What’s up ? This is THE stephane ANDRE !!! I heard Olivier Roland’s tips and I learned some good stuff.

There is an interesting book by Mark Levy named Accidental Genius . This book explains a method to unleash your creativity and brain’s power to find solutions to your problems.

This book doesn’t speak to the fact that supposedly we use only 10% of our brain but rather that we underestimate an important thing, write what we think. When we think without written support, we deprive ourselves of an enormous source of structuring thoughts. Our thoughts go further and more structured when we think in writing than when we think in our head and we forget those thoughts very quickly.

Unfortunately, there is a difficulty. It’s that we write very slow compared to the speed we think. But Mark Levy has a method to overcome this difficulty, it’s free writing.

Free writing

Choose a problem that takes your head, take a piece of paper or open a document on your computer and start writing all that happens in your head.

For exemple, if you wan to start a company, the problem can be : « how can I start a profitable company as soon as possible ? ». Like a brainstorming, you write a maximum of idea in a minimum of time. To ease this process, ,you write without paying attention to grammar, vocabulary, syntax, punctuation, etc. You write with lots of mistakes to make it fluid. Anyway, you don’t write for someone, you write for yourself so you can let go, write whatever you want.

When you have a moment where you block, keep writing. You can write 40 times the same word, it doesn’t matter. As you continue to write, you will force your brain to find other ideas and to return to the flow of thoughts. It’s advisable to do this for 10 minutes.

I tested this method and it’s surprising but I have to use it more often to develop this skill. What I like with this method is that I can use it for all areas of my life and it takes 10 minutes in the day.

Feed Your Brain Is Important

To be successful in the areas that interest you, there is an important principle that is to nourish your brain in a healthy way. It’s the same principle for your body. If you eat fast food burgers every day, you’ll become fat, your self- esteem will decrease, your energy will decrease, your libido will decrease and your lifetime will decrease.

If you feed your brain every day with the « burgers » of information, I mean news (newspaper and tv), you’ll have a negative state of mind. The information of these newspapers or these media are 95% negative and 80% of this information, you’ll forget them in 15 days. These are events where you have no impact on it, it uses your brain’s energy for noting and because of this negative information, you become more and more worried.

Good food for the brain

The most efficient and accessible way is to read books of excellent quality. When you read books of excellent quality, you have access to the best brains in the world for an affordable price, or even free if you go to a library. With books, you also have access to the best dead brains. It’s not because the person is dead that this person has to stop giving us value.

Purpose of reading these books is to allow you to have a solid foundation for achieving your goals. To start, you need to create a list of books and use the SMART goal method (SMART => specific, measurable, accessible, realistic and defined over time). If you want more detail, go to a search engine like Google of DuckDuckGo and enter : SMART goal.

For example, you can give yourself the goal of reading a book a month. I advise you to write a summary page for all the books you read. Scientific studies have shown that when you write the summary, you will remember more things and you will memorize more things than if you only read the book. Here are 2 scientific studies here  and there .

Check the book’s quality

To start, reading reviews on books that interest you on Amazon is a good place to start. It’s clear that it’s not done by experts but you can see people who like and hate the book. It’s up to you to do your own analysis of the numbers of positive and negative comments. If there are a lot of comments (at least a hundred), it’s a good sign.

It’s possible to access lists of books complied by people who read a lot of books. It’s obvious that these lists will never correspond at 100% to your objectives but it allows you to find pearls. If you want to train in business and personal development, Josh Kaufman’s Personal MBA  is excellent. It’s not necessary to like all the books of Personal MBA but most are extraordinary.

Action

Here is a simple exercise that I propose to you. Find 5-10 books of excellent quality that can help you achieve important goals for you. Determine a deadline (1 year) and calculate how many books you should read per month and how much time you have to spend every day reading.

When Your Internet Company Is Not Working

Here are some tips to improve your situation if you want to have an internet company or you already have an internet company. These principles are basically intended for infopreneurs, it means selling information products (ebook and online training) but over time all companies should use these principles to boost their reputations.

In an internet company, there are 3 pillars : traffic, authority and relation.

Traffic

This is the number of people who visit your website and your entire ecosystem (social media – instagram, youtube, facebook, snapchat, twitter, etc.).

Authorities

This is the way your audience sees you as an expert. You can be an excellent expert and not know how to communicate, so your audience sees your expertise at a level below your actual expertise. And it can also have the opposite situation where your audience sees your expertise at a level higher than your real expertise. In this case, you’re a crook !

Relation

This is the level where your audience appreciates you as a human being rather than a company.

Pillars check

What is interesting to do is to note where you think you are in the 3 pillars (traffic, authority and relation) from 1 to 10. « 1 » is the person who has just started and « 10 », is the person who is one of the best infopreneurs in the world like Gary Vaynerchuk  or Casey Neistat .

Don’t hesitate to ask people you know to have a more objective point of view. The ideal is a close friend who is really interested in your company and who understands what you’re doing. Ask this friend : « What rating would you give me between 1 and 10 ? Go ahead, be frank, you don’t need to spare my ego ! ». With an outside eye, it will help you find the problem.

It’s possible that you have a huge traffic on your website but if people don’t perceive you as an expert who has enough experience to help them and they don’t like you (they perceive you more like a salesman as a human being), they will not buy your products and services.

Conversion rate

This concerns the conversion rate between your traffic and the people who sign up for your email list. People who sign up for your email list are people who are really interested in what you’re doing and who want receive the free gift you are offering (ebook or exclusive video). People who subscribe to your email list have given you permission to contact them through their email knowing they can unsubscribe at any time.

What it interesting to do is to note where you think to be in your conversion rate from 1 to 10 ? For example, when there are 100 people visiting your website, how many are subscribed to your email list ? If you rate is 0, you’re not offering any interesting gifts or you’re not making a call to action for your email list. In these cases, you have to work on it to offer a better free gift or tell people that they can sign up for your email list.

We must know that today, email remains the most effective way to contact people and it will remain so for a long time. Attention, that doesn’t mean that when you send an email thanking for the loyalty of your subscribers or a promotional email for a product/service, you shouldn’t also talk about that in your ecosystem (social media) with a video, a picture, a post on different platforms.

It’s important to know that if you’re doing content marketing and your company is based on the free content you create, you need at least a 5% conversion rate. If you do below that, you have work to do to improve your conversion rate.

It’s possible that you don’t have a product or service to sell or like me at the beginning, I sold a product but there are only 5 people who bought it. In this case, you can do a survey with the people who are on your email list to find out what is the problem they would like to settle as quickly as possible. With this method, you’ll soon be able to create a profitable product because you solve the main problem of you audience. Attention, it’s necessary that you have 1000 people subscribed on your email list to make this survey.

Coaching

This is one of the simplest ways you can make money. It doesn’t matter if you have more than 1000 people on your email list. When we start an internet company, it’s the easiest thing to do. You offer your skills as a service to your audience. With a small audience, a good authority and a good relation, you’ll have people who will be interested to work with you by doing coaching sessions on Skype, for example.

If you’re a person who likes to write (like me), you can create an ebook that you can sell between USD 17.- and 27.- to start earning some money.

Action

We could talk about this for hours because every situation is different. I don’t know your situation but by following these advices, you will be able to improve your company’s situation, so ACTION.

A Pratical Tip To Validate Your Approach

I have just enrolled in a Data Science course on Udemy  and I learned good stuff.

How was the A/B test « Number Of Product » ? Easy or difficult ?

Here is the result I found.

I think you noticed there was something bizarre. There is an anomaly. We imagine that the more the client has products, the more the client is satisfied with the bank so this type of clients should stay in the bank.

In the first 2 bars we can see that a client who has 1 product is more likely to leave the bank than a client who has 2 products. But when a client has 3 or 4 products, we see a huge rate of clients leaving the bank.

Look, there is a little bizarre detail. In the 2nd bar, we can’t see the « Exited » label. This is because there is no place in the orange part to put the text. To make it simpler, we’ll remove the label « Exited ». Drag and drop on the « Exited » text label to the outside.

Perfect, we can read the percentages. On the 1st bar, we can see that among the client that have 1 products, 28% left the bank. On the 2nd bar, we can see that among clients who have 2 products, 8% left the bank. This show us that clients who have 1 products are more likely to leave the bank than clients with 2 products.

And for the next bars, we observe an anomaly. On the 3rd bar, we can see that among the clients who have 3 products, 83% left the bank. On the 4th bar, we can see that among clients who have 4 products, 100% left the bank. We clearly see that there is a problem and we need to do a deeper analysis to understand what is going on .

As a Data Scientist, we need to explain what happens in bars 3 and 4. Usually when a client has 3 or 4 banking products, that means he/she is satisfied and is loyal to the bank. But in our case, it’s the opposite because there is a high rate of client who left the bank. This is the time to do deeper analysis.

The first thing to analyze is the quality of the data. There is a very big anomaly and it may be because there is something insignificant in our data that disturbs the statistics. For example, it’s possible that when the bank selected these clients in this sample, there were very few clients with 4 products and all those clients with 4 products left the bank. Sometimes chance can create anomalies and you have to play attention to these effects of chance because they don’t seem important but they can create false interpretations.

To start, we will check the number of clients with 4 products.

In « Measure », move « Number Of Records » (which gives the number of observations) on « Label ».

We observe on the first 2 bars than many clients with 1 or 2 products selected for our sample. For clients with 3 or 4 products, we can see that there were fewer clients selected for our sample.

There are 220 clients with 3 products and 60 clients with 4 products. These small number of clients probably explain why we observe these anomalies.

In this sample of randomly selected clients, there are very few clients with 4 products and they all left the bank. In this situation, we can confirm that it’s a chance. When thing like that happen, you have to be very careful not to make conclusion too fast and make misinterpretations.

The conclusion is that a lot of clients have been selected for category 1 and 2. For category 3 and 4, there have been few clients selected so we can’t do accurate statistics. We need to do deeper analyze for these categories of clients with 3 and 4 products.

Now, let’s put the percentage back on the bar chart. Click on the « Back » button.

Or do a click and drag of « SUM(Number of Record) » to outside.

We saw that there is an anomaly and what is interesting to do is to have a comment to remember to do a more in-depth analysis of columns 3 and 4.

Right-click between the bar chart’s title and the bars. Select « Annotate » then « Areas… ».

A window appears. In this window, you write « Low observation in last 2 categories » and click on the « OK » button.

Click on the comment and move it on bars 3 and 4.

The next time you work on this bar chart, you will see this comment that will remind you to seriously analyze client who have 3 and 4 products.

Validate our approach

It’s time to show you how to validate an approach and how to validate the data. For this we will create a new A/B test.

Duplicate this worksheet with a right-click on the « NumberOfProducts » tab and select « Duplicate ».

Everything is ready, the idea is to find a variable that doesn’t affect our results. That is a variable that has no impact on a client’s decision to leave or stay in the bank.

Take for example, the variable « Customer Id ». Client’s identification number has no influence on the client’s decision to stay or leave the bank.

We’ll do an A/B test with the last digit of the « Customer Id » and we’ill check that there is the same clients proportion who leave the bank in the 10 categories of the last digit of the « Customer Id ». The 10 categories are the numbers 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9.

Let’s g.To start, we will create the variable that contains the last digit of the « Customer Id ». To have this variable, we will create a « Calculated Field ».

Right-click on « Customer Id », select « Create » and click on « Calculated Field ».

Name the calculated field « LastDigitOfCustID ». In the text field, we use the « RIGHT » function with « Customer Id » in parenthesis to select the last character of the « Customer Id ». In our case, the last character of the « Customer Id » is the last digit.

Here is the code to write in the text field : Right ({Customer Id},1)

Oooops, you see there is a small mistake => The calculation contains errors.

There is an error in the formula because « Customer Id » is a number variable and the « RIGHT » function applies to a variable of type « STRING ».

To use the « RIGHT » function, we will convert « Customer Id » into a string. We will use the « STR » function with « Customer Id » in parenthesis.

Here is the code to write in the text field

And click on the « OK » button : Right (STR({Customer Id}),1).

Now, you can see that our calculated field « LastDigitOfCustID » is in « Dimensions ».

Click on « LastDigitOfCustID » and move it on top of « NumOfProducts » in « Columns ».

Now we have a new bar chart and we see that for every last digit of the « Customer Id » there is about the same proportion of clients leaving the bank. All these proportions don’t correspond exactly to the average of 20% but these slight variations aren’t important.

Seeing this uniform distribution allows us to validate our data because these data are homogenous.

Conculsion

Here’s how you can check the homogeneity of your data. You take a variable that has no impact on the fact that a client leaves or stays in the bank. The example we did with the last digit of the « Customer Id » is excellent. We were able to verify that in each of the categories taken by this variable, if there was the same proportion of clients leaving the bank. As is the case, we can validate our data.

Imagine another result. When we do the test with the last digit of the « Customer Id », we observe that for one of the numbers, the rate of clients who left is really higher than the average. This shows us that there is a problem in our data because it indicates an anomaly.

You can find other ways to verify your data by using other « insignificant variables » to see if the distribution is homogeneous. But be careful when you select an « insignificant variable » because there may be traps.

Here is an example. If you create a variable that takes the first letter of the first name, the distribution will not be homogeneous. The reason is simple, there are many more people who have a name that starts with the letter « M » than with the letter « Y ».

I like to share the techniques, tactics and methods that I tested and worked for me and for others. As an athlete, I like to see my potential’s extent, I like to win and I like to see people around me win. It’s always frustrating to see someone who has a talent and isn’t fighting to realize their dream.

Often when I discover something in a book or someone shows me a technique that I test and that works, I want to say to the world « Look this technique works, try it right now ». That’s why I created my blog.

Challenges

I watched a The Family‘s video  (I wrote an article about it Part 1 , Part 2 and Part 3). I decided to publish 5 articles per week for several reasons :

As an athlete, I like to push my limits. Posting 5 articles per week has forced me to find themes that fascinate me so I can enjoy learning new things and writing articles about it. Every day, I’m looking for new things. There are articles I write and don’t published because I realize that it doesn’t fit my vision.

At the beginning of my blog, you can see that I write articles to introduce some bodybuilders and I stopped doing that because I decided not to talk about athletes using steroids. With challenges, it allows me to refine the vision of my blog and my failures are part of the learning process.

From, 2014 to 2015, I published 1-2 articles per week. Toward the end of 2015, I watched a video about a 30-day challenge. After watching this video, I decided to write 5 articles a week for 30 days and after published 1-2 articles a week. During the 30 day challenge, it was difficult for me to write articles (find subjects and find the time to write texts) but my blog’s traffic seriously increased. When I took the rhythm of 1-2 articles a week, I felt less stressed because I had less pressure but my blog’s traffic of my blog had decreased.

I started to get frustrated because one of the important things for a blog is to have traffic. So, I started again this challenge of 5 articles per week during 30 days by writing only on topics where I have fun. My blog’s traffic increased like the first time. Frankly, it’s cool because I know that with this frequency, I can reach more people. And that allows me to develop my business. Yes, it’s possible to bring value to the world by bringing value to yourself, thus making money. Both are compatible.

Today, I have prospects and clients coming from my blog. People read my articles, it’s free and then they send me emails or messages with social media to find out if I can solve one of their problem.

Learn

With this frequency of publication, 5 articles per week, it allows me to accelerate my learning curve. You can see the difference of writing between my first articles and my last articles. I improved my writing style. All that, it took me a long time and I know that I have a lot of things to improve. And I also learned that success is something that builds little by little. There is no success in 3 months or 1 year. Success is a thing in the long run. You learn to make the difference between lies and truths to have a healthy life in all areas.

For 1-2 years, you can see I’m learning to make videos on Instagram and Snapchat. I make 5 videos a week. Since about 6 months, I make an audio file (podcast) on my old exercise articles. In this audio file, I read the article so that you can have the information in a passive way. You can listen to my audio file while driving, working instead of listening to music. Making videos and podcasts are things I learn to do for my blog.

Have fun

have fun

Sharing content frequently no matter the format, text, audio, video, it’s something that I do with fun. People are asking me how do I keep doing this for years. The answer is that I have fun when I do that. It’s like when I train or dance Cuban salsa. When I do that, I have fun and if I can learn something to improve myself, I do it.

I know there are people who create content to make money quickly but it doesn’t happen that way. You need to do this for 3-5 years for free to build your reputation and then you can afford to make money. That’s why it’s important to have fun when you do that because the difficulties come, you see them from a different angle. There is no cheat code so have fun.

Automate Any Company

When I read Tim Ferriss’s book « 4 Hour Work Week » , I discovered what a muse business was. A muse business is an automated business.

In this book muse business is mainly on internet but it’s possible to have a traditional business that is largely automated. The most important thing in this concept is the automation of certain tasks by machines in a company. The traditional business can be almost completely automated by humans but it’s easier to do with machines.

You should know that it’s much easier on internet to have a business serving your life rather than your life serving your business (like you work 70 hours a week). The reason is that there are many things that are done by your audience and the machines. With internet, the machines are computers.

I wrote an article about this topic « An Army For Your Blog ». In this article, I explain that I have an army that works for me everyday. This army is simply composed of all my articles that I published on my blog. Which means that today, I have an army of more than 695 articles.

Each of my articles continues every day bringing people who are interested in the article’s subject. Some of these people subscribe to my newsletter (mailing list) and by giving their emails, they become prospects. Then some of these prospects become clients.

That’s what is excellent. It’s true that I take time to write these articles but once I published them, they work for me for years without my intervention.

Look at this, if I stop creating content for 6 months or 1 year, the traffic of my blog will decrease but the decrease will not be catastrophic. My articles will always keep bringing people to my blog for a long time.

It’s the same principle if you have a product to sell on your blog. People who are interested will click on the link that will take them to the product’s sales page. They will read the description and if they want to have the product, they will buy it immediately.

As you can see in the product purchase process, there was no human intervention. The client did most of the work assisted by a machine (computer). That’s the concept of having a business serving your life. It’s perfectly possible to do that with humans but it’s more complicated and there are management constraints.

For years humanity has been trying to get rid of painful or repetitive tasks.

For example the norias. A noria is a wheel with pots that taking water from a river. All this only works with the strength of the river and the water from the pots is collected in an aqueduct that will fill a reservoir. With a machine like that, people in the village no longer need to go to the river every day to get water. This machine makes it possible to automate a repetitive and painful task. The only thing people in the village have to do is maintain the machine (noria).

There are also examples of traditional businesses that are automated to serve the life of their owners.

  • Automatic vending machine

    It’s a fully automated machine that is between the client and the company. Do you see the difference that there is between a person who is there 24h/24h permanently to serve drinks to clients (painful and repetitive task) and this machine ? The machine’s maintenance consists only in regularly looking for money, reloading food/drinks and repairing.

  • Automatic laundry

    It’s is a fully automated machine that is between the client and the company. It’s the same principle, it’s a repetitive and painful task that is replaced by a machine.

  • Others

    It’s the same for photo booths, impedance scales, automatic sphygmomanometers and the list is very long.

A company serving your life

Ok, I know there are people who will tell me that if companies only operate with machines, one day, there will be no more human relations. It’s true that human relations are necessary for to have a healthy life but for me, there will always have human-based companies with people who want human interactions.

Sometimes I want to go to a coffeehouse or a grocery store to buy a drink rather than buy it in a automatic vending machine because I want to talk to people.

What I mean is that it’s easier to have a business serving your life when it’s based on machines (computer or others).

I explain, it’s easier to entrust repetitive tasks to machines like cashing money and serving a drink or cashing money and washing clothes. These are not exciting jobs for employees and it’s not going to help them flourish. When a task is repetitive and painful, it’s necessary that this task be done by a machine so that a human being can concentrate on a creative and fulfilling task.

It’s always possible to have a traditional, complex, automated , human-based business serving your life. For that, you have to find people who manage your business for you. You can be the only person who deals with strategy and processes or another task that you like to add value, but other people manage your business every day for you.

The main thing is to have a business serving your life and not your life serving your business. You are the person who knows where your ship is going and you work so that people are efficient and the interactions in your ship are as effective as possible. You aim is that it’s not you who does the daily operations of your ship.

The Importance Of Counting Calories

As you already know, food is our energy. The energy from food, we call it calorie. Calories composed of macronutriments : carbohydrates, proteins and lipids.

With carbohydrates, proteins and lipids, we can know the minimum number of calories we need to consume, it’s the Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body needs to function without doing any physical activity. That’s the number of calories you burn while you stay in bed all day.

With your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), you can find your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) . Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) is the number of calories your body needs in a day when you train.

Total Daily Energy Expediture (TDEE) varies according to your level of activity during the day (the intensity of the tasks you have to do during the day and the intensity of your training).

Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) is always dynamic because it’s influenced by the Not Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT). Not Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT) is the number of calories you burn in a day when you have no workout. But attention, it doesn’t count the calories you burn when you sleep and eat. It only counts the calories you burn when you walk, read, write, work, study, etc.

As the intensity’s level of your tasks that aren’t a sport activity changes all the time, it changes your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) all the time. Here are 2 scientific studies to better understand the Not Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT), here and there .

Now that you’ve seen your Total Daily Energy Expenditure changes all the time, you need to know that it changes your caloric deficit when you want to lose weight (be shredded) and your caloric surplus when you want to gain muscle.

The phase for losing weight (be shredded) and gaining muscle influenced by 2 things : morphology (endomorph, ectomorph and mesomorph) and genetics.

Take the example of an endomorph person. An endomorph person is a person who can easily store fat because, it’s a person who has greater resistance to leptin. Leptin is a hormone that manages your metabolism and your appetitie (leptin controls your feeling of satiety). An endomorph person who has this type of information has good tools to know how to manage his/her Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE).

For my case, I’m a mesomorph person. Which means that I’m a person who is losing weight fast and gaining muscle fast. At first, I didn’t count my calories because it easy for me to maintain a good physique. But since I’ve been studying my body to find out how it works, my results are really better for the long term.

That’s why no matter what your body type, I advise you to take the time to count your calories to have the best body possible in the long term.

I use an app on my smartphone to count my calories (you can scan barcodes). It’s My Fitness Pal. Try it, it’s really helpful.

If you intentionally don’t take care of your health, accidentally, you will have an illness.
