What’s up ? This is THE stephane ANDRE !!! I heard Olivier Roland’s tips and I learned some good stuff.

Entrepreneurship and personal development are 2 related elements. To start, I think it’s necessary to define “personal development” because there is everything and anything. Personal development means self-development. Self-development means getting better. It’s important to clarify this definition because the majority of people (and also the majority of my family members) think that personal development is a scam.

What I understand is that these people are talking about companies in the personal development industry. And yes, as in all industries, there are scammers but the difference with personal development is that we buy not a product or service but training. And to know if a training is effective it takes several months. But I repeat again in every industry, there are scammers and there are excellent personal development companies. Now, we agree that personal development is about getting better.

For a company, a company must always improve its products or services to satisfy clients. As you can see, the word « improve » is common to both. Entrepreneurship is something that takes you out of the comforts zone and asks you to be bold. It’s something that many people dream of doing but don’t dare to do.

Entrepreneurship is something that involves risks and even significant risks such as no longer having money, going bankrupt, being the laughingstock at by your family or co-workers who have stayed in their jobs and who tell you : « You see, I told you ! », etc.

The problem with entrepreneurship is that we can’t learn to be an entrepreneur at school. I know there are good schools that teach a lot of things, but it’s only in the field that we learn. And with high tech, everything is changing very quickly and schools don’t have time to create a course on a specific topic because on the field it has already changed.

Same common point

When you decide to be an entrepreneur and start a company, you need to improve yourself and learn new things to grow your company. My opinion is that entrepreneurship is a great way to become a better version of yourself.

Entrepreneurship and personal development are linked because of the verb « to improve ». There is also another way to improve yourself in life. We’re experiencing difficult problems that make us move out of our comfort zone and evolve. But the problems always happen by surprise (like my dad today with his early Alzheimer) while the entrepreneurship, it’s us who decide to make this process, it’s intentional. And because it’s intentional, this process allows us to improve yourself, to improve the lives of loved ones and improve the world.

Have The Chance That You Deserve

What’s up ? This is THE stephane ANDRE !!! I watched an Olivier Roland’s video  and I learned some good stuff.

We’re lucky that we deserve. It’s true that there a bit of luck in everyone’s success. If I take my case, I recognize that I was lucky to be born in an industrialized country with internet and a good education. But I also created some of the luck that allows me to have my lifestyle today.

We aren’t all born under the same star or not with the same cards, that we can’t change. The thing we can do is to do with what we have to get something better. Having this state of mind is essential to having a better lifestyle. It’s important to be proactive. Whatever the bad luck or the handicap, you have the possibility to realize your dreams. It will be harder than other people but it’s possible with perseverance and patience.

Here’s what you have to say to yourself : « My dream is that, maybe I’m not very lucky to succeed and maybe people will think I’m crazy, but I’m going to try to do something. I’m not going to do like the majority of people, I’m going to act, I’m going to do different and do interesting things ».

The truth is that the greatest craziness is to believe that by always doing the same thing, we will have different results. By always doing the same thing, we always have the same results. If you think you deserve better than that in your life, change your comfort, change your actions.

Seneca says something interesting in « Moral Letter to Lucilius ». He talks about people who commit suicide. He says it’s a paradox. It’s a paradox to give up life. What Seneca means is that it’s more constructive to try to change the actions that led to the results of being disgusted with life rather than leaving life.

It’s true that there are also elements that are outside our control or elements like psychology, depression, but whatever your despair, you can choose to change your actions to have another result. I will not lie to you, it will not be easy and it will not happen overnight. The main thing is that you have to try new things, experiment new things, get out of your comfort zone. It’s like this quote : « It’s when we walk that we risk failing ».

The majority of people are in a frozen environment. They’ve been doing the same things for years, they’ve been thinking the same way for years and their lifestyle is stagnating. Get out of this environment to experiment other things and meet people who think differently but share the same values as you. It’s these types of people that will motivate you to do things you never thought you’d do.

When you dream of something, it always seems impossible to you. Publish a book, start a company, change job because it’s frustrating, all that, you feel like it’s outside of your world. It’s true that it’s outside of your world but you have the possibility of making it a reality. Look, imagine that you are on the beach and you have to go to the mountain but you don’t know the way. The majority of people will stay on the beach because it’s more comfortable and safer.

It’s true that it’s safer to stay on the beach but over time, it becomes boring. The best plan is to go towards the mountain and on the way, you will find the first step. At this point, you can ask how to go to the second stage. At the second stage, you can ask how to go to the third stage, etc. In this way, gradually, you reach the mountain learning a lot of new things.

To start a company, it’s the same plan. You find an idea. Then you write a 2-3 pages project that explains how this idea can become a company. Then you look for how to finance this company. Then you create a product or service and you contact prospects, etc. It’s obvious that when you start these projects, you don’t really know the stages. Do this plan now with the knowledge you have, this will allow you to demystify the process and find the first stage.

We must stop dwelling. You have goals, you have frustrations, you want to do things to improve your lifestyle, run the plan. Go to the first stage and get information for the next stage. There is never a perfect time to start (that’s an excuse to procrastinate). You have to start imperfectly and do it anyway. It’s the only way to get the chance you deserve.

Fear Of Success (Part 1)

My Moment Of Clarity

In 2013 I realized that I was more afraid of success than being homeless. I went to another city for a job opportunity but it didn’t work. For several months, I spent my day with homeless people, illegals immigrants, good-for nothing people and drug addicts. All type of people that society puts aside and forgetting.

At first, I didn’t like this situation but over time I adapted and they accepted me. Now I think about it, I really learned to be a hustler with them. I mainly earned money with people from Africa (Nigeria, Ghana, Mali, Senegal, Congo, etc.) and people from Eastern Europe (Lithuania, Poland, Russia, etc). Often I was fighting on the street because people thought I was a nice little black boy. I train everyday at the gym. I ate 5 times a day. I had my laptop and I had 2 prepaid mobile phone.

But most of all, I felt free because I didn’t have a lot of bills to pay at the end of the month and I still had cash. There was not a days when my bank account was in the red and I promise you that it’s good.

Success in my team

In my team, there was a Congolese (I don’t say his name because he was a illegal immigrants). He had 4 children with 2 different women in another country and at the end of each month he asked me to have ideas to make more money. He was fed up with this situation, fed up with receiving welfare money that treated him like shit. He wanted to return to Congo and create a company. Now it’s cool, he has a good situation in Congo.

There was a Senegalese. He had a wife, a child and he worked at the airport. One day he lost his job at the airport and I don’t know all the details, but he lost everything. He couldn’t find work and his wife left him and kept the child. His wife didn’t want him to see his child, but she asked him for money. You see, a classic story.

This Senegalese told me that he needed more money because he was fed up with welfare that treated him as an illegal immigrant while he worked and paid his taxes like everyone else. He wanted more money to return to Senegal and start his own company. We worked well together and now he as a good situation in Senegal.

A few days after he left for Senegal, I watched a Gary Vaynerchuk’s video about building a legacy. Boom, I realized that I was more afraid of being rich that being poor because all my childhood I was in a middle classe environment or lower what had become my comfort zone. And my father often told me that I could never be rich.

Fear of success

With my blog, I see that on internet, there are people who could have more success but they blocked. They’re stuck because of their state of mind because technically they are competent.

There are bloggers who have a good traffic and an email list that grew from day to day but as soon as they have to offer a paid service/product, they block.

This blockage is the fear of success. The fear of success is a fear of change. Definitely leaving the comfort zone for something else. If you succeed you will make more money but it will also change your life outside and the perception of yourself.

To be afraid is not something bad because it allows us to be attentive to everything, to have all our senses at their maximum capacity. You need to be attentive to everything when you’re in a unknown area.

Fear of failure is embedded in fear of success

But when you’re afraid of success, you are not only afraid of success. There are other fears that add to the fear of success. With the fear of success, you are also afraid of failure.

Think seriously about that. When you feel that you will succeed, it also means that you may fail. The worst time to fail is when you think you can succeed because it’s more painful. It more painful that doing something that is lost in advance.

It’s really comfortable to stay in your comfort zone, complain and do nothing.

This is the end of the 1st part. In 2nd part, I would speak about the fear of rejection which is also in the fear of success.

Find The Gym For Your Goals (Part 1)

I read a Nerd Fitness article  and I learned good stuff.

The gym can become an important part in your life. For this reason is important to choose your gym well otherwise you will become bitter.

It’s not necessary to train in a gym to gain strength or to have a good physical condition. You can do a bodyweight workout program at home (bedroom, garage or basement).

But if you really want an athletic body, you need to have equipment like barbells or dumbbells. It’s possible that you don’t have place or resources to create your home gym (like me), so the best option is to have a gym membership.

Discover really what you want

Don’t do the mistake to have a gym membership in the closest gym to your home. Think about your goals.

Make a list of things you need in a gym and make the difference between « must have » and « would be nice to haves ».

Equipment

I wrote an article in 2 parts about this topic (click here link ). Imagine you have a workout program based on barbell, you need to check this :

  • Olympic barbell

  • Power rack (or at least a squat rack)

  • Dumbells up to 45-68kg (100-150lbs) or heavier if you want to do a dumbell training over barbell

  • Pullup bar/Dip station

  • Flat bench with racks for the bench press

Classes

Gyms offer free classes for their members like kickboxing, dance fitness, stationary bike or yoga. This is helpful for beginners, don’t hesitate to try one.

Amenities

Some gyms offer good anemities like child care, a zone only for women ( my sister came one time in my gym and she said that men stared at her too much) or dry cleaning.

An environment to be focus

For me the gym has an important part in my day. When I train at home, I know I’ll be bothered by my rommates. I find it easier to concentrate when I’m at the gym with my headphones. When I’m at the gym it’s « my time » to me, I’m in my bubble. Everything about home, school, work doesn’t exist. The only thing is important is my workout.

Coach

Gyms have coaches available to help you improve your technique or workout program. From time to time it’s pratical.

Rules

A « must have » rule can be you can bring your childen at gym. I don’t have children but it looks cool for people who have children. Some gyms don’t allow to do deadlift and have vibram  so check if rules match with what you want to do.

A gym membership can be a long-term commitment so look at these points :

  • If you do a workout program based on dumbbells like me, be sure that dumbbells up to 45-68kg (100-150lbs) or heavier

  • If you think you’ll do the Olympic lift, look for bumper plates and a gym that lets you drop the weight.

  • If you think you’ll try kickboxing or yoga later, check that the gym has this type of classes.

Budget

During my travels, I saw gym membership between $9.- and $365.- per month. In Europe, it’s on average EUR 50.- per month but it depends on the area where you live and the amenities offered.

It’s useless to take the most expensive price thinking that you’ll have everything you need in the gym (I already did this mistake). It’s for this reason I’m writing this article to help you to find the best gym at the best price according to your need.

Also think of the usual thing like the towel. Imagine you go to a gym that offer a towel’s service. You know it and you think it’s great, you don’t nee to bring your towel. One day, you go to train at the gym at lunch and the staff tell you that there is no more towels available. It’s annoying.

Apart from the equipement, there are services that are important to know if the gym offer them or not :

Events offer or trips with discounts. Imagine that the gym organizes a hiking trip and member pay only 20.-. I agree, it’s not an incredible discount but during the hiking trip you’ll able to meet people who work to improve their health like you.

A child care service during your workouts. It’s possible that you have to pay an extra of $20.- or $30.- per month. I don’t have children but it looks pratical.

Free classes including yoga that is great for relaxing muscles. I prefer Tai-Chi but there is no this class in gyms.

Location and hours

Having a gym that is close to your house and your school/workplace is an interesting place.

By exemple, if you gym is close of your school/workplace, it’s cool. But the problem is that if you school/workplace is at a distance of 1 hour from you home, you’ll never train on weekends.

There is something I forgot to tell you in gym’s rules. There are gyms that close at 23h (11pm) and I know some gyms don’t allow their members to start their workout after 22:15 (10:15pm). If you work late in the night or during the night, it’s better to look for a gym open 24/7.

It’s important to choose a gym according to your willpower :

  • Imagine you want to train before you go to school/workplace. You do it because you want to train immediately to avoid not training all day or because when you wake up, you’re groggy and train give you energy for the whole day ?

  • Imagine you want to train after your school/workplace. You do it because you don’t have time to train during the day ? Be carefull because if you’re the type of person who is very tired after school/workplacle, you’ll find excuses to cancel your training. I meet everyday people like this.

An ideal location is to find a gym located between your home and your school/workplace. If you can do this, you’ll save time and money. I can’t do that but it’s really effective.

Note : It’s better to pay a little bit more for a gym that you use several times a week than pay less for a gym that you use from time to time. Don’t be fancy.

Know What We Want In Life

I watched an Olivier Roland’s video  and there is good stuff.

A lot of young and less young (30-50 years old) still don’t know what they want in life. It’s not something essential to succeed in life and be happy. But read this Seneca’s quote: « If one does not know to which port one is sailing, no wind is favorable ». Life can be more interesting when we know what we want to accomplish. When you take your car, before to go in your car, you know your destination. Do you already used your car without knowing the destination ?

I think it’s important that people know what they want accompish in life, what they want leave as inheritance or legacy. To do this, we need to find our passion, a passion that drive you to be better than yesterday.

I know people used different exercices to find their passion but they found nothing, it’s a failure and they’re frustrated. In my opinion, these people have just an exploration problem.

Exlpore several activities is a great way to find a passion. It’s simple, how do you know you like an activity, if you have never tried this. May be you are an archery olympic champion but how do you know if you have never tried archery ?

I encourage you to do new activites, meet people, discuss with them and pratices to decrease the number of activites you don’t know. The truth is that your passion will not come to seek you.

Exlpore new activies, it’s good but don’t become addicted to exporation’s phase.

In a passion, there is 3 steps :

  • Exploration phase

    It’a like when we fall in love, everything is awesome, everything is beautiful.

  • Dry period phase

    For most people, it’s in this phase that they abandon. The enthusiasm of the beginning diminishes enormously. We spend a lot of energy for little result compared to a person who has done the same thing for 3-5 years.

    And it’s also in this phase where we must be careful to not be addicted to the exploration phase. For people who don’t like the dry period phase, they will find several excuses to change activity instead of holding on until to have good results.

  • Consecration phase

    It’s at this moment that we harvest the seeds that we sowed and generally success always exceeds us.

Project

project

Once we found a passion, have a project around this passion allow us to become a better version or ourselves. This project will allow us to get out of our comfort zone, to give the better or ourselves because we really want to succeed. The ideal is to combine a passion, skill and economic potential if you want to become an entrepreneur.

To test your project, I advise you to use « Lean startup » by experimenting in the field using little time, energy and money.

Become Antifragile

I read a Nerd Fitness article  and there is good stuff.

There is a interesting book « Antifragile : Things that Gain From Disorder » of Naseem Taleb.

The concept is to rebuilt our body and our environment to become antifragile, getting stronger and more resilient as more chaos is introduced.

Do you want be strong like your movie’s hero or your comic’s hero ? Read the next !

In all domains in life, there is 3 types :

  • Fragile

    This object must be handled with care. This object could break if there is a variation in handling. This object must be out of danger to survive.

  • Solid

    This object doesn’t need to be handled with care. This object can be throw or hit, it will not change. It’s well built and resistant. If it breaks, it will be rebuilt exactly in the same way.

  • Antifragile

    This object doesn’t handled it wiht care ! This object can be throw, broke, throw in chaos, it becomes stronger. It’s like Hydra’s myth, you cut a head and two heads apprears. In fact, an antifragile object become weak when it handled with care.

Did you believed like me that human being was a « fragile » type ?

Nature like chaos and use it to make corrections and make change to survive like an ecosystem. Disasters, climat changes and others elements erase « fragile » members of a species. Stronger and antifragile members of a species survive.

The good new is we can become antifragile. Look :

  • When you take something heavy, your joints, muscle and bone rebuild themselves to become stronger in cas where there would be more chaos. This is the basis, if we don’t do physical activity, our muscles and bones can atrophy and weaken.

  • When we have a disease in our body at a certain dose, our body built a resistance et become stronger against it.

  • When we’re children, we learn than pans on the stove are hot, animals bite and life is difficult. We learn all these little pieces of chaos to prepare us to survive when we become adult.

Because we’re antifragile creature, we need chaos and failure in our life or we will die.

Do you remember how are humain being is the move « Wall-E » ? Humain beings are without muscles and are unable to take care of themselves. Don’t get out of you comfort zone and you become like them (and like my father) !

If we want be ready to survive in the unknown, we need to constently get out of our comfort zone, challenges and chaos in our body.

In summary, it’s :

  • Enough chaos to force our body to rebuilt itself to become stronger.

  • Chaos in a specific amount of intensity

  • Enough time to our body to recover after chaos (training)

If you walk the same distance with the same speed every day, your heart will adapt to use less energy to do this until there is too much chaos like a very stress day at school/work.

When you feel this distance is easy, walk faster or another challenge. Transform your heart to become stronger and more resilient to manage some chaos more powerful.

There is another way to put chaos in your body, training :

  • if you do a deadlift at 90kg (200lbs) a time, your body is forcing to adapt in different way to lift 68kg (160lbs) several times (reps).

    By forcing your body to adapt to lift heavy weight, your bones, your nervous system, joints and muscles need to adapt to become more antifragile to lift weight heavier. Talibe say we must force our body to adapt to the maximum level of chaos (heavy weight training) to go beyond our limit differently than medium weight or sets with a lot of reps.

The construction of an antifragile body can be totally destroyed by an « fragile » nutrition like fast foods (Nutrisystem, microwave meals, etc ).

To have an antifragile diet, we need to learn to cook ourselves and don’t be afraid to try new ingredients. Cook isn’t a thing we have to afraid or to be ashamed, it’s something good and important to have a good health. Embrace it. There is a lot of healty meals on internet, it ‘s cool.

Chaos in your diet ? Eat more meals training days and skip a meal non-training days. Don’t become a maniac to count calories or to have the perfect number of hours between meals. As long as you eat 4-6 meals per day, it’s ok.

You want to the next level : grow your food. If you can grow vegetables and raise animals, it’s great my friends. Some resources here  and there .

Here are the basics to build an antifragile body prepared to any amount of chaos and a nutritional strategy to have the energy needed to cross each chaos.

At Our Limits We Have Growth

I read a Nerd Fitness article  and there is good stuff.

We all searching inspirations and sometimes we found them with videos or in biographies.

Our limits

The world’s chess champion Josh Waitzkin says in his book « The Art of Learning »  :

« Growth comes at the point of resistance. We learn by pushing ourselves and finding what really lies at the outer reaches of our abilities ».

Training shouln’t be boring

The moste of people do training by constraint, somthing boring :

  • Run on treadmill ou sit down at a weight machine

  • Suffering by doing exercices during 20-60 minutes

  • Repeat it again

Everybody had this experience. Day after day, do same exercices, because we believe that with this way we will have results.

Training shouldn’t be a constraint. We shouln’t see it like a constraint but rather like a way to challenge our limits.

Each training should be exciting

You must exploit this excitation in you training to reach results you want.

Step forward

step forward

Step forward to get out of your comfort zone, get out of securitiy zone, out of your known limits of your life for an unknown adventure maybe dangerous. In all movies you watch, the hero get out of his comfort zone to become better and that’s what makes the movie exciting. You can have the same scenario in your life.

Where are the gate keepers of your life ?

  • Is it the weights that you have never lifted for a deadlift ?

  • Is it the mountain hike you would like to do but you have never tried ?

  • Is it travel outside of your country or continent and test your preconceived notions about other cultures ?

  • Is it to learn a new instrument or make new friends or attending an event ?

Security and the « know » transform us in zombies !

Take the control of your life and avoid the « good enough » syndrome. To do the bare minimum has never evolved anything.

It’s true, stay in your comfort zone means be safe but your growth depend on what you do outside of the line.

Celebrate each victories and appreciates the feeling of joy that you have each time that you have succeeded in a challenge.

It’s not to cross the finish line. We haven’t yet found the finish line then profit of the life’s journey and love the life’s game.

Growth happens at our limits, wherever they may lie. It’s how much we can become comfortable with being uncomfortable that will determine just how much we can grow.

To paraphrases Professor Barnhardt in the movie « The Day The Earth Stood Still » : At the precipice we change !
