

It’s like to play to Mario Kart and do a race against the ghost of your last performance. You know exactly how to increase the speed and you have a visual cue.

Tim Noakes, South Africa professor of exercices and sport science at the University of Cape Town, make the hypothesis that it’s not our body that slow down but our brain who control WHY and HOW our body slow down.

« Fatigue is an emotion, a construct in the mind that helps ensure that exercise is performed within the body’s ability. That emotion is affected by many factors, such as motivation, anger, fear, memories of past performance, self-belief, and what the body is telling the brain….our physical performance is regulated by the brain, not limited by our hearts, lungs, or muscles ».

We’re able to do more than we think. Cyclists always beat the virtual avatar who was faster than them.

« Better to cultivate discipline than to rely on motivation. force yourself to do things. force yourself to get up out of bed and practice. Force yourself to work. Motivation is fleeting and it’s easy to rely on because it requires no concentrated effort to get. Motivation comes to you, and you don’t have to chase after it.

Discipline is reliable, motivation is fleeting. The question isn’t how to keep yourself motivated. It’s how to train yourself to work without it ».

If you want to be motivated to train, stop it and stop crying. It’s better to build a system that isn’t relied on motivation. Create a system like the cyclists virtual avatar, create an avatar of your last week performances. Don’t be relied on inspiration but build a system for success, a system that improve your abilities each week.

Sometimes, we need people to push us, challenge us to do things we don’t want to do to go to the next level.

Surround yourself with people better than you in your activites. More you do activities with people who have more experience than you, more you become better.

And sometimes, you need a technological assistance to buid these habits :

  • Self-Control to block time-wasting website on our computer

  • Rescue time to track our efficiency

  • Alarm clocks across the room

Did you see ? No ones of these exemples are relied on a motivation, will or be better than someone else. It’s external forces that we use to exceed our limits.

Outworked

Imagine what you can accomplish if failure isn’t an option. McClusky make a theory in his book « the winner is the athlete for whom defeat is the least acceptable rationalization ». So people who want to do everything to achieve their goals almost always accomplish theirs goals.

This is why Will Smith is one of the most successful actors.

Of times in our quest when we don’t make sacrifice to succeed, we fall into the belief that accomplishing our goal isn’t possible.

In fact, this rationalisation may appear to several people event before trying !

Instead of rebuking yourself when you aren’t motivated to do exercice or that you struggle to eat healthy, take a step back and look it with a different angle :

  • « how can you build a habit of success and be focus on rather than seeking a motivation to realize it ? »

It’s easy to become ensnared (to chase motivation and fail) or to rationalize inaction and never try. We all fell into the trap.
